stlcard25…The article I read indicated that Edman would qualify for a GG award at both the 2B and SS position, so according to the author of the article, the 698 inning threshold seems to be the key number.
Keith Law and every other preseason prediction had no idea what any club would do at the deadline.
We were 6 games over at the deadline, after 102 games. We finished 24 games over.
Their predictions at that time need to be viewed with a “context” disclaimer.
Let’s just leave it that both Winn and Edman would be fine at both SS and CF. Will that do?
I like both…I like fast, good defenders. Advantage Edman in that he is a switch hitter. If Winn is anywhere close to Eddie then it will be a good thing.

The Drew bat is a maple Sam Bat…one of the first maple bats. It says St.Louis Cardinals & JD Drew on the bat with a black Sam-Bat logo. Very cool bat.

Yep, jj, predicting team records for a whole season is kind of like the stock market, where you see disclaimers about past performance being no guarantee of future performance. But they do it anyway. Nature of the beast. If it was easy, it would not be interesting nor worthwhile to do. It would be silly to hang your hat on someone’s predictions. Having said that, they’re usually not terribly far off with most teams at the end of the season. Most of us serious fans are usually in the ball park too. I wonder what Law was seeing that others didn’t to predict the Cards to have a losing record? Maybe he thought the Cards were going to do a salary dump at the trade deadline.
What’s really difficult is to predict what kind of MLB performer a player will be when he’s never been higher than A or AA level. Or even AAA for that matter. That’s why those who make these projections, “professionals” included, miss the boat on so many prospects. Hanging your hat on prospect projections is far sillier than hanging your hat on pre-season predictions of team records.
Winn will play SS! If it is not for the Cardinals it will be somewhere else! Edman would have won a Gold glove for sure if he had played 2b all season! I don’t think he will win one at SS but the competition is kinda weak in the NL so he might! If Edman and Winn start together I don’t think Edman will be at SS! Time will tell but Winn has the natural tools to be the best defensive SS we have had since Ozzie! Can he hit mlb pitching? Only one way I k ow of to find out!
Speaking of JD Drew, my son liked him a lot when he started playing in StL. We were going to a lot of games then. I bought him a Drew rookie card. I bet he still has it even though Drew didn’t turn out to be a great Cardinal.
As best as I can tell, Winn will have to demonstrate that he can handle the sort of pitching that’s offered up at the AAA level before he gets a look at what’s in store for him in the Big Leagues. I’m not implying that he’s not up to the task, but when he steps into a Big League batter’s box, he’ll be subjected to an entirely new reality.

Yep 25, it could be clearer. Your second take is correct based on what I’ve read. However, I have read more than one recent article saying the criteria is now 713 innings after the 141st game. Inflation I guess. See the links below. Goold clarifies your question. If they are correct, seems strange the Rawlings site is not up to date.
EuroDandy…Drew had a pretty good 14 year career. I always thought that career wise, he was very similar to another highly touted former Cardinal, Todd Zeile, who played for 16 years.
1toughD, that is or normally the route but people have gone from AA to mlb and excelled immediately! Michael Harris for the Braves comes to mind! I’m hoping Winn will get a shot in spring training and he will take it from there! We need outfield worse than infield right now so perhaps Donovan could move to outfield and Winn and Edman can play middle infield! IF Winn and Walker turn out to be above average MLB players we need them sooner rather than later!

Yes, but he didn’t touch that mysterious ceiling. Regardless of how good he was, the Cards certainly got an enormous return out of drafting him. It ended up being a very good thing for the Cards that TLR believed Drew lacked commitment.
Winn doesn’t have to be better than Ozzie just Tommy Edman and that will be a hard task for an untested rookie.

I don’t think Winn would be on the radar to be the starting SS right away…I’d think he would be a mid season call at best, and then it would matter how Gorman, Donovan and Edman were performing as to how the lineup would shake out. Or maybe one of those guys gets traded for help in another area.
