8 of the 11 arbitration eligible players are pitchers. Two are locks to be tendered, Monty and Helsley.

The remaining 6 are estimated to earn 17mil.
Flaherty, Hudson, Hicks, Cabrera, Stratton and Reyes.

Stratton, Reyes, Hicks and Flaherty are entering their final season of club control. Hudson 2 seasons and Cabrera 3 of club control.

At this time these players are owed $0.00. So how many roster spots you want?

Is rinse and repeat good enough for 2023 or should the FO trim a few arb players?

Flaherty’s arb salary is estimated around $5M. It seems most likely he will not answer the bell much of the time next year, if he even makes it out of ST. But it is possible he manages his bum shoulder somehow, it does not impede him all year, and he turns in something close to his 2019 Cy Young conversation performance. In my mind’s eye I see Clint Eastwood asking Mo “Do you feel lucky?”.

Hicks and Reyes are huge injury risks as well, but cheaper, so less to lose, except perhaps more usefulness from the roster slots.

Cabrera is age 26 now. Been up in 4 seasons now and still can’t stick. 2022 K/9 down to 6.4, K/BB 1.6 (Ouch). Mo’s algo will say off him now.

Stratton’s WHIP 1.500. A hit an inning and 4.8 BB/9. We surely have a min wage in house guy who can do that.

Hudson turned 28 and seems posed to morph into a reliever. Whether he will be worth the estimated $2.7M is a question. Mo doesn’t like to spend anything on middle relief. But is that Hudson’s new ceiling?

So, with Matz already earning about $10M through ’25, do the Cardinals really need to sign Quintana when they can probably pay another lefty in Montgomery $10M and have him pitch for them at least through next season?

Mo would be crazy not to take a run at Quintana. He is a proven innings eater who stays healthy. We always think we have enough starters and we end up having to hire more starters mid season. Guys who tend to be on the IL will be on the IL again, its what they do.

Plus we have performance issues, most notably Liberatore. Last winter and spring many had him written into the rotation in ink. Chiseled in stone even. Hudson. Nobody know what Matz will look like when he takes a regular turn.

Wainwright was hot and cold, and cold way too often. We can believe he had major mechanics issues that all the coaches and staff with all the videos and computers couldn’t detect. We can also note that he is 41, that’s 99 in pitcher years.

Bling…Well, I’d say you’re right about Matz. I just thought it was odd to have three lefty SP’s. I can’t remember a Cardinal team that had more than two. Matz is being paid for two more years, so I’m reasonably certain he’ll get a chance to occupy the 5 man. If they sign Quintana, there’s a genuine possibilty of contemplating 3 LHP’s in the rotation. That’s highly unusual.

82 days until pitchers and catchers report. Or thereabouts.

FYI…..the Indianapolis Colts have reached out to Andrew Luck. Imagine that..:)

If they move multiple arms in trades and non-tender one or two, Quintana seems logical. The arms we have now could change dramatically. I could see three guys leave and them react with depth to simply move current guys to the front of the line.
Consider that they may still see Hicks as a top of the rotation arm if he improves his command. They could still see Verhagen as viable. They could plan to throw Reyes into that mix. Clearly none of the above can be counted upon; hence the need for depth.

Nigel T…I agree. If they attempt and succeed at signing Quintana, the only way I can see to balance the 5 man would be via trade. I can’t imagine a rotation that consists of 3 LHP’s.

Marmol is sitting in his office talking to himself right about now…

Willie McGee is probably trying to cheer him up.

I would say Stratton and Reyes could be on the chopping block.

If we aren’t going after an ace then I would definitely be interested in Quintana. We need to have a solid rotation in April instead of waiting until August.

If we have to keep Matz then I would move him to the bullpen. I know he would be an expensive bullpen piece but that is what they get for signing him in the first place.

While I’d be ok with moving Matz to the pen, I’m also someone who doesn’t think that Matz was as bad as some are making him out to be this year. Given a return to health, I think it’s possible that 2023 could be his best year.

I’m also firmly in the no Quintana camp. We got his career best finish, so know when you’re ahead and quit then. We have a pretty low ceiling and floor to this rotation right now, which is concerning.

    Well certainly changes

and it seems Ivan and Knizner are no longer the future…unless maybe we aim for Sal Perez

    One big trade
    one good FA
a couple extensions seemed to be the norm before

maybe with explicit increase we are looking at going from one good FA to two good ones or one BIG FA

Matz will be in the starting rotation. That is the plan. You can bank on that.

And speaking of bank, I keep saying this but it falls on deaf ears. The Redbirds are banking on Jack Flaherty finally rounding into form and being that ace they have been hoping for the last 2-3 years.

Yep, Matz will take a turn every 5th day at the beginning of the ’23 season unless he hits the wall at Daytona while covering 1B on a GB hit to the right side during ST…

We spent years waiting for Reyes to turn into our top gun, now we’re going down the same road with Flaherty. It’s going to take more than a flash three years ago to warm my cockles.

Part of the business plan is to churn the roster each year. They will try to trade a few and if u successful, we could see some get released.
The pitching isn’t at all set. They simply have a surplus right now.

    “Pitching is set jj”

That’s your version of shock radio, right?

Take an extreme position to promote discussion?

I’m all for the pitching discussions because pitching is the weak link of this roster. I just don’t think those type replies are necessary. This forum is very saavy and understands there will be roster churn.
