They added Brad Miller, who just leads the team in home runs, RBI and slugging. That is all. His 155 OPS+ is far superior to anything Ozuna delivered as a Cardinal (and isn’t far from Ozuna’s 164 mark with the Braves).
Just because his salary is relatively modest doesn’t mean he should be glossed over as if he is some kind of insignificant fluke. Miller has hit 30 HR before in MLB.
Time to take off the blinders focused only on the young outfielders and look at the OFFENSE. That is what this thread is about, right? 😉

ParticipantAgain, trading some pitching for a guy with a good bat who’s in his early arbitration years may not have increased the payroll by much. Or even trade for a top prospect like O’Neill to fill in the big donut hole.

ParticipantAt this point this team is loaded with mediocre players (excluding Goldschmidt). And because of the salaries which don’t equate with production there are a few with sub-par mediocrity. Of those making little very money… they are just not living up to their potential and are playing well below league average.
I’m not a fan of the All-Star game but if there was one this season Goldschmidt might get chosen by the fans or picked because we have no other serious candidates. Flaherty is not having an AS season…. Yadi would probably miss out because there are other Cs with far superior skills. Wong is a defensive superstar but doesn’t hit well enough to rate higher than others.
So my question to Mozeliak is where’s the beef? Your crossed fingers aren’t working out so well so far. What we have here is a mediocre team that most Card fans would be very happy just to make the eight team play-offs but with little hope to advance very far. Last year’s debacle against the Nationals with basically the same team still haunts me.
Just keeping it real.
September 10, 2020 at 10:38 am #139510Real? Which reality?
Goldschmidt has a .964 OPS. If the Cardinals had a lineup of “mediocre” players like him, they would be leading the league in wins. For reference, the team OPS is .721. Combined MLB OPS is .745.
Wainwright is 4-0 with a 2.68 ERA and has won at least three huge, momentum-swinging games. He would also be an excellent all-star selection (if there were any). That bum Flaherty only has a 2.95 ERA. Trade him! Hudson is at 3.19. Has to be a fluke! Dump him, too…
September 10, 2020 at 10:51 am #139513Bccran, so you want to trade pitching for another O’Neill? You have spent a lot of this thread telling how bad O’Neill is. Now you want another like him? How is that going to help the offense if he is doing bad?

Among starters with 20 IP, Kim is 1st, Waino 22nd, Flaherty 29th and Hudson 36th in ERA. That’s among 136 such starters. Super mediocre.

ParticipantYes, Wainwright has been just great and might get some consideration. Right now the other two are buried by other talent throughout the league. Did I skip Goldschnidt? Went back and looked…. nope. You must have a different view on what mediocrity is than I do. Don’t forget…. I’m a huge Cardinals fan…. ask anyone who knows me. What I commented is my take on this team right now and for me it rings true.
September 10, 2020 at 11:59 am #139530Ny, you specifically stated that the mediocre players include Goldschmidt. I feel that assessment itself to be mediocre. 😉
mediocre – adjective
of only moderate quality; not very good.September 10, 2020 at 12:12 pm #139532bccran
Participant14 – It seems that if a poster on here offers an opinion that is less than rosy, they are called to task. Even if their opinion is backed up by facts. Right now we have an outfield problem. In the aggregate, O’Neill, Bader, and Thomas are hitting .190. Thankfully, Goldy, DeJong, Edman, Miller, and Yadi to a certain extent are producing. So was Dexter, before he went down. Hopefully those 3 outfielders can live up to the potential Mo sees on them. And sooner rather than later.
September 10, 2020 at 1:22 pm #139534Right now we have an outfield problem
I would phrase it as we have a budgetary problem, which is a cause of the OF problem. You can’t solve the latter without first solving the former.
September 10, 2020 at 3:06 pm #139571Regarding the budget, if they trade CMart and Wong, they can reduce payroll by $24M. After 2021 they have Carpenter, Andrew Miller, and Fowler coming off the books. That totals out to $47M.
September 10, 2020 at 3:12 pm #139573I would be surprised if they trade Wong. CMart might be a trade candidate but his value doesn’t seem very high.
You also have to figure in potential arbitration raises for Flaherty, Gant, Hicks, Brebbia, Bader, and Reyes.
September 10, 2020 at 3:24 pm #139576
stlcard25ParticipantBaseball reference has the Cards at $122M payroll for 2022 without the Cmart and Carp options exercised. I’d peg Carlos as 50/50 that it gets picked up and Carp at a much lower value. Things really jump in 2023. It’s a ways off, but the projected payroll is $191.4M. Ouch.

ParticipantForsch –
All along I’ve said O’Neill had a high power ceiling. If he can improve his pitch selection and continue to cut down on his strike outs he can be a force.September 10, 2020 at 4:46 pm #139594
jj-cf-stlParticipantI hear you bikemike. Been biting my tongue all offseason and now half-season in, and it just came out.
I don’t know that it will get any better going forward either, regarding the troll, unless he backs off with the Cardinal bashing, or the site activates an ignore feature to block selected posters.
We’ll have to see, but know this Mike, I will take a stand for these Cardinals. I wouldn’t put up with this constant bashing of our boys at the stadium, and I keep asking myself why I am here, by a supposed Cardinal fan.
If ya’ll need to dump me, do it. I’ll support your decision 100%.

Participantjj –
1.) I would ask you to please back off calling me a troll, since name calling is against forum rules.
2.) I would also ask you to please respect me as a fellow Cardinal fan and act accordingly. We all have our opinions and should respect them, even if they’re diametrically opposed.Thank you very much.

ParticipantTrue we should be civil to one another but at the same time, if you are going to give opinions, you have to have big shoulders to carry other peoples thoughts of those opinions.
September 10, 2020 at 9:22 pm #139642Brian, unless I’m missing something, part of your issue with Ny’s statements is a mis-read. Ny said “excluding” Goldy. I know there are others that you took exception to, but Goldy was the main one I believe.
Pugs, you might need to deliver one more round of mediation to make sure the lid stays on and none of our redbird fans fly the coop.
September 10, 2020 at 9:47 pm #139643bccran
ParticipantWillie – I agree. Some posters get down right hostile when they disagree with your opinion. Especially if your opinion is tinged with a tad of negativity.
September 10, 2020 at 10:23 pm #139645JJ – You’re not going anywhere…. you’re at home here with your friends. Please accept Cranny’s extended olive branch. It’s too bad that trolling cubbie fans don’t wade in our waters from time to time looking for a good fight, so that we couldn’t take out any sports frustrations that we may harbor upon them. I recall one real cocky cub fan a few years back who was looking to duke it out with us. Euro Dandy absolutely destroyed the dude with a verbal barrage that would have made Alec Baldwin’s famed speech to the salesmen in the hit movie, ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’, sound like something straight out of ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. I have little doubt that to this day, that the guy hasn’t even thought about picking up a cup of coffee after Euro’s undressing.
September 10, 2020 at 11:03 pm #139654Yep, I misread Ny’s post – twice. It does say exclude, not include. My apology, Ny. Thanks for clearing that up, Euro.
To add what has already been offered on the person-to-person discord, a good rule to follow is to disagree with the post, rather than the poster. That keeps the discussion focused on baseball, rather than each other.

ParticipantVery good advice, BW. And I know you’ll jump in if that is breached with name calling (like “troll”, moron, etc.). That behavior is totally against what you want for this forum, and I know you won’t tolerate it.
September 11, 2020 at 4:59 pm #139695
jj-cf-stlParticipantIf it waddles like a duck, and quakes like a duck, it’s a duck. Too funny.
bccran, I snapped at you because you’ve trolled me (and others) for months. I’ve seen it and so have others. It’s your O’Neill / Bader hate, I guess you can’t stop yourself.
I researched and published the 7 day team stats, to share with the community, and they did show Bader in a good light. Couldn’t have that could you. I’ve shared those numbers before but this time Bader looked good.
Bam, there you are right on my heels with “a certain poster would have you believe…”. That’s trolling. And you’ve done it behind me, when I have gone from thread to thread. Enough already. Check your Bader / O’Neill hate dude.
Those are BR’s stats, sorted descending, not mine. They only used the 9 highest PA’s. I don’t have an agenda, but you definitely do. If I can’t share weekly stats without you trolling me with “a certain poster would have you believe…”.
You have convinced me thoroughly, that paying a membership fee to be trolled, is a bad idea. Mine will be allowed to expire, and that’s a 100% about you. Sad, because it’s a great site with knowledgable posters, but who wants to be constantly trolled for months because they mention anything positive about O’Neill / Bader?
That all I have.
September 11, 2020 at 5:43 pm #139697Oh oh. Come on, JJ. Drop it…. don’t want to lose you. Think about it…..Cranny is NOT some troll.
September 11, 2020 at 6:02 pm #139700bccran
ParticipantI guess the fact that I thought Mo should have picked up an outfielder in addition to picking up Miller (who is mainly an infielder) rubbed some posters the wrong way. I admit that I’m not a fan Bader, for a number of reasons, but would like to see O’Neill come through because of his way above average power potential. When I compiled at the stats of our outfielders at AA, A+, and A (outside of Carlson), it was more than a little startling. That’s why I’d like for Mo to make a move if he can. Just an opinion, and many of us have them. Right or wrong.
