I am glad that we did not spend the money nor deplete our farm system for one man. Does anyone know who we were offering in a possible trade or who the Nats wanted from us. All I heard was Carlson.

Cards continue to show they are fine being a WC team and getting beat in first or 2nd round of playoffs….front office is a joke.

The painful side of tearing down and rebuilding…

As an aside, I’ve seen references to at least three of these having been called “generational players”. I think that term is overused.

Harper had a good start but was never really generational overall. He has had some MVP caliber years, of course. Scherzer could be argued as a generational pitcher but Kershaw is the man of the hour for sure. Soto is in Pujols-Mantle territory at the same age. I’d call him the safest bet to match the term, but nothing is guaranteed…

Yep… being mediocre seems to be fine… waiting for walker and winn to be the next goldy and arenado and provide them with no additional help will be the same story in 3 or 4 years. They have a few hours to get something done.. we need a catcher for next year and part of this year it seems. We do need pitching but when dont we. And a good bat sure would be nice. Weve wanted and needed a good lefty bat for years but never want to get one. Oh wait i forgot about dickerson.. my bad. What a pathetic offseason and trade deadline thus far.

The current rotation is not good enough. Soto wouldn’t have changed that. They need an ace to compete with the Mets, Dodgers, Braves, Padres, even Brewers

This is what we need to do IMO.

Padres just increased their odds to win the World Series because they acquired Soto….according to the Caesar Sports book. Just curious…. What the odds were last year after the deadline when the Dodgers attained Scherzer and Turner as oppose to the Braves who attained Pederson and Rosario.

Angels spent a lot to get Ohtani; team him with Trout and eventually add Rendon. Clearly with all that money spent on talented players… surely it’s resulted in a championship? No.. okay, but they’ve at l ast made the playoffs…

My point is depleting your farm system and spending money doesn’t always equal a championship.

Our current rotation is never good enough. It is never addressed properly so may as well try to improve the offense if available. But we seem to lose many games by a run. Seems like 1 more offensive weapon could change a few of those games. We arent going to get good pitchers. We never do so trying for that good bat was sorta hopeful and needed considering we have wanted a good lefty bat since ozuna was on the team. Oh well its done and over with. Maybe we can sneak out something in the deal.

Most of the time spending money does result in a championship or at least in it with exception of a hot streaky lower team. Is that what we are hoping for? And since we dont spend money and our payroll stays the same as it pretty much has for 5 or 6 years while everyone elses seems to jump up. all we have is a farm system for leverage. We will say this crap again in 2 or 3 years when winn and walker need help and pitching is the main focus because we cannot get good pitching. Last i looked we were 3rd in the NL in runs given up.. the 2 ahead of us have 3 aces in their roation. We were 6th or 7th in runs scored in the NL. Even with our pitching hurt we have done alright. If we won half of the games weve lost by 1 wed be sitting pretty. Our catcher cant hit.. short stop cant hit.. half our outfielders cant hit.. our leadoff man cant hit.. we need another bat. Doesnt need to be soto but we have many more problems than just pitching

A bunch of guys have been DFA the last couple days. Mo’s idea of low hanging fruit.

This is what we need to do IMO.

Rodon would be a helluva pickup. He’s not on a blue light special, so don’t get excited. Mo’s MO is pretty clear after all these years.

And what is Denton talking about? Rodon a solid #3 for the Cards? He’d end up being the anchor.

    Position players –

    Goldy
    Arenado
    Carlson
    Gorman
    Edman
    DeJong
    O’Neill
    Bader
    Burleson
    Gomez
    Walker
    Winn
    Herrera

    Huge amount of talent there.

Need to get Flaherty and Matz healthy. And probably extend Quintana for a year or two.

That lineup is a great defensive lineup but im not convinced oneill bader dejong and even edman are very talented at the plate right now and maybe never again. I do want to see burleson and gomez called up soon tho. I think they both deserve a try both batting over .300 in triple A. I really dont feel like Noot (i know you didnt mention him) fits in at this level right now. I do hope TO and Dejong and find their bat again. I just feel like we are wasting prime goldy and arenado while waiting for their replacements. If walker and winn were coming up next year then id be all for it but they are 2 years away still.

Jbrodie, we are 13-13 in one run games. Another star bat would maybe give us 2-5 more wins. 5 more wins would put us ahead of the Brewers but we would still have the 4th best record in the NL.

Speaking of best record in the NL, the Dodgers are 8-9 in one-run games. What conclusion can be drawn from all that?

The question is if we trade future wins (brought by, say, Walker) for current (from Soto). Hard to know what the cost in future wins would be, especially without knowing what the Nats would have asked. So party of the disagreement is likely over that. I’d like 6 years of Walker, with some at fairly low price, quite a bit.

Do we know that Walker is two years away? At age 20, Albert had only 3 games above the A+ level. At age 20 this year, Walker has 80 games at AA. Obviously Albert was a unique talent. But I’d think a AA guy with a .905 OPS would have a pretty legit shot at spending part, perhaps most, of next year in the big leagues.

Gags, you bring to my mind a glimpse into next year. If Walker has a great spring training, like Pujols did in 2001, he could force his way onto the team.

Walker and Winn could very well arrive in St. Louis toward the middle or latter part of the 2023 season.
