GS, a club reclaims more salary flexibility from walking away from 12mil instead of 2mil, I agree.
But, to continue our discussion on Hudsons trade value, walking away from Wongs trade value was much more of a talent in return loss, than non-tendering Hudsons trade value.
A bunch of minor league FAs just took off. A lot of roster filler/depth pitchers from AA/AAA including McFarland and Johan Quezada and some Indy ball pick ups. So we will probably see Mo pick up a few of those types this winter to fill in around the edges. Possibly a pick up or two with big league camp invite included. Maybe Mo will let Girsch handle all that so he can focus on landing the big one.
Having not read the rest of the thread this has probably already been gone over.
I think what the cardinals do at catcher this year will be very telling what they think of Ivan Herrera. If they go for a long term answer then that says it all.
Personally I believe the best option would be to bring in Vasquez on a reasonable maybe 3 year deal and keep the trade powder dry for an ace level starting pitcher or another bat.

That is true but I think there is one big difference in the Wong-Hudson comparison. Wong was let go right after the pandemic season of 2020 when the Cardinals were dealing with revenue losses. Had that been a “normal” offseason I think they pick up the Wong option.
The Cardinals are coming off tons of revenue in 2022 due to Pujolspalooza and Hudson’s salary will be much lower than Wong’s. I guess I am a bit more bullish on Hudson than most. It isn’t uncommon for pitchers to struggle the year after TJ surgery. 2021 was the surgery year, 2020 was the covid year, and in 2019 he gave us 174 quality innings and finished 5th in the Rookie of the Year voting. I think Dakota could bounce back to 2019 form on a very cheap salary.

The FO doesn’t reclaim huge $ non-tendering Hudson or receive huge value in trading him.
I expect them to tender him, so what is the impact of him staying? There are already 4 SP’rs drawing a minimum of 10mil per (Adam, Mik, Matz and Monty). They will start.
Flaherty makes SP5, Hudson SP6. Pallante and Liberatore are added depth.
At this point we are not a better rotation, in fact we are worse with the loss of Q.
Salvaging the rotation each deadline is risky, but hey, it keeps our draft pick higher 😞

No need to do that. I just listed the ones who may be considered for time on the big club this coming season. Some posters feel we need more pitching. I feel we are pretty well set. Especially if we are able to sign Quintana. Forums are for people with varied opinions. Nothing at all personal.
If we re-sign Quintana we would have four potential LH starters
1. Monty
2. Q
3. Matz
4. Liberatore
and four potential RH starters
1. Waino
2. Mikolas
3. Flaherty

That’s the list we need to add to, not the everybody and his brother list, if the goal is to improve for 2023.
I just looked up Jordan Walker and he looks pretty good. He’s a big kid, eh? They have him listed at 6-5, 220 lbs. I say throw him in there.
Won’t they have Walker play in ST games? If he does good, why not have him on the team on opening day?

Is pretty good.The IF looks real good. Obviously, the OF is the question. Right now, after looking him up, I’m more enthusiastic about Walker than I am about either O’Neill or Carlson. And I don’t even want to think about what they’re going to try to do for a C. Probably Knizner.
When healthy, I think an OF of O’Neill, Carlson & Walker is a good one. I would add Michael Conforto from the left side as the fourth outfielder. Danny Jansen & Knizner would be more than adequate at the catching position.
