O’Neill, Edman, Carlson, Gorman, Yepez, Noot, Burleson, Walker, Gomez, and Winn. Can anyone remember when we had so many good young position players?

Not to mention the guy who won a gold glove and finished third in ROY voting this year.

Thanks for the omission notice, gscottar. Absolutely.

Apparently Stratton will not be non-tendered.

Then I do not understand why Stratton was a healthy omission from the postseason roster.

That’s $2.8M not available for something else. I wish they would have put it towards signing Quintana. We’re going to go into next year with a lot of injury history in our rotation, and a reliably healthy guy would help even if its only 5 innings every 5 days.

I think it probably just tells you what the Cards are aiming for. Strikeouts are the thing they publicly admitted they want, and Quintana doesn’t provide that… so the handwriting is probably on the wall there.

If you only go by his work in the second half of the ’22 season, there’s no question that the Cardinals should make an attempt to keep Quintana. The reality is that he’s going to want a substantial amount of money for what amounted to a shade under 63 IP in the regular season plus 5.1 scoreless IP in game #1 of the post-season. I really have no idea what the right call on him would be, but I’m entirely certain it would be a risky one. I hope he gets the kind of money he’s looking for, but my gut feeling tells me I hope he gets the money from another team.

Montgomery had the highest K% of our rotation, followed by Quintana, for the 2022 season.

If you go by pitchers who threw 120+ innings, Q was 75th of 104 in K rate. I’m very sure the Cards will hope to improve on that for their rotation, maybe circling back to Q later on. For $15M a year, I’d like better.

Obviously there are times in a game when a K is about the only hope of staving off disaster, but I think those times normally take place in the last 3 innings of a ballgame. I’m not too overly concerned with a SP’ers ability to punch out a hitter at will. I’d rather he have the ability to simply record outs in a manner that kept the pitch count at a pace that allows him to work past 5 innings. Let the late inning guys who are only expected to work 15 to 30 pitches focus on the ability to challenge hitters and record outs without contact.

The FO just spent 17.5mil on Wainwright, who had a lesser K% than Q, so maybe its a nice K narrative, when it fits. Not resigning Q does fit your offseason goals, just not the K% narrative you are selling.

Waino is a franchise icon and someone they have no reason not to sign, if he plays. For what it’s worth, I went on record saying I thought the team may be better if he’d retired. Regardless, just like Yadi…if he wanted in, he was going to be in no matter what.

Quintana is a different story, don’t you think? Mo publicly spoke of wanting swing and miss stuff. Q provides that at about a 28th percentile rate. Does that meet the goal?

I never thought I would start a thread that ended up having at least 28 pages.

I guess I am getting better.

Too bad Pugs hasn’t chimed in on this thread. That would pretty much make it complete..:)

The main question is whether we should sign another starter, if we don’t know yet whether a new starter will be needed or not. All 5 slots are filled right now, with 5 decent backups. A trade could always be made during the season if necessary.

25, I agree k% is very important but the narrative is there for the FO when it conveniently fits, when it doesn’t, it gets swept under the rug. There is a big gap in what they say and actually do.

Every season they roll out Hudson like he has a scholarship. He can barely K more than he walks, and then their K narrative disappears.

We didn’t start Wainwright, Flaherty or Hudson in WC game 1. Q didn’t disappoint, and he was second on our rotation in K%, for all of 2022. He made US better last season and could again in 2023, that’s my concern. Not some apply when it fits narrative.

You can pretty much take it to the bank that another starter will be needed. Mikolas, Waino, and Montgomery can probably be counted on to eat innings although Waino did not finish strong. Matz and Flaherty most certainly can’t be counted on.

Hudson: I think there is a chance he could rebound to pre-TJ form but we really don’t know.
Pallante: They don’t seem to know if he will be a starter or reliever.
Thompson: They don’t seem to know if he will be a starter or reliever.
Woodford: They don’t seem to know what his role is.
Liberatore: He really didn’t prove much in 2022. I still like the kid but he has to prove he belongs.

For the last two winters we listed the names, said we had enough pitching, then realized after the season started that we don’t. We stumble through the first four months of the season then Mo tries to find reinforcements at the deadline.

Quintana halved his career HR/FB last year (5.3% from 10.3%). It was 8% lower than his best season since 2017. The xFIP of 3.72 tells me generally what I need to know about his success in 2022…there is some considerable doubt that he will repeat it.

In fact, my prediction is that Liberatore outperforms Quintana next year for about 5% of the cost. I have come around a little on jj’s suggestion of Bassitt, if the Cards can stomach the payroll increase.

In my view Liberatore’s got a long way to go before I’d venture a guess that he’d ever outperform Quintana, but at the same time, I can take or leave whether or not the Cardinals decide to try and keep the veteran LHP. I don’t have to look at any fancy numbers concerning Quintana. I saw plenty of him when he was a Cub. He’s been around awhile and I know the kind of pitcher he is via the simple eye test. From where I sit, he was working the second half of the ’22 season knowing that his performance was going to have a tremendous impact on his net income for ’23 and beyond. He did an outstanding job of promoting his career, but I’m not going to stack a bunch of currency on a pallet based on a shade under 63 IP’ed worth of work. At any rate, if and when he cashes in on those 62.2 regular season innings and his 5.1 innings of scoreless work in the ’22 post-season, I’ll be happy for him.

GS, recently, stumbling through the first half has become so common that it looks like it’s planned.

Last season we were plus 6 after 102 games (trade deadine) and plus 18 in the 60 games after.

I hate to say it but it’s beginning to look like the FO is protecting their draft position by loading the roster with poor quality relievers who will cost us 8 to 10 wins after 100 games.

Then they get serious at the deadline. That’s a risky game plan, but I could see where picking 8 to 10 picks earlier every round yields a better group.

How many seasons in a row have we had just 3 relievers the managers have trusted? 3 of 8?

I have seen speculation in couple places that a trade of Nootbaar or Carlson for Kirk or Jansen, Toronto catchers, might be brewing. Toronto’s trade away of an outfielder to Seattle for pitching added fuel to that talk.

jjcfstl…I understand what you’re driving at, but an average or deliberate pace through the first 100 games isn’t at all uncommon. I’m a guy who enjoys checking the standings from opening day on, but someone once told me there’s really no use in even glancing at them until after Labor Day. That’s when the good horses catch stride around the final turn.

JJ, we get away with that because of being in a weak division. If we were in the NL East or NL West we would be 15 games behind before Mo tries to get pitching reinforcements.

The Cards made a few minor league moves today, most notably bringing back Oscar Mercado.
