Does anyone consider that forcing the roster to grind out wins and claw for respect is part of the business model? In the current playoff format, those teams seem to win most often.
August 2, 2022 at 1:59 pm #193616Are they really looking to block Yepez, Albert, and Dickerson? The talent necessary to acquire a bat good enough to block them is cost prohibitive.
Are they really going to block Yadi upon his return?
I think they are (and should be) done.August 2, 2022 at 2:08 pm #193618Forsch… that is just 1 run games too.. in given games where a soto type player were to have 2 or 3 rbis and that was the difference is greater… one ace in our rotation would be huge but isnt going to be enough either and i wasnt going to be happy with just a soto move. We need runs and we need to give up less runs obviously but again aside from the dodgers and mets.. our defense and pitcher has given up less runs than the rest of the NL. Weve been in 26 1 run games and even quite a few shutouts. Even games where our pitcher has gone deep into games and held their own just to lose 1-0 in the 9th against a subpar 4.0 era pitcher we should have crushed. I dont disagree with anyone about needing good pitching.. we do.. but if we arent going to get it at least get another bat. Mo should be trying to get contreras or murphy along with a pitcher but i doubt it. We are gonna need a catcher and preferrably one who bats above .200. We have too many sub .220 hitters right now.
August 2, 2022 at 2:20 pm #193621The Nats' prospect haul for Juan Soto and Josh Bell might be the biggest I've ever seen. My breakdown of the trade is here for @TheAthletic subscribers: https://t.co/SgBzqdiydP

August 2, 2022 at 2:36 pm #193622Liberatore, Winn, Burleson, Baez, and Hence would have been comparable and still falls just short of what the Padres gave up. We would have to have added Walker instead of Baez, and that is way too rich to make sense.

August 2, 2022 at 2:40 pm #193625Luke Voit to the Nationals instead of Hosmer.
August 2, 2022 at 2:46 pm #193626He might kill Hosmer
August 2, 2022 at 2:48 pm #193627Bccran they had 3 over .300 and another 3 more over .275… we have 1 over .300 and 1 over .275… and then it drops severely… far better hitting team and yes better pitching… would be nice to improve on one side at least
August 2, 2022 at 2:56 pm #193631One possibility with Hosmer-Red Sox deal: Inclusion by Padres of a decent prospect (or two) so that Sox take on more of Hosmer’s financial obligation. Deal not yet official; exact terms not known.

August 2, 2022 at 3:07 pm #193638Interesting that Bowden is praising his two former teams for carrying out their fire sales well…
The #Nationals and #Reds have done as good a job in "Selling" at at trade deadline as we've ever seen in the modern era.

August 2, 2022 at 3:31 pm #193650Bell gets to finally play on a winning club. He has probably played in more losing games than just about any active player.
August 2, 2022 at 3:37 pm #193651Rodon, Mahle, Castillo and Lopez would be pitchers at the top of my list. Snell, Montas and Syndergard would be in the next tier. Obviously, several of those have been traded. I wonder what Snell may cost if the Cardinals took on all the salary.
August 2, 2022 at 3:43 pm #193653Quintana and that’s all the Redbirds are going to do.
Goodbye Arenado………
August 2, 2022 at 4:04 pm #193658I was fine not getting Soto. But teams aren’t built at the deadline but they can sure fail at it and that’s what the Cardinals seem to have done. They failed in the offseason and they compounded it at the deadline. It was a waste to even bother with the two players they picked up as neither will move the needle on this season. Still time to do business but not sure what they can or should do now. Probably nothing which they have mastered.
Should the Cardinals have considered selling some assets for future capital?
August 2, 2022 at 4:17 pm #193662Quintana and that’s all the Redbirds are going to do.
Goodbye Arenado………
I doubt if Arenado is leaving but if he does we have Gorman and Walker for 3B. We will be fine.
August 2, 2022 at 4:18 pm #193663It’s getting down to crunch time boys.
Everybody ready?
I wish I could let everybody know what I already know but I’ve been told to keep things quiet.
Stay tuned……

August 2, 2022 at 4:19 pm #193664Arenado isn’t going anywhere.
August 2, 2022 at 4:21 pm #193665Rats:
I’ve wondered about that all along. Arenado wanted to play on a winning team but if he wanted to win a ring he is on the wrong team.
August 2, 2022 at 4:24 pm #193667bccran
ParticipantIf players get healthy and everyone clicks on this team, they have a chance at a ring.
August 2, 2022 at 4:25 pm #193668Yes, bcc
August 2, 2022 at 4:51 pm #193674I agree with bccran, also.
I’m glad this Soto sweepstakes is over. All this hyperventilating over a player who hasn’t stood the test of time and whose defense is below average, was getting way out of hand.
With all of the trades that A.J. Preller has made, and all the money he has spent, the Padres better win something very soon, or Preller will find himself looking for work.
August 2, 2022 at 4:51 pm #193675gscott lol saying we will be fine if Arenado leaves is comical as can be…
August 2, 2022 at 4:54 pm #193678I am not saying I want him to leave and I don’t expect him to leave. But if he does we plug Gorman/Walker into 3B and spend Arenado’s $30M per year on pitching.
August 2, 2022 at 5:49 pm #193733Arenado won’t risk the deal he has in place by opting out. There are not too many places to go that have a tradition of winning most very year. He could possibly get a nice offer from the Mets or Giants, but just as easily could be wooed by the Red Sox or Angels. And the Giants are not exactly tearing it up this year. The grass ain’t always greener.
