FO and fans always seem to overvalue their prospects. I’ll give a couple examples. If Sloan were to be traded in the Donovan trade, the Cardinals are the ones taking the most risk. A pitcher in Class A is a long ways away from the majors, especially for a proven major leaguer. Back in the day I was hoping the Cards would getb Bobby Miller, maybe in an Edman deal. But his performance declined, and he had that shot to his head. I’m not saying there’s a chance we get Sloan.
January 22, 2026 at 5:47 pm #299685Mud: I second that idea.

jj-cf-stlParticipantSEA can hold to their model and compete, at their budget, consistently. They’ve got a division title again. Time will tell if they figure out how to win with their approach.
January 22, 2026 at 7:24 pm #299689There will likely would be other pieces involved, but this is a starting foundation.
Mariners: Arroyo or Sloan or Montes, fair starting point
Red Sox: Witherspoon or Tolle even though a bat is ideal, nothing lines up (Duran if he negotiates an extension?)
Dodgers: Morales AND River Ryan (with Jojo incl. is all I can come up with) Cards take back Teoscar and give them Noot?
Giants: I don’t see a simple trade here at all… Donnie, Noot, O’Brien and Jojo for Eldridge? Blockbuster of 2026!
Yankees: Spencer Jones, and Cards throw in Noot, Jojo and O’Brien? Christmas comes early for Cards fans!!
Guardians: Chase Delauter, easy one for one deal
Royals: They simply just match up worse than the Giants
Padres: No clue, but Preller has pulled off crazier deals.
Mystery team: Tampa? Detroit(who should be way more all in)? Baltimore? Phillies if Bohm is traded?

The Seattle Mariners and executive Jerry Dipoto didn’t overvalue their prospects when the M’s traded away Freddy Peralta, Pablo Lopez and Zack Littell as distant pitching prospects.
Front offices and their fans tend to overvalue their team’s assets, not just prospects.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI’d prefer Donovan go to an evil empire and increase his chances of winning a ring.
The last time SEA won a division title was Ichiro’s rookie season. They have just four division titles in 50-ish years, never even recording back-to-back division titles, or an LCS win.
Free Donny! (to a winner)
January 23, 2026 at 7:02 am #299697I want the Cardinals to get the highest return possible.
January 23, 2026 at 8:06 am #299703Wait until a contender is desperate because somebody went down. Donnie to the rescue.
January 23, 2026 at 8:24 am #299704
jj-cf-stlParticipantThat sounds more like the Mariners current approach. If they add Donny now, top 100’s are in play.
They patched holes last deadline with short-term rentals using non-100’s. Sound familiar?
The Mariners and Brewers are dangerous clubs at the next CBA. By now they’ve convinced themselves they could win in it all w/a hard cap in place, and that’s a re-run mlb doesn’t need.
January 23, 2026 at 10:48 am #299711What an informative fun thread this has evolved into. We’ve even picked up a great new poster in the likes of “Sweet” Harmony. Let’s hope even after the trade winds have been extinguished, that Harmony still checks in with us on a regular basis. But it still shocks me that everyone and the grandmother still believes Donnie is going to be dealt. NEWS FLASH!…………….he’s not. Carry on wayward sons.

That would be not trading Donovan.
Donovan for STL OF in ’26.
You all will thank me and Pugs later.
January 23, 2026 at 11:53 am #299717Pugs, Harmony and NY, (love you all and the banter fyi)
Edman, in his guest room, already had a king sized Sealy bed, 90” flat screen, unlimited Açaí bowls, mini fridge and a new Gwagon delivered for Donnie this afternoon.
Emil Morales and Rainiel will start in Caterpillar-ville and both come up together at the very end of 2027 and fight for ROY in 2028. It’ll be close….
River Ryan will be SP3 in 2026 and SP 1-2 in 2028.
Teoscar keeps the Cards over 70w in 26-27.
Noot loves SoCal and signs with Prellar in 28.

Brendan Donovan and Jarren Duran were each selected in the seventh round of the 2018 draft but what’s interesting is that Duran was drafted as a second baseman and Donovan as an outfielder:
January 23, 2026 at 5:10 pm #299722Actually, on draft day three in 2018, the Cardinals labeled Donovan as a third baseman. But he also played in the OF in college.

stlcard25ParticipantSteven Gingery. There’s a prospect I hadn’t thought about in a while. He was the definition of TINSTAAPP.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMaybe those prospects will help SEA log their first back-to-back division titles. Depth matters.
January 24, 2026 at 9:03 am #299749JJ, they could sure use a 2B/3B/OF for 5M right? And a very good LHRP to put them over the top? Gotta pay to play though….
January 24, 2026 at 9:50 am #299752
jj-cf-stlParticipantIf SEA chooses to come up light to start the season it allows their youth at mlb to develop. By the deadline, they patch areas of need and chase “90 wins, get in and get hot”. The LaRussa model to us.
If they keep their depth they could stack 90 win seasons using non-100’s at the deadline.
We’ve done 3 division titles in a row. A couple times ago that’s all it accomplished. The most recent has a championship included.
Those small windows close fast, as we know. SEA has a great pipeline that needs an LCS win to help legitimatize their approach, to get past pretending.

ParticipantI dont think the cardinals are going tp trade donovan. Aa always they overvalue a slightly above average player. Shows me again im not sure this team and ownership are really on the right track. They cant get anything right. No one is going to give up sure cant miss prospects for donovan esp right now. Sure at the trade deadline and if they have a def shot at doing something they might but even then a smart team isnt giving away what it appears the cardinals are looking for. The cardinals will end up with nothing.

I think Willie is right about the first 2 and hope he’s wrong about the last. But for some reason I hold out hope Bloom gets some return for Donovan.
January 24, 2026 at 5:24 pm #299773I would be okay to see we add to Donovan with our surplus of lefty starting prospects, or a catching prospect not named Rodriguez to acquire a right handed outfielder or ace type prospect. You just have to find the right fit.
January 24, 2026 at 5:37 pm #299774
jj-cf-stlParticipantCorrectly listening and letting it play out. Next is next when a firm ask gets met. It takes two.
January 24, 2026 at 6:30 pm #299779
jj-cf-stlParticipantThere is speculation the potential of a 2027 stoppage could affect Donovans’ trade return, and then TEX trades five players for two arb seasons of Gore.
Paredes two control seasons for a BOS outfielder seems overdue. Perfect righty pull approach for BOS to target.
