September 30, 2017 at 9:35 am #34697Toronto wants more speed and athletic ability for their team.Trade Tommy Pham,Nick Martini for Donaldson.See if that interests Toronto. If not then add Gyorko if they put in a useable bullpen guy.

ParticipantHow many times over the years have we had these lengthy discussions about a player (with proposed trade ideas) only to see him stay where he is or be scooped up by another team. Most of the Cards moves have been unexpected. May not be as much fun, but probably best to anticipate the unexpected again.
September 30, 2017 at 10:15 am #34706Yeah the Brandon Moss trade was unexpected and did nothing for us. Completely underwhelmed.
September 30, 2017 at 3:21 pm #34740I will be shocked if they do anything big this off season or take on significant money.
September 30, 2017 at 5:06 pm #34746TC, that assumes they are comfortable with the current course and are not worried about fan unrest affecting the bottom line in 2018. I expect we will soon be serenaded with reports of great attendance at Busch this year, but my sense is that ticket discounting was heavier than before. We will also soon see how badly the TV ratings dropped. With the team owning 30% of FSM in the new deal, both revenue sources (tickets and ratings) impact them directly.
September 30, 2017 at 8:11 pm #34753BW I hope they do what should have been done last off season. I pray i am wrong. I just don’t see a desire from this leadership group to take on the significant level money which a true star will cost. They seem content to go with their young guys (I’m fine with that to an extent) and add a vet here or there that is a notch or two or three below elite. We have had this same discussion the past two or three off seasons and I’m firmly in show me mode at this point. It’s time to use some of that powder. If they make a big move or two great and if not it will be much of the same this time next year.
BTW don’t they have all of that tv money kicking in this year? If so they can take an attendance hit and still make their money.

ParticipantRest easy. The Cards feel that a change has to be made in leadership, either in management and coaches or with the player group.
They have determined that the manager and coaches deserve a least one more year, so they are going after player leadership from the outside.September 30, 2017 at 9:27 pm #34759It is the rare player who can come in from the outside and immediately establish themselves as a team leader. It would seem even more difficult with entrenched leaders such as Yadi and Wainwright here and not going anywhere.
In other words, if that is what the team thinks is going to turn this team around, I think they are on the wrong path.

ParticipantThere are players out there who if brought in could provide leadership based upon their outstanding MLB performance. Also, some players simply are gifted with leadership qualities. Some are not. The Cards are looking for proven leaders.
September 30, 2017 at 10:23 pm #34763Wont matter who they bring in with MM still destroying the bullpens he is given and not knowing when to yank the starting pitcher and refusing to make the infield work on defense and hold players accountable for poor base running.
September 30, 2017 at 10:27 pm #34764Good luck finding those proven leaders in trades or in FA.

ParticipantMy guess is Hosmer or Moustakas.
October 1, 2017 at 9:16 am #34780Bccran I’ve like Hosmer as a target most of this year. I think he would be an excellent pick up. But that can’t be the only thing they do. They need a starter, at least 2 relievers, and probably another big MOTB to be competitive within the division much less the league. This roster needs remaking in a major way.

ParticipantI don’t think they feel they need more than one big bat, but it may happen. Expect Carp and Piscotty to be trade chips, and a strong effort to sign one of the Royals FAs.
October 1, 2017 at 11:24 am #34795Since Carpenter is arguably their biggest bat now, if they trade him, I could definitely argue they need to bring in a second hitter. Otherwise, the only net gain to the offense would be the difference between New Guy and Carpenter – probably not enough to make a huge impact.
October 1, 2017 at 12:02 pm #34797I agree with both of you…. I have this feeling they’re going after hosmer and donaldson… Then dealing carpenter for another player. Maybe stanton. Maybe a pitcher. Not sure.
October 1, 2017 at 2:29 pm #34803I just saw something on Yahoo Sports where Donaldson said he prefers to remain a BlueJay. He would be my 3rd choice behind Stanton and JD Martinez as far as a big bat goes. After all, I think Gyorko is adequate at 3rdbase. He’s just not adequate as a cleanup hitter.

ParticipantNo wonder this team is mediocre. Carp is your best hitter. wow
October 1, 2017 at 2:50 pm #34809bccran
ParticipantI truly think Carpenter will be gone.
October 1, 2017 at 4:45 pm #34816Statistically, Moustakas is not better than Gyrko and Hosmer is no better than Carpenter. Other than changing team chemistry and upping payroll, what else is gained by either of those signings?
October 1, 2017 at 4:53 pm #34818bccran
ParticipantThe Cards front office thinks they need to change the makeup. The leaders haven’t led and the youngsters haven’t produced. Not a good combination. The going expression is that the organization has so much depth they could easily field 2 .500 teams.
October 1, 2017 at 5:01 pm #34819Please no. We only need one .500 team at a time. I don’t think I could stand another one.

ParticipantHosmer is 4 years younger than Carp if upping payroll is the only concern I will take the younger guy. Carp also is an old 31 he looks like he can breakdown anytime now.
