The Sox wanted a bat. They already added Nomar Mazara from Texas to play in right. Eloy Jimenez is in left. Center is a placeholder if they decide not to have Luis Robert on the team Opening Day.
Once they acquired Mazara, I did not see how Ozuna or Castellanos would fit. Now with Encarnacion, it seems even less likely.
December 26, 2019 at 7:06 pm #117690Trade Rumors has a piece on the White Sox outfield situation and it appears that Ozuna may not be on their radar any longer. He may still be on the Red list and Puig may be on the Marlins list -one of the few teams interested in him.
December 27, 2019 at 9:40 am #117727The #WhiteSox, making dramatic improvements after spending $195.5 million in free agency this winter, will now focus on improving the bullpen. They're not actively involved in the free-agent derby for OFs Yasiel Puig or Nick Castellanos, saying they're committed to Nomar Mazara

December 27, 2019 at 9:55 am #117730The White Sox also brought back Jose Abreu. I don’t see where they have anymore room for a big bat.
Ozuna is going to end up back in St. Louis on a one year Moose pillow deal isn’t he? Oh well, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen but I would still rather have the draft pick.

December 28, 2019 at 12:28 pm #117789One of the hosts on MLB network said that Ozuna can get three years but he’s holding out for four years. Sometimes the strategy of wait, wait, and then wait some more can backfire.
December 28, 2019 at 8:13 pm #117805I might go four years for Ozuna if the AAV wasn’t too bad. The reason being is that I just don’t like any of our other cleanup options. At least not as of this typing. Too many question marks.

December 29, 2019 at 11:32 am #117828Who knows which version of Ozuna you’re going to get from one year to another? I don’t think they should offer him more than three years, and two years with a higher AVV would be better. If they could get Ozuna on a one year pillow deal, that would be the best, IMO.
December 29, 2019 at 11:38 am #117830I wouldn’t offer Ozuna more than two years. That way he would be coming off the books the same time as the dreadful Fowler and Carp contracts.
December 29, 2019 at 11:55 am #117833That is a good point, gscottar. About coming off the books at the same time the Fowler and Carpenter contracts are over.
But I am also worried about the next 2-4 years. We need some offense.

December 29, 2019 at 5:33 pm #117842Rangers could be in play for a righthanded-hitting OF, including stars Nick Castellanos and Marcell Ozuna. They’ve been linked to superstar 3B Nolan Arenado and Josh Donaldson but chances there aren’t necessarily great.

December 30, 2019 at 11:28 am #117897Jim Bowden has a piece in the Athletic where he predicts that Ozuna will get five years and more than $100M. If that’s the case, then it’s game over for Ozuna and the Cardinals. Might as well forget it. I’m okay with that. Let’s just see what our up and coming young outfielders can do.
December 30, 2019 at 12:40 pm #117903I absolutely cannot believe any team would give Ozuna five years and $100M or more. I’d have to see that to believe it.
December 30, 2019 at 12:49 pm #117905Bowden might, but maybe that is why is now a long-time ex-GM! 😉
He is nuts saying the Cardinals are still the top fit while he raises his estimate from 5/92.5 to 5/100. Anyone who understands the Cardinals even a little bit knows how that just would not be the case. I mean, is there a single reader here who thinks the Cards would go 5/100 for Ozuna? Anyone?
In today’s media world, it seems that attention-drawing points is more important to the masses than meaningful insight.
P.S. He adds that Ozuna would be the “difference maker” to put the Reds in the playoffs. That would make him a 10-12 WAR player in my estimation.
Here is the link.
December 30, 2019 at 1:09 pm #117907I mean, is there a single reader here who thinks the Cards would go 5/100 for Ozuna? Anyone?
Nope. I would be surprised if the Cards would do 3/45 and I hope they don’t. How Ozuna ever won a gold glove will always be one of the mysteries of the universe.
January 2, 2020 at 9:58 am #118087According to Hot Stove, this morning on the MLB Network 3 teams are pursuing Ozuna…the Reds, Rangers and Cardinals. A source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that the Reds, Rangers, and Cardinals are among the teams still making a push for the slugger, who spent the past two seasons in St. Louis. Other teams might also still be in play, but these three appear to be the frontrunners. One factor to consider when comparing is that Ozuna received a Qualifying Offer from the Cardinals, which means that any team other than St. Louis that signs him will forfeit a Draft pick. Castellanos, by virtue of being traded during the 2019 season, was ineligible for a Qualifying Offer, which could make him more appealing to some clubs concerned about giving up Draft picks.
January 2, 2020 at 10:49 am #118090I am all for giving our youngsters a chance, but even when Pham was putting up great WAR numbers, it was clear we needed more thump. After falling short by just a game recently, I wonder what the economic worth is comparing for instance Lane Thomas putting up 2.5 war and Ozuna putting up 3.5 war if we fall one game short and don’t re-sign Ozuna.
January 2, 2020 at 10:51 am #118093I hope he signs with the Rangers.
January 2, 2020 at 10:53 am #118095Ozuna’s WAR the last two years has been 2.9 and 2.2. Is that really worth a big new contract? I think not. Surely the internal candidates can match that production.

ParticipantI hope that he signs with the Reds. But Texas would be OK also.
January 2, 2020 at 10:58 am #118101I hope he signs anywhere but St. Louis.
January 2, 2020 at 11:12 am #11810614NY said, I hope that he signs with the Reds. But Texas would be OK also. Why would you want him in Cincinnati…he would hit a bunch of HRs in that bandbox.
January 2, 2020 at 11:12 am #118107I said it before … 33-34 HR’s from left field is appealing.
January 2, 2020 at 11:26 am #118109Ever the maverick around here, I am hoping Ozuna resigns with the Cardinals. The Red would be pretty much out of it with the foreigner they just signed but I am not sure of the Rangers spending ability. I doubt the Cards would go more than 3/40 for him so, despite my wishes, he may not return. If he is bullheaded about the 5/100 I heard mentioned, he will be waiting past the draft and the pick is dropped but he will never get $100 mil from anybody.
January 2, 2020 at 11:45 am #118112
stlcard25ParticipantIf it meant we would for sure be trading Fowler, then I’d be fine with Ozuna. At worst he’s a slightly above average LF bat and probably your cleanup guy. That said, I still think that O’Neill and Arozarena could outproduce him for the season, although some of that value would have to be improved defense. But I could see O’Neill hitting 25+ HRs with a full season of at bats.
