Lastly, the Cardinals have shown that they’re willing to find pitching at the trade deadline if necessary. The existing starters in MO’s thinking are probably good enough to win the Central.
The only possible addition in my thinking is Quintana. If they can afford him on top of Waino and have enough left over for a catcher and the LHH outfielder (Dickerson type).

If the Cards intend to raise payroll, I’d imagine that pitching will have to be where they make their splash. Other than Contreras, there aren’t any big money catchers or backup outfielders on the market.
Probably through a trade for a catcher, 25. And there are several older LHH outfielders who wouldn’t be that expensive.

I would say Flaherty, Mikolas, and O’Neill will be on the 2023 roster. DeJong and Reyes will not be. Mikolas might get extended beyond that and O’Neill is controlled thru 2024. I don’t see any of the others here.
Speaking of Reyes, I don’t recall hearing a single thing about him in months. Has there been an update or something I’ve missed?
Not really. It has been radio silence mostly. There was an article in the P-D a few days ago that had a brief paragraph about him.
Alex Reyes may not be back with Cardinals
Alex Reyes, a “can’t miss” prospect when he came up and dazzled in 2016 before encountering a raft of injuries, may find himself off the 40-man roster later this fall. Reyes, a 2021 National League All-Star, missed the entire 2022 season after labrum surgery.
To whether he will pitch next season or be with the Cardinals, Mozeliak said, “I don’t think those questions have been answered yet.
“It comes down to what other additions we might try to think through on our 40-man. We’re not forced to answer that today, but clearly, it’s been frustrating for him.
“He’s still rehabbing,” Mozeliak said. “But we have to get past rehabs. We have to understand what production might or might not look like next year.”
Reyes, 28, will be eligible for arbitration again and is one year away from free agency. He made $2.85 million in 2022 and the Cardinals, though payroll will be increasing, are not apt to want to pay him anything close to that next year.
Mikolas is signed for 2023. Will be here for sure. At 36 years old in 2024, he will become a free agent and I doubt they’ll bring him back.
Flaherty is in his last year of arbitration. He won’t be that expensive and has a high ceiling. Will be here for sure in 2023. Doubt he will be here beyond that.
O’Neill is in only his second year of arbitration. He also
has a high ceiling. He will be here in 2023 and maybe in 2024.Reyes is in his last year of arbitration. Another potential high ceiling player that won’t be expensive at all. He’ll be here in 2023 and perhaps beyond that if he performs well.
DeJong won’t be here in 2023. He’s been here beyond his welcome.

Hicksjjcfstl…It’s good to know that Mikolas and Montgomery will both be doing their best next season to demonstrate that they deserve to hit the jackpot if they decide to file and offer themselves on the market. I don’t think Flaherty wants to be in St. Louis and I wasn’t even aware that Hicks was eligible in ’24. At any rate, pallets loaded with cash is a pretty good motivator.

Not surprised Arenado is staying. Unless he had a verbal deal that the Dodgers, or possibly the Giants, would be seeking him I doubt he would have found a better deal anywhere. The Cardinals will compete, and he has a nice contract. He is in a good place.
Since the rumors were that he wanted to be sure the brass was committed to building a stronger team, I’m glad to see that he’s staying. Hopefully it’s a sign that the payroll bump we hoped for is coming.
How have those super starters on other playoff teams done this season? And have they done any better than Quintana and Mikolas did?

Just to stay even with last year, they have to spend $14M, so my guess is that they are planning to go after Contreras, or Vazquez/Murphy + a $6-8M reliever.
