    Eddie is the best.

quote from John Mozeliak published on Wed. by a local StL. media outlet concerning Paul DeJong. “I would say that as of right now, there’s a strong probability that he is back with us.”

He would say that whatever his intention is.

Bling…So would anyone else that routinely talks out of both sides of their mouth.

DeJong is on contract with the Cardinals(last year) for next year. He is a good SS defender and if the Cardinals got rid of him then they would have to get another reserve infielder who can play SS behind Eddie. That is why he likely returns.

Donovan can play SS in a pinch.

I think Donovan is a true utility guy. He needs to be in the lineup somewhere everyday and bat first or second.

The only reason DeJong may come back is because of his contract.

Oli agrees with you GS, about Donovan. Oli uses Donovan is the DH to spotlight his D flexibility.

When a lineup regular needs a day off from the field, but you don’t want to lose his bat from the lineup, flip him with DH Donovan. This works at 6 different positions.

A nightmare lineup for opposing pitchers –

    Winn CF
    Donovan 2B
    Goldschmidt 1B
    Arenado 3B
    Walker RF
    Gorman LF
    Murphy C
    Yepez/Burleson DH
    Edman SS

Yes it would be but would the OF defense be a nightmare for our pitchers?

    gscottar –
CF – Winn – Gold Glove potential. Fast and great arm.
RF – Walker – Probably above average. Good speed and arm.
LF – Gorman – might surprise you and be at lease league average

Seems high risk to have three outfielders who as recently as three months ago had never played out there. And two still haven’t.

Phased in over 2023 and 2024.

I think the opening day lineup will be pretty familiar, but it will probably be a lot different by the end.

    Nootbaar RF
    Gorman/Donovan 2B
    Goldy 1B
    NA 3B
O’Neill or a new guy LF
    Carlson CF
    Yepez DH
    New Guy C
    Edman SS

Rotation will be something like this, subject to injuries:
Mikolas, Montgomery, Matz, Wainwright, plus Quintana if we sign him or Flaherty or new guy.

I’ve got the new guy catcher down low in the order because I think they will find an upgrade over Knizner, but not make a move that will block Herrera. I’ve got a possible new guy LF 5th because, if they bring someone in, it will be an experienced middle of the order bat.

They won’t pay for an experienced middle of the order bat with O’Neill, Gorman, Yepez, and Walker in the queue. Maybe a Dickerson type guy.

crany the only one of those who hits from the left is Gorman and he stunk at the plate this year. He or Burleson may develop into the role, I agree, but the question is what to do meanwhile.

I am ambivalent about Marmol. He stays (the most likely) or he goes, it doesn’t matter much to me. But what I think is that we need a lot less “managing” on a daily basis.

There is quite simply too much effort expended in trying to control every aspect of the game, every swing of the bat, every pitch. Lefty coming up, change the pitcher, no matter how well he has been doing. Right-handed pitcher, let’s run out all of our lefties. Generalities have become written in stone. These bingo draw lineups changing every day, perhaps make sense in somebody’s mind but mystify others. The immutable law of the “pitch count.” The magic 100. The whole concept of “closer” could stand some rethinking. Resting position players? I wonder what Cal Ripkin would say to that. If players need rest, play fewer games (heresy!) and build more days off into the schedule (heavens!). Of course things need to be adjusted occasionally and there are many good reasons for that, but much of it, I fear, is just plain guessing. Next thing you know, we’ll be playing baseball in November!

BB – The LH competition will probably be between Gorman and Burleson. Unless they bring in another LH bat from outside.

DeJong needs to call Carpenter and find out exactly what he did to fix himself at the plate and go do it.

If he’s going to be taking up a roster spot then may as well try it. Carpenter did it on his own after being released by the Cards…

ZTR…I’m not sure that would do any good. Carpenter’s 1 for 11 with 9 K’s for the Yankees in the ’22 post-season. He can’t even put the baseball into play.

This begs the question, why didn’t he do it before being released?

This begs the question, why didn’t he do it before being released?

As Carp himself said, he needed “new eyes on me” and consultation with people outside the organization to get it fixed. He worked with Votto, Holliday and a couple of hitting instructors who he thought could help him rebuild his swing.

I see similarities between Carpenter and DeJong. Both went over the edge and couldn’t come back, albeit more abruptly with Carp. I imagine it having to do with the wonks’ attempts to optimize the biomechanics that overloaded and shorted out the player’s mental aspect. I remember an interview with DeJong when he discussed his mechanics. The guy was spewing gibberish.

As Tim McCarver would say, “This is the big leagues!” You don’t build a major league OF defense on hope and a prayer.

I guess I missed this yesterday. What in Winn’s history suggests that he has gold glove potential in CF?
