January 12, 2020 at 8:06 pm #119277It’s nice to have the media focus on us, even if it’s not likely to come to fruition. Makes us look like we have the talent to compete for these type of big name players.
January 12, 2020 at 8:12 pm #119279interesting info?
Carpenter’s contract includes a no-trade clause for 2020 and 2021, although it does not take effect until Opening Day; his current contract includes a $1 million trade assignment bonus that would apply anytime between now and the start of the regular season.January 12, 2020 at 8:30 pm #119283Great info Simba, where did u find that?
January 12, 2020 at 8:35 pm #119286The part of Jon Morosi’s piece that caught my attention was when he said the Cardinals were determined to add one elite player before spring training begins. That is certainly new news.
He states that if not Arenado they will shift their attention to Lindor.January 12, 2020 at 8:37 pm #119287https://www.mlb.com/news/nolan-arenado-cardinals-trade-interest This was an article previously posted by GameCard
January 12, 2020 at 9:28 pm #119294Not for nothing but the Rangers, which were mentioned in the Morosi story signed Todd Frazer today. Sounds like they don’t want to continue in the bidding and another team has the inside track on a potential deal. Also, Atlanta, Minnesota, and Washington are vying for Donaldson, but I don’t see Minnesota or Atlanta going after Arenado. Who knows if this happens but it is exciting to think about. He’d be the best option at 3B since Scott Rolen manned the hot corner. Another huge bat in the middle of the order. Hopefully they don’t have to dig too deep but I’m afraid this may be a very costly trade to pull off. That gives me pause that the Cardinals actually end up going there, but the options are thin to fill the MOTOB they need to pair with Goldschmidt. I guess we will know soon enough if Morosi is right about this or not.
January 12, 2020 at 9:34 pm #119295If the choice is Arenado or Lindor, I would choose Lindor.
January 12, 2020 at 9:45 pm #119297Morosi’s article was 95% speculation and said everything that’s already been “reported”.
January 12, 2020 at 9:49 pm #119298Looking at it in a different light. I would take Arenado/ Dejong over Lindor/Carpenter.
January 12, 2020 at 10:40 pm #119302I’m all for Lindor or Arenado as a preface, but not to punt on 2022. Carlson, Herrera and Liberatore are my don’t even consider trading unless it’s for 4+ years of a MOO bat.
DeJong, Woodford and Gant for Lindor would be something to at least consider….
January 12, 2020 at 10:51 pm #119303Castellanos at 3/45 if DFoul can be traded with 8 included and CMart for a closer and prospect to balance out the payroll still makes the most sense.
With 4 years of control on CMart, does Toronto have any interesting prospects? They need a CF too, so maybe Bader and CMart for Giles and ______ and _____?
January 13, 2020 at 9:12 am #119320Morosi’s article was 95% speculation
How do we know that?

This makes the most sense to me too. Don’t get me wrong, the idea of adding Arenado or Lindor is very intriguing but I think we would be better off adding that kind of player in two years once most of our albatross and legacy lifetime achievement contracts are gone (Carp, Fowler, Cecil, Leake, Miller, Waino, Yadi, etc…)
Give me Castellanos and Brad Hand and we are ready to make a deep postseason run this year.
January 13, 2020 at 9:49 am #119327I really hate taking on a player who isn’t a good fielder. As soon as he signs, I start wondering how long it will take to solve the problem of having a poor defensive player on the field.
January 13, 2020 at 9:59 am #119329Did you dislike Matt Holliday?
January 13, 2020 at 10:22 am #119331I have to agree with BHC in that Morosi did not tell us anything in that article that is new.
By the simple fact that Mozeliak did not shut down the rumor 100% on Sunday, we can all surmise the two sides have talked. Morosi offered no insight into what was discussed. (In his defense, saying nothing is better than what others said over the weekend.)
And the whole Lindor thing at the end reads like another dart-throw. Not to mention the fact the Cardinals do not need middle infielders. Then, this morning, he threw his own cold water on Lindor being moved, probably after others in the know read his article and told him that it is unlikely.
Gotta love the rumor mill…
A Nolan Arenado trade is more likely now than a Mookie Betts or Francisco Lindor trade, multiple @MLB sources have told me in the last 48 hours. @MLBNetwork

January 13, 2020 at 10:46 am #119335St. Louis intends to add one star-level position player before Spring Training begins next month, and Arenado is an appealing option if the Cardinals don’t re-sign free-agent outfielder Marcell Ozuna.
This was the part of Morosi’s article that was new to me. I hadn’t heard anything like that this winter. Actually we have been led to believe the exact opposite was more likely.

Brian, the impression I get is that you detest the hot stove league.
January 13, 2020 at 10:53 am #119338OK, fair point, but how in the heck would he know what the Cards intend – especially when it is the opposite of their public stance, as you note?
I just find it hard to believe the Cards have a secret plan that only Passan knows about.
My belief if they add a position player is that he has it out of order. The Cards know they have right of last refusal on Ozuna (he has pretty much admitted that) so they can afford to look elsewhere to see if they can do better, knowing Ozuna is the ace in the hole – if they decide to add anyone.
P.S. I suppose that if they end up trading more outfielders away to get their all-star, then they could also sign Ozuna to fill the gap they create… But the much higher odds are that won’t happen because the salary equation will be very hard to close.

I enjoy the silly season, although the part that I don’t care for is the rush to be first to break a story without caring if any of it is true.

I detest the irresponsible reporting because so many fans do not distinguish between reputable journalists and click-chasers.
P.S. I want to be clear that I do not consider Passan irresponsible. He put enough weasel words around the Lindor part. It is just that people read a lot more into this than likely intended.
My point is that the part I hate most is the over-the-top fan reaction, which is much worse on social media and in other forums than here. Personally, I can filter out the noise, but here, I also try to help others establish their own personal “BS meter”. 😉

I don’t know where he is getting his information from. I am assuming he has a source or multiple sources somewhere that are reliable. He doesn’t seem the type to just make stuff up from nothing, maybe stretch the truth though. These national writers probably get paid to break stories.

I hear you but professional sports are also a customer oriented business. I see nothing wrong with letting fans have some fun once in awhile and ponder what could be. Not all fans like talking prospects 24/7/365 like we do here. Different strokes for different folks I guess.
January 13, 2020 at 11:15 am #119343IMO, Passan has been the best national guy this winter at breaking news. We will see soon enough if the Cards end up adding anyone.
