If the Angels trade Ohtani their fan base would revolt against the entire organization. They have an outstanding nucleus in Trout, Ohtani, and Rendon once they all get healthy. They just lack some pitching.

ParticipantThe angels are probably going to lose ohtani when he becomes a free agent unless they have started winning by then and I don’t see it. He’s not made a commitment to staying. So possibly lose him for nothing or get something in return. They may not trade him this year but one never knows until you try.

cardsfan64ParticipantAs we get closer to the deadline, I think back on the Cardinals tendency to not give up the farm at the trade deadline. The trade for Soto would be different since he is not just a rental, but I just can’t see them trading off the top of the farm system to get Soto and a starting pitcher or two. Any decent player we get will cost some good prospects, and I get that we won’t have room for them all in the majors at the same time. So trading some of them now makes sense.
I really think the Cards will pick up a pitcher similar to Odorizzi or Thor and a relief pitcher or two. The price will be too high for a front line pitcher and the FO won’t want to give up more than one or two from our top 10. I may be wrong, and whether they spend the prospects or not, I will still root for the Cards every day!

ParticipantSomething interesting I read is that the Nationals feel they are going to have Rule 5 problems this year to the tune of 9 prospects, so I would think they would want a good portion of what they receive in a deal to be Rule 5 exempt.

ParticipantOur top 3 priorities –
1.) Pitching
2.) Pitching
3.) PitchingAugust 1, 2022 at 8:12 am #193294Maybe Mo lets somebody else gut their organization to get Soto and then trade them a lesser package of our young guys for a quality rotation guy.
We can only hope so bling.
August 1, 2022 at 8:13 am #193295While the #Padres, #STLCards and #Dodgers remain squarely in the hunt for Juan Soto, the #Nationals are making it clear to teams with 33 hours left until the trade deadline:
Plain and simple: If no one meets their asking price, they will simply keep him for the rest of the year.— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 1, 2022
August 1, 2022 at 8:34 am #193297If I was the Nats, that is the stance I’d take, too.
I imagine the Nats have told all the teams serious about Soto exactly what they want in return. They have no reason to back down given the two years of control remaining. Soto will be just as valuable this offseason as he is now, IMO.
August 1, 2022 at 8:41 am #193300A view that Soto has frozen the trade market overall.
This year has put the dead in deadline. Last year, it was slow, too. And then there were 36 trades in the last 48 hours.
At ESPN+, a look at the fulcrum of the deadline, Juan Soto, and how the tentacles of those talks helped grind the market to a halt: https://t.co/pTH3SPVuZQ pic.twitter.com/dNX1ximsl2

August 1, 2022 at 8:43 am #193301IMO, Soto will not get more valuable in futur. His value will either stay as high as it is or go down, depending on performance and health.
August 1, 2022 at 8:47 am #193303Top Cardinals prospect Jordan Walker is the subject of minute-to-minute trade speculation, but he is keeping his focus on hitting baseballs really, really hard. https://t.co/Ga4ksxe4w1

August 1, 2022 at 9:11 am #193307Agree, BB. What you said and I said are not mutually exclusive. I do think the downside of waiting until this winter is low. The small chance that Soto suffers a career-threatening injury in the last 60 games this season if not traded is a risk I would take if I am the Nats and I did not get the offer that I want at this deadline. On the performance decline risk, given his very strong track record, I highly doubt a slump serious enough to hurt his value is coming anytime soon.
August 1, 2022 at 10:00 am #193311My thoughts on trading Walker as centerpiece of a package to get Soto is that on one hand Walker is a potential Soto and Soto is a Soto, and a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. On the other hand is the difference in years on the roster and payroll hit. There is more performance risk with Walker, but far less limitation on what else Mo can afford to do, and there is and will be more that he needs to be able to do.
August 1, 2022 at 10:10 am #193312Walker's recent power output is good to confirm what most already expected would be coming. The timing only helps if the #stlcards are actually willing to trade him. That would be a tremendously difficult call to make, I suspect.

That is how I would view it bling. If the Nats are asking for Walker, Winn, Carlson, and Liberatore for Soto then you have to ask yourself if 2 1/2 years of Soto is worth losing around 23 years of combined control of your top prospects/young players.

jj-cf-stlParticipantI like that WSH has made the asking price clear. Meet it or move on, which should help free up the market.
August 1, 2022 at 11:12 am #193316For the sake of due diligence, it should be mentioned that Walker’s numbers, including the aforementioned power surge, is happening in the Texas League.

ParticipantPlease don’t hock our future, Mo.
August 1, 2022 at 11:40 am #193319Well we need to do something because we are a wild card team at best right now. Arenado will opt out if we do nothing and next year the rockies pay us 21 million of arenados salary so sure would be nice to have him still. I think we can find a starting pitcher and catcher for what salary will come off the books with waino and molina. Cdick and pujols and couple others come off the books as well so i think we can afford to pay someone for remainder of this year and next year at least.
August 1, 2022 at 12:02 pm #193321Is Soto REALLY that good? And even if he is wonderful, is he worth the asking price for two years’ employment?
My gut tells me to give it a miss.
August 1, 2022 at 12:29 pm #193323I’ve been wondering the same thing, ‘Is Soto REALLY that good?’

August 1, 2022 at 12:48 pm #193328What in the world are the Brewers and Padres doing?

ParticipantDan was on ESPN 101 this morning and said the Cardinals are not trading Walker.
August 1, 2022 at 1:04 pm #193332Can walker play anything but 3rd base? If not i dont see many reasons to keep him unless they really want him as a DH or Arenado rest day. Unless they plan to use him for offseason trade or in case Arenado opts out. I personally think Winn is more valuable to the Cards than Walker is.
