You knew the Redbirds weren’t going to offer up anything to DeLuzio, but I’m a little surprised they bailed on the guy that they touted for so long. I guess that’s what happens when a guy gets touched up for a season ending HR in the post-season and then can’t answer the bell due to worn bushings in his arm.
Sore arm pitchers are a losing proposition. Ask the Cubs who traded Brock for an 18 game winner with a sore arm.
GC, I would not trade O’Neill for Jansen straight up. It’s a fair enough offer but it’s just shuffling deck chairs IMO.
I don’t think I would either but there is going to be a price to pay for a catcher. Going to have to pay a lot or give up players.
Belinger might be worth taking a chance on a return to 2019 form. We are hoping for that from O’Neill and Carlson. Mo wants to pick up a LH outfield bat anyway.
Let’s assume the Cardinals have (roughly) $20 million to spend this offseason. They want a catcher, a left-handed bat and are looking for pitchers if a deal comes along.
Here are some possible scenarios:

Option A:
– Trade Carlson + Burleson to Pittsburgh for Bryan Reynolds (solves CF/LH bat issue)
– Sign Christian Vasquez (MLBTR projection: 3 years/$27 million) (solves the cather issue)
– Sign Quintana (MLBTR projection: 2 years/$24 million) (nice-to-have)-
Option B:
– Trade Tyler O’Neil to Toronto for Danny Jansen (solves the cather issue)
– Sign Andrew Benitendi for LF (MLBTR projection: 4 years/$54 million) (solves the LH bat issue)-
Option C:
– Trade Burleson + Woodford + lower level prospect for Jansen (solves the catcher issue) (iffy on whether Toronto would accept a package like this)
– Sign Michael Brantley (injured, but solves LH Bat issue) (MLBTR projection: 1 year/$15 million)-
Option D:
– Trade Tyler O’Neil to Toronto for Danny Jansen (solves catcher issue)
– Sign Brandon Nimmo for CF (Solves CF/LH bat issue) (MLBTR projection: 5 years/$110 million)Which option would you choose?

The only option that includes pitching.GC, do you think Reynolds for Carlson & Burleson is close to equal value?
I’d have to say I’d choose option A only because I’ve seen enough of Reynolds to know that I’d like to see him in a Cardinal uniform, but I don’t think my boss will allow me to pay all that money to 3 LH SP’ers if one of them is going to be relegated to the BP.
I would definitely not pick signing Benintendi. We have enough noodle bats. He’s actually a poor man’s Carlson, if that’s possible.
I like Reynolds, but I’d be reluctant to pair Hudson up with Carlson. I’d offer up Woodford before I’d give up on Hudson at this juncture.
Nice post LA. I would choose option A. Brian Reynolds would be perfect for the Cardinals.
I highly doubt that Carlson is a better hitter than Benintendi. Carlson is Piscotty 2.0.
The Cardinals should be all over Cody Bellinger. He would be my plan B if we can’t get Reynolds.
Bellinger’s one of those guys who’s hard to figure out. Then you see ROY, NL MVP, and he’s 27 years of age. You immediately say to yourself, I’ve got to have him.
I doubt Carlson would be who Mo trades because we are not deep in strong defensive CFers and have more in the way of corner/DH types. I rather doubt that is who Pittsburgh would want anyway. He really is only good vs LHP and has shown no inclination to approach Reynolds’ 126 OPS+. I doubt they would be real interested in Hudson since he has not shown he can be effective post TJ. The trade would basically be a Hail Mary on their part.
If it was a deal involving Carlson, then possibly Liberatore might work, but I still think they could get a better offer given Reynolds relatively cheap salary and still two more arb years. They probably will not have to settle for players that have and are experiencing performance issues and hoping to turn it around.
