Go with the kids.Between O`Neill,Thomas,Arozarena a combination of the 3 should hold the fort. With the 3 kids and Bader and the albatross Fowler that should take care of the OF.You have Justinb Williams and Carlson getting ready in Memphis and if all else fails you can play granite golove JMartinez for short periods.
December 21, 2019 at 1:23 pm #117253My guess the Cards won’t go beyond two years and $30 MM, which won’t be enough to get the deal done.
It allows the Cardinals to say “Hey we tried.” lol
December 21, 2019 at 2:09 pm #117254Agreed, BHC, but anyone who follows the team should have already understood that. No matter what, the complainers will be out in full force once he signs – whether here or there.
In fact, if he returns, then a 40-man spot will have to be cleared. And once again, when it is not Brett Cecil removed, for logical reasons, the same wailing will be repeated again.
P.S. And what is bad about setting a limit and sticking to it? And what is bad about them keeping the lines open until Ozuna actually signs somewhere else?
December 21, 2019 at 3:44 pm #117258<Brian wrote: Same question to you, MM3. What is your max in years and money? Rats said 3/45.>
I am terrible at figuring those things because none of us know the inside workings of the FO on budgets, etc. I don’t think Rats is far off but I am a cheapskate so I would probably offer no more than 2/26-30. The difference between 26 and 30 would be incentives.I have said it before but in my perfect world, all ball players would be paid on a production basis. Base pay plus added pay for certain benchmarks – hits, homeruns, triples, etc. Maybe designate a cut of the gate to be destributed to the players meaning winning would induce a bigger gate. I know – pipe dreams – but if nobody ever says it then it will never happen.

Not directed at any specific poster but you can sling all the stones and arrows you want at JMart. He adds a lot more than he takes away from this team. I, for one, am of the opinion that had it not been for his performances in that last 4 game set in Chicago, the Cards would likely not have even been in the playoffs.
December 21, 2019 at 4:00 pm #117261Indeed, MM3. In a perfect world, all labor compensation would be based on a commission only basis like auto salespeople receive. You get paid what you produce. I worked a few commission only jobs as a very young man and fared quite well considering it was the late 80’s- early 90’s. I earned right in the neighborhood of $800 a week while in college, managing a boiler room. Then right out of school, before I figured out what I wanted to do, I delivered bottled water for Hinckley & Schmitt for roughly 55K…..100% commission based.
December 21, 2019 at 4:32 pm #117266How do you measure production in a boiler room? BTU’s produced? Shovels of coal?
December 21, 2019 at 4:36 pm #117267Thanks, MM3. I did not mean to put you on the spot. I just try to have more specific conversation, because anyone can say, “I would bring him back.” But the reality is that we would all have a limit and knowing that before time allows us to check after the fact if we would have been able to sign him or not.
I was thinking about incentives, too. Too bad performance-related bonuses were banned, so they would have to be games played or plate appearances or the like. But it could be used to close a gap in money, if there is one.

I didn’t know that. So now they call them ‘incentives.’…..lol
Pug’s boiler room comment – I don’t think he meant an actual boiler room but, with Pugs, who knows. My incentives plan would include a very decent starting salary and be increased with experience PLUS the incentives but since they have a union, you can forget such a rad plan.
December 25, 2019 at 5:18 pm #117599Any news on the Ozuna front? Now that Arizona has signed Calhoun I doubt Ozuna becomes Arizuna. I am starting to think he does indeed end up back under the Arch next year.

December 25, 2019 at 6:05 pm #117601There is a good chance that the White Sox and the Reds get Castellanos and Ozuna.
December 26, 2019 at 7:37 am #117628Or not…
If the Reds are indeed making a push for Akiyama as this suggests, that has interesting implications for the #stlcards. With Encarnacion going to the White Sox, there are only so many chairs left for Marcell Ozuna. Could he be the new 2019 Moustakas, backed into a one year deal? https://t.co/cm4ixTcbKy

stlcard25ParticipantI wonder at what level the Cards would become interested in a reunion? If it was 1 year and $14M? I’m not sure where the point is that they’d find the certainty of a solid bat in the lineup better than the draft pick.
December 26, 2019 at 8:39 am #117645This could turn into a situation worth monitoring.
I mean the Cardinals would probably be a better team with Ozuna compared to what they have now but at what cost? Like stl25 mentioned a one year deal might be worth it but frankly I just don’t see the need to spend a lot of money on Ozuna when we have internal replacements that can probably put up similar production at a fraction of the cost. Or someone like Corey Dickerson who would probably be cheaper than Ozuna. The thing is that I really want that extra draft pick. That has real value and the Cardinals have a history of turning those extra picks into very good players.
Ozuna may have overplayed his hand though. He has draft pick compensation attached to him and Castellanos does not. Big difference. Ozuna may have to take a Moose pillow deal.
December 26, 2019 at 9:10 am #117653
stlcard25ParticipantOzuna could see similar fruit to Moose if he had a good year next year and re-entered the market at 30 years old. Of course it’s a risk, but in the right situation I think he could be a guy who hits 35 HR and has a solid average.
December 26, 2019 at 9:14 am #117654Where is the Marcell Ozuna of 2017? .312/.376/.548 with 124 RBI I remember when St. Louis was trying to acquire him that MO made the comment that the Cardinals had seen so much of Ozuna at the Roger Dean complex in Jupiter that they felt they knew the player they were getting.

It certainly is strange, but it’s at least fair to note that he had Yelich, Stanton and Realmuto in the lineup with him. The Marlins’ park is no hitter’s Haven, to be sure, however.
December 26, 2019 at 9:32 am #117662That same 2017 version of Ozuna won the Gold Glove Award. Go figure.
A side point, 26 MLB players hit more home runs than Ozuna last season.
Correction: To have been accurate, the above should have said “outfielders”, which was not how I had intended to sort the data. As Pads noted below, Ozuna was much farther down the list – tied for 59th (per Fangraphs data) – among all MLB home run hitters in 2019. This even better supports my point that his production, while good, was not extraordinary.
December 26, 2019 at 10:32 am #117668PadsFS
ParticipantDue to his injury, he missed some games. Given his HR/game average, he would’ve had about 33-34 HRs without the injury. That would put him around 32nd. I think you put the wrong number, he was 56th in home runs last year.

Probably not until spring training and until his price has dropped below the qualifying offer….The rest of the NL Central isn’t exactly having a stellar offseason so far.
Due to his injury, he missed some games. Given his HR/game average, he would’ve had about 33-34 HRs without the injury.
Had he not missed a month of the season, and had he hit 34 HR’s, he would have wound up tied with Paul Goldschmidt, as a point of reference.
December 26, 2019 at 11:24 am #117675I think Marcel is looking for a 3 year deal at probably in the range of 36-40 mil. If more, he is not worth it. But somebody mentioned 1yr @14 mil to return to the Cards. Not likely as he has already turned down 17.8 mil. The Reds do seem interested but Castellanos is probably already a goner to the White Sox. Marcel may just be another Moose type signing. But I think the Cards would take it back but not by breaking the bank.
December 26, 2019 at 11:45 am #11767933-34 HR’s from LF sounds appealing.

Moustakas turned down the QO two years in a row before accepting deals of $6.5M and $10M (IIRC) after all other avenues had been exhausted. For Marcell’s sake, I hope he does better than that.
December 26, 2019 at 3:34 pm #117684The Reds do seem interested but Castellanos is probably already a goner to the White Sox
The White Sox signed Edwin Encanarcion last night so that might take them out of the running for Castellanos.
December 26, 2019 at 4:09 pm #117685Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t the Yanks use Encarnacion more for DH and 1B while Castellanos was more an outfielder.
