Yes, the shoulder and knee should be significant concerns. I really want to like this move, but feel a cloud might be hanging over with Mo’s track record in acquiring relievers in recent years. Hopefully the Cards are fortunate this time on the upside. If so, Miller makes a huge difference.

Knee issues generally cause your body to compensate in other ways. His body compensating could have caused the shoulder impingement, as he could have adjusted his delivery ever so slightly to deal with the pain while going through a pitch.

Signing Miller is definitely risky but could provide a tremendous return also. He was the best reliever in the game in 2016. If we can get anywhere close to that form then it is a great signing.
Goold also mentioned that the Cards inquired about Brad Hand. Wow that would have been the dream LHreliever for me but I guess the asking price was too high.

I’d be for signing or trading for another high quality bullpen arm. Kluber would be great, but I suspect we would lose 2 of Flaherty, Reyes, Gorman, Montero to get him and mid 30s starters are risky. I’d be more interested in Bauer as I think you at least get elite results for your outlay. Kluber could be elite or could be above average.
Still would like to see a trade for Smith or Rogers if there’s a way to make it happen. Jmart and a MiLB pitcher or Gant/Ponce/Gomber and a MiLB OF’er.
The FO said they would tweek their model to allow for more risk. We were fore-warned. Seems the FO is giving it the gas. I applaud the effort regardless of the results.

The newest addition to the 40-man, RHR Ryan Meisinger, gets bumped off. Since he made it through waivers all the way to St. Louis last time, my guess is that he will clear, but if not, nothing lost.
Worst part – NTC
On a 2 year deal, I don’t see it as that big a deal. If he’s fantastic, or at least good, and the team is good, he won’t be traded. If he’s good and the team stinks, he’s shown a willingness to play for a winner so I’d assume he’d waive the NTC. The only real risk is if you think he goes full Holland or gets hurt. In that case, you decline the option after 2020 and cut your losses.

Wouldn’t Gomber or Cabrerra actually be very close to whoever we could trade for? Gomber has the big breaking pitch, and his fastball spiked up when he pitched in relief.
I want Harper, but a dramatically improved Fowler, a healthy Reyes, a healthy Wacha, a healthy DeJong, an improved bat from Wong, plus the two big adds make us seem more than a couple wins better.
Too bad we have so many question marks. It makes it tough to stand pat when we may already be standing on the peak. The fog could easily result in a fall with each step we take from here on out.
I do not see how anyone could honestly think an NTC has anything to do a player’s performance or the ability to trade him if necessary. Looks to me like some are using this signing to try to get in other digs that have nothing to do with Miller.
Cecil and Fowler cannot be traded because they have almost no value relative to the money remaining on their contracts. Period.

SSS maybe, but Gomber wasn’t great in relief last year. Maybe Cabrera could be, but he should be a starter for 2019 unless there is no other choice, IMO.
Adding another top notch arm has a low chance of being a total disaster, IMO. And decluttering the upper levels might be a healthy thing for the system as a whole.
A lot of pitchers will be coming into camp with their jobs on the line. Miller just moved the others all down one step.
Yeah a NTC only hurts if we are rebuilding and I don’t see any chance of that happening. We are generally on the lookout for relievers.
Even after the Miller signing I have the Cardinals payroll at about $161M. Still plenty of room for further additions if we really want to put the gas pedal down. I’m not advocating for Harper but another solid bullpen piece then an elite rotation piece like Kluber or Syndergaard might make us favorites to win the NL.
Adding Miller is a sign that CMartinez, Hudson and Reyes will stay as starters. (Reyes and Hudson at Memphis in April). I still count 7 SPs for the Cards + 11 in the bullpen, even with Meisinger gone.
