There is speculation the potential of a 2027 stoppage could affect Donovans’ trade return, and then TEX trades five players for two arb seasons of Gore.

I didn’t say a trade couldn’t happen. I said that matching up values could be tricky due to CBA uncertainty. Apparently Texas and Washington felt like they both got enough value. Time will tell if they were correct.

If you are correct that mlb loses a season on their 0-6 players, including Donovan, there must be a double FA class eventually, for the big budgets to continue to exploit. Just snowballs doesn’t it.

Seattle pitching prospect Jurrangelo Cijntje, mentioned in Brandon Donovan trade speculation, failed to make Keith Law’s Top 100 prospect list released Monday.

Law’s Top 100 list includes seven Seattle prospects, including shortstop Felnin Celesten, who is not on MLB.com Top 100 prospect list.

If Donovan stays in STL he is the everyday LF?

I have Wetherholt penciled in at 2B and Gorman/Saggese at 3B, and Herrera at DH/C.

    My closing thoughts:

Donovan is the player (now and two years from now) that you hope any prospect we receive in trade will ultimately become.

I am grateful for the time Nolan Arenado was a Cardinal no matter what the folks converting his production to a equivalent dollar value say.

The Cards will finish the 2026 season above .500 … I’m excited for the season!

    Go Cards!

If they keep Donovan and he ages well, he could be the veteran leader through the rebuild and into the upcoming contention window.

Even if they do keep him I still think they need to go get a rh hitting outfielder as the other two spots have Nootbar, Scott, Church, and *cough cough* Walker to pick from.

Even if 2 of those 4 are productive you still need a 4th outfielder, plus injuries happen.

ZTR, Donovan could end up being the Whit Merrifield of the Cardinals. Of course, like Whit, he may never see a playoff game in that late career veteran section of his time with the Cardinals.

I would be 100% on board with retaining Donovan if they could come to agreement on an extension. But that hasn’t seemed to be on the table.

At this point, trading him appears to be what is on the table. It would greatly complicate trade scenarios if they were talking extension at the same time.

Once they pull him off the market, maybe they will chat about an extension then. Or more likely IMO, they will reopen trade talks at the deadline.

Bottom line is if someone doesn’t blow us away with an offer I say we keep Donovan. His versatility, defense, and plate discipline are rare. I would like to have seen Wetherholt make the team of spring training, but maybe now you give him more time until May or June in Memphis. By that time, if Gorman is flailing, call him up. I hope Gorman takes this time to improve his game and holes in his swing. I’m now about ready to pencil in Donovan as our opening day second basemen. Let’s see what the trade deadline brings.

Exactly, Cardinals27. From the get-go, the odds of Donny being dealt were miniscule. Especially with the circumstances as they are, the only way the Cardinals would part ways with Donovan is if the offer totally knocked their socks off. But if you’re the Cardinals in this situation, why not dangle him out there to see if any team does the improbable and vastly overpays for his services. As the late George Bush Sr. once said, “read my lips……he’s not going anywhere”.

27 there’s another approach that can start both Donny and JJ. Long-term suggests JJ to 2B. Donny as “Mr. Fix It” from the DH/utility role, while he’s here. Set the D positions for long-term if they want JJ up. Start Donny at 3B Opening Day but lead with his versatility the first half, since it matters very little to his consistency where he plays, or where he bats.

If the Cards do trade Donovan,(which I have serious doubts about) my hope is they can get a comp draft pick in the deal. Maybe Seattle wants JoJo as well and will add the pick with some of their pitching talent!

Interesting point although neither Kade Anderson, Ryan Sloan nor Jurrangelo Cijntje had thrown a professional pitch in November 2024 when pitching coordinator Matt Pierpont left the Seattle Mariners for the Cardinals.

If the Cardinals somehow got Kade Anderson from Seattle I would be esctatic. As high as we are on Liam Doyle I think Anderson is even better. I saw both pitch in college and Anderson was dominant everytime I saw him. He was lights out in the CWS.

    Or

more likely IMO, they will reopen trade talks at the deadline.

That seems like a pretty fair assessment.

Just for fun-What does that take? I can’t think of a trade that makes sense. We are in the business of trying to aquire high end prospects right now. So it would have to be roster players. Donovan and?

So they would be giving Seattle Donovan to upgrade from Doyle to Anderson. I don’t think they do that. Doyle had 70 grade fastball Anderson 60 grade. Both 55 overall. Doyle is lh Anderson lh. I prefer Doyle plus whatever they get for Donovan.

Of course the Cardinals would not trade Brendan Donovan and Liam Doyle for Kade Anderson, but that’s what it would take.

You kind of confirmed my thought-there just isn’t a path to most teams top prospects.

How about Donovan, Jo Jo, and Crooks for Anderson?
