As Tim McCarver would say, “This is the big leagues!” You don’t build a major league OF defense on hope and a prayer.
Why stop now? They’ve been doing it for years, e.g. Matt Carpenter, Matt Adams, Yairo Munoz, Jose Martinez, Wong, Edman, Yepez, etc. I even think Gyorko got a taste in the OF.
Winn has speed and a strong arm and those are two of several attributes needed to be an elite CF’er.
You probably have to hit a little more to stick in CF as against SS. We will see how that goes for Winn in AAA. .258 BA, 100 wRC+ in AA is not spectacular, but time is on his side.
Ahhh, so I guess anyone with an adequate arm should give up the idea of being a gold glove center fielder.
No, Forsch, but a great arm sure helps when you go all the way to the wall in left center or right center to retrieve a ball that’s hit into the gap. Especially when you’re the first one to get there as a rule because the power hitting corner outfielders aren’t quite as speedy and mobile.
That’s good. At least Edman has the potential for a gold glove in the OF. He has experience out there already and could provide some mentoring to the other young guys when they get out out there.

Every article listed notes that shortstop is more important than center field.

I played both CF and SS and I don’t know which is more valuable, but I always thought SS was harder physically and CF harder mentally, with men on base I mean.
Bling…Pretty sure that SS is considered the more crucial of the two only because of the large discrepency in number of chances.
The defensive spectrum is baseballs version of etched in stone.
Catcher is on the far right. Working back left, next is SS, then 2B, then CF.
The up the middle positions we all acknowledge are the hardest, and where we want our team to be the strongest.
Seems like some posters think Winn will be a better defensive SS than Edman. Not so sure about that.
It’s not a given that Winn will be a better SS than Edman. Heck, it’s not even a given that he’s a major leaguer. But he’s got tools that could make him a better SS. He’s faster than Edman, with a better arm and all reports indicate that he’s steady with the glove. That only makes him a potential Gold Glove SS, while Edman has shown his mettle over half a year at the big league level.
Perhaps long term the play is Edman SS, Gorman 2B and Donovan filling in at both plus 3B, 1B and DH until Winn is ready. Perhaps in two years Gorman moves to 1B if Goldy moves on, and Winn and Edman are up the middle with Donovan filling in. It can be difficult to project. I’d certainly not be looking to move Winn or Gorman to the OF yet though.
Edman is one of the best defensive infielders right now in MLB. Winn has not proven to be close to that at the minor-league level.
Probably the only question about Winn is whether he will hit MLB pitching enough to be an everyday starter. The glove seems certain enough even with the great difference in the speed of the game from AA to MLB. But he will have to hit to stay in a MLB lineup. We will get a better idea about that next season when he faces AAA pitching. If he falls off much from the .258 BA and 100 wRC+ from this year in AA, then he couldn’t be considered ready for MLB. He is young enough that he could spend more time at AAA if needed.

I’m a tall southpaw, so I pitched and played 1B. If you ever watched me play, you know 1B is an extremely difficult position.
What is a realistic ETA for Winn as a SS?
I realize he may debut sooner as a reliever, but what type of overlap is there with Edmans 3 control yrs and Winn?
Winn should be ready toward the end of the 2023 season, if all goes well. Maybe a September call up.
