Ozuna in his career year might be a Motobat but the huge question is was it just that a career year if so cards screwed up yet again

What if Tommy Pham just had a career year? Fowler? I feel a hell of lot more comfortable thinking Ozuna can come close to repeating last seasonthan i would about Pham?Fowler repeating.

He was crushing it in 2016 before a wrist injury derailed his career. Also I mentioned that he was called up straight from high-A in 2013 at age 22, so his career numbers are going to be depressed. I like that he is only going to be 27 next year too. Right in his prime, unlike JD Martinez, Jay Bruce, etc.

Nice to get a big bat. Often age 27 is when players are at their peak, which is Ozuna’s age. The Cards are banking on him remaining productive while he is under the club’s control. He should be, although the risk is last year is an outlier.

But man, I hate giving up two of the top pitching prospects. I would have given up one, plus someone like Wacha, Sherriff, Brebbia etc. And I hope the outfielder going the other way is Grichuk, as I still see hope for Piscotty; Grichuk is what he is, as the saying goes.

But obviously one premium prospect was not enough for Miami. Sometimes you gotta roll the dice and take a shot, and that’s what the Cardinals did. We’ll look back in three years and see how it worked out.

I am neutral on this deal. I am not a big fan of it, yet the club is dead set on adding offense, and maybe it will work out as you never know about prospects. The thing is, the offense has been better the last two years than in the previous two (’14 and ’15), and those teams had better records. The difference is that the pitching and defense have been worse, plus it seems that we were much better at the fundamentals then than in the last two seasons. Last year was abysmal. I am just not sure trading what could be premium pitching, an area where we have regressed, is the smart thing to do.

Reminder for the second-guessers from Bob Nightengale:

The #Marlins realize that Christian Yellich wants out but they say they have no intention of trading him at this time

As I stated before Ozuna wouldn’t have been my first choice but I hope he does well and 2017 wasn’t a fluke for him.

Hopefully this is just the first in a series of moves. Let’s go get more.

Several sources (Heyman, etc;) say Alcantara for sure to Miami.

Man I love this deal if it’s just Alcantara and some other minor leaguers “of less ilk”…of course that could include some of my personal favorites like Delvin Perez or Jordan Hicks or Alvaro Seijas!

I would guess somebody like Hudson or Gallen would be one of the other pitchers, and I assume there is an OF going to Miami…

What are we going to do with all the other outfielders that we have? We have another one now.

Longshot guess here, but I’m predicting Alcantara, Grichuk, Jake Woodford, Z Gallen and Conner Jones…… likely way off, but that would make sense.

Nightengale tweeted Grichuk is not part of the deal

No Grichuk, Piscotty, or O’Neill. Those are the most valuable. Personally, I like Arozarena and Garcia long-term more than Sierra, Bader, or Mercado. Then you get into the lower level guys like Carlson, Plummer, and Denton.

Very good question, Grichuk and Piscotty are almost as good as gone right?

Ozuna, Pham and Fowler will be the starting OF, Jose Martinez will likely be the 4th OF.

There is still Bader, Oneill, Sierra, Arozarena, Mercado, Garcia, who are all either ready or will be soon.

If Grichuk and Piscotty are both moved, who fills in as the 5th? And what if we make another trade for an OF or sign a Jay Bruce type (which I’m for).

Also, would Sierra or Bader even count as “other minor leaguers”, they finished the year on the MLB roster.

Bader wouldn’t count as a lesser prospect for sure

Good point….. since they are still on all the prospects lists, I personally still consider them prospects/minor leaguers.

If the OF is a lesser prospect than Alcantara, it might be Garcia that is traded…

Piscotty might be traded to Oakland for relievers – the Cardinals still need to find a suitor for Grichuk, with Arizona and KC probably most inclined to look at him
