ParticipantEarlier in this thread I said what I thought were Matheny’s strengths and weaknesses. That’s hardly a one sided view. Have asked others to comment on both the strengths and weaknesses, but only one other poster has done that so far.
Now, how about some discussion on how all the sabermetrics may be preventing a set everyday lineup.
October 14, 2017 at 8:53 am #36021Saw two articles drawing comparisons between the Cardinals and the John Farrell firing in Boston.
The Southern Illinoisan said:
“By firing Farrell, the Red Sox have done what the Cardinals aren’t willing to do. They drew a line in the sand that says being good isn’t good enough. The Red Sox expect more, and so should the Cardinals.”
KSDK Channel 5 wonders why the Cardinals are so protective of Matheny.

Participant1.) Who’s Dan Buffa? What gives him any credentials and makes him an expert on baseball? Most people in St. Louis wouldn’t even know who he is. Isn’t he co-created of the web site movie-critic.com?
2. The newspaper article is from a small town over 100 miles south of St. Louis. There’s no credibility there.
Two small time writers shouldn’t be used to try to sway opinion on our manager.
October 14, 2017 at 9:37 am #36023bccran
ParticipantDan Buffa graduated from Brentwood High School and went to St. Louis Cummunity College for 2 years? Those are his credentials?
October 14, 2017 at 10:38 am #36026@bccran – You constantly cite your ANONYMOUS sources within the Cardinals organization, and then get upset whenever anybody dares question those sources or whatever statements you attribute to them, even though those statements often sound like nothing more than personal opinions or narratives. And you want to talk about credibility?
Then, you bash a guy for starting a website unrelated to sports? You want to bash him for going to St. Louis Community College? You couldn’t even spell Community right.
And you bash an article that came from a newspaper 100 miles from St. Louis? Do you know how journalists get started? THEY START IN SMALL MARKETS AND WORK THEIR WAY UP. I had friends (husband and wife) that started in West Lafayette, IN. Then they moved to Birmingham AL. Then, Minneapolis, MN. And so on. Every move was made with the idea of getting to a larger market, even if they had to start over as low man on the totem pole making less than the jobs they just left to move to a more expensive market. The name of the game in journalism is keep working your way up until you get where you want to be.
That wasn’t the first article to say Matheny should be fired, and it won’t be the last.

ParticipantSorry, 2016, but citing obscure writers to make negative points about our manager isn’t very impressive. Also about the misspelling of community. Posting on this little iPhone while watching my granddaughter’s soccer game onthis bright sunny Saturday morning has it limitations.
October 14, 2017 at 11:26 am #36030I don’t know Dan Buffa well, but I first met him a few years ago when he was working at the next table as a credentialed member of the media at a Cardinals team event. I have also appeared several times as a guest on his radio show in St. Louis. As far as his background, I have never felt the need to investigate it, but it would seem to be sufficient for his ongoing employment by Channel 5.
As is the case with every columnist I have ever read, there are times I agree and times I disagree. But, when I do disagree, it is with their writings, not their personal qualifications. Then again, I put my name on everything I write, which is different from most of you here.
As far as regional newspapers go, the Cardinals are a regional team, with broad support in many states. That is especially the case in Southern Illinois, where I know at least one paper has had a daily beat writer assigned to cover the Cardinals for years, with several writers members of the St. Louis BBWAA chapter. (A paper whose credibility you questioned a few weeks ago.)
Further, assessing credibility based on distance would seem to suggest that national writers would not be qualified to write about any team, except for maybe the one that happens to be in their back yard.
October 14, 2017 at 12:25 pm #36031Bccran, I have to pile on here. We (including you) all opine on the Cardinals. If you dont value someone’s opinion you are free to ignore it. I even have no problem with you questioning someone’s credibility if you are able to show there is a reason they are not credible. The fact you have never heard of them is not a reason to make the accusation that they are not credible. (Note: I dont know who you are, does that make you not credible?)
Why dont you rebutt the article if you think the guy is wrong? Or is it much easier to shoot the messenger if you can’t rebutt the facts?
I also feel confident that Brian would post any articles that he came across supporting Matheny – no matter where the writer went to school.
October 14, 2017 at 12:42 pm #36032Bc uses “anonymous” Cardinal sources. That doesn’t seem credible.
October 14, 2017 at 12:50 pm #36033I don’t find the discussion in these last few posts particularly useful, and even less interesting to read. Opinions are just that, opinions. You can agree with them or not. If not, you can say why, or remain silent and move on.
I enjoy this site and love to read what most of you think about the various aspects of my favorite baseball team, especially because so many of you are up to your adam’s apples in statistics, which I am far too lazy to seek out myself.
Please don’t ruin it.October 14, 2017 at 12:51 pm #36034bccran
ParticipantGreat idea, CC. That’s all I’ve ever asked for. Brian, would you mind researching and finding some positive articles supporting Matheny to provide some balance? Thanks very much. That would be great and very appreciated.
On the other hand, is it enough to know that true baseball experts like BDW and JM still support MM (as opposed to obscure small town writers in Carbondale/Belleville or TV guys who who aren’t employees of the station but report occasionally on a variety of subjects).
The true problem is posters acting like any reporters who support their dislike of MM are credible, no matter who they are.
If I posted an article by reporter who supported MM who writes for the Peoria or Joplin newspaper I’d be clobbered by the anti MM crowd.
October 14, 2017 at 1:00 pm #36035I doubt you would be clobbered by doing that. People might (rightly?) point out that the writer is out of touch with most of the fan base but I doubt they would question where the writer went to school (unless it was Chicago lol).
I read a site that aggregates Cardinal articles from the web on a daily basis. I cant remember the last pro Matheny article I saw. Feel free to post any you find.
October 14, 2017 at 1:12 pm #36036To repeat, everyone has a right to post links to articles related to the Cardinals here, positive or negative. If there are articles you want to share, please feel free to share them. It is that simple.
October 14, 2017 at 1:22 pm #36039Cranny’s got a man crush on MM. We just have to live with it.

October 14, 2017 at 1:27 pm #36041A quick google search “Cardinals should keep Matheny” did not result in any pro-Matheny article. It actually all negative articles (not to my surprise).

ParticipantCC –
I really don’t know what else you want. I and others have cited on here that one season the Cards led the majors in WAR innings lost to injury. Another year they had more rookies come up than any other team in MLB. A third year they had the second most rookies. This season I have cited the loss of Reyes, the slide of Leake, the failures of Peralta, Diaz, Piscotty, Oh, Broxton, Socolovich, etc. The injuries to Gyorko, Fowler, Rosenthal, Wong, etc.
I don’t deal in opinions of obscure little known sports writers.
Only the facts as I just stated above. That I’ve stated several times now, but no one seems to accept or even want to discuss.October 14, 2017 at 2:24 pm #36045I dont want anything. Have you ever read where I indicated Matheny should be let go? A few mild criticisms, yes – as well as a few defenses. But if defending the rights of others to criticize makes me anti-Matheny in your book, so be it. I would also defend the right of anyone to support Matheny as well.
If you dont want to deal with opinions of obscure writers, feel free not to. I just dont understand why you cant let others who choose to do so, feel free to do so.
October 14, 2017 at 2:27 pm #36046Because you use those “facts” as an excuse for the team’s overall performance when every team deals with adversity. I’ve already told you that you use that list as a crutch. Its hilarious you attack a sports writer as being obscure therefore dismissing their articles. When you start adding up the amount of negative articles against Matheny, including those calling for his firing, they outweigh those that support him which I can’t seem to find any. BDW and JM are hoping they didn’t make the wrong decision with Matheny is which is why they are giving him another year with different coaching staff. They’ve already changed the 3B Coach twice under Matheny and now the pitching and bullpen coaches. This is Matheny’s last year to prove he isn’t a bust.

ParticipantIt took me 15 seconds to find a positive article. It’s on vivaelbirdos regarding MM’s statements on players taking a knee during the national anthem. The last sentence of the article – “Sunday was an example of Mike Matheny demonstrating the quality for which he is most praised: managing people”.
Google it.
October 14, 2017 at 3:54 pm #36049I tbought you were looking for articles that endorsed Matheny remaining as manager – or maybe you were and you couldn’t find any?
Who is John Fleming? Lol

ParticipantCome on, CC. You’re better than that. My request this whole thread has been to assess MM’s strengths and weaknesses. Most have refused to to address any strengths, including our moderator. If you want me to find other positive articles or assessments I’ll be happy to do so when I have time. The degree of one sided negativism on here re MM has been nauseating.
October 14, 2017 at 8:13 pm #36055Sorry bccran, I am not better than that. I agree there is too much Matheny negativity but it is what it is. If that is how people feel, this thread allows them to express that. I cant defend Matheny emperically through his actions. I cant defend him through an eye test. What I thought was strong leadership seemed to have crumbled this year. I only support him because his teams win games. I think they underperformed this year and that is on him. I am willing to go one more year but a playoff miss for me means both Matheny and Mo must go. Unlikely to hapoen (particularly Mo) but that is how I feel. No more excuses. Win or go home. Every team has holes, injuries, rookies, etc. Just because most on this board and in the media aren’t as patient as me doesnt make them wrong. Why you choose to take their disagreement with you so personally I have no idea. If you have actually defended Matheny’s management skills somewhere in this thread I either missed it or have forgotten it. All you have done it seems to me is give excuses why he hasn’t won the last few years. Just because those excuses are good enough for you (and to me to a certain extent) doesnt mean they are syfficient for others. Why is that not acceptable to you? The reality is probably like most things; he is probably not as bad as some think or as good as others think.

ParticipantThis thread was quiet, peaceful, and put to bed without any new posts for a number of days until Brian posted 2 slash and burn articles about MM that he knew would revive it and stir the pot. Articles by no names that didn’t need to be posted. He asks posters not to egg other posters on. It’s good advice to follow.
October 15, 2017 at 12:06 am #36070bccran
ParticipantJust thought about it a little more. You’re right, CC. This thread is a thread to vent about MM. To say as many negative things about him as possible and look for agreement. Most have wanted to pile on all that negativism about MM, including our moderator who is also a poster. I should have bowed out a long time ago. I was looking for a logical discussion on MM’s strengths and weaknesses. We all have them. Every major league manager has them. I listed my thoughts on both re MM. Others said they had no interest. Bad thread for an optimist and one who gives the benefit of the doubt. But I took the bait on the obscure two no mames. My apologies.
October 15, 2017 at 7:48 am #36084There was only one person who got stirred and upset by the articles Brian posted and that person dismissed the writers as being trivial and obscure instead of trying to dismiss their points. When you trash the writers instead of the articles you essentially show you can’t make a valid argument.
