When the Cards traded Enos Slaughter my Dad Swore he would never drink another bottle of Budweiser beer as long as he lived. And to the best of my knowledge he never did. Dad always thought retiring Slaughter’s number was a bit of a two-faced move. We both appreciated Wally Moon, but he weren’t no Slaughter.
I agree that clubs have got carried away with the number retiring business these days.April 4, 2018 at 5:13 pm #47459Of course, I don’t know what he thinks about while sleeping. But has has mentioned it periodically while awake. π
What you want him to do and what he wants to do may not necessarily be the same.
April 4, 2018 at 5:15 pm #47460Rosenthal, Feb. 15, 2017:
“Coming up as a starter, I just really loved the routine of it. I loved that competition of pitching deep into the game.”

April 4, 2018 at 5:25 pm #47462CIF, I don’t know if your Dad is still with us, but if he is, tell him to take it out on the beer, but not the team. The decision to trade Slaughter surely had to be approved by Gussie Busch, but he had long since passed away and team had already been sold by the time the Slaughter number retirement decision was made in 1996. The new ownership group did it as part of recognizing the 50 year anniversary of the 1946 team.
April 4, 2018 at 5:36 pm #47465Prior to the current ownership group, over the entire history of the team, seven numbers were retired. That included the questionable ones for Boyer and Gussie.
The DeWitt group has since doubled the total to 14.
One root problem, in my opinion, is not having a team Hall of Fame until very recently. With nothing else to enable recognition, they made some number retirement decisions I would not have made. (As a point of reference, the Reds Hall of Fame is currently celebrating its 60th year in existence.)
I will stop here as this is a long-standing issue with me and many have read my grumbling before.
April 4, 2018 at 5:43 pm #47467Despite his anger, Dad remained a Cardinals man until he drew his final breath. He probably didn’t put much of a dent in Busch’s wallet but it made him feel better anyway.
April 4, 2018 at 5:49 pm #47468On the positive side, the Cardinals have announced a Saturday autograph series to get fans into the Museum. Great idea.

April 4, 2018 at 6:28 pm #47472Brian, back to Rosenthal. The report was a minor league salary far inferior to the league minimum thus it obviously wasnt a major league deal and no service time would be accrued unless and until added to the major league roster.
April 4, 2018 at 6:52 pm #47475Your use of “major league roster” is too generic. Do you mean 40-man or 25-man? Split contracts such as this one can be for 40-man players, but they don’t have to be. 40-man players accrue service time. Also, your comment suggests you think every 40-man player makes MLB minimum salary. That is not the case.
From the detail included in the erroneous tweet, it is impossible to tell if this deal included a 40-man spot or not. However, if not, I believe there is no way Rosenthal would have entertained it – unless you think $90K would matter to him. I certainly don’t. The value to him would seem to be service time accrual.
April 4, 2018 at 7:16 pm #4747640 man players accrue service time? Major league service time? (The issue here)
Ok, I am not as informed as I thought. Kelly is acrueing major league svc time in Memphis?
April 4, 2018 at 7:27 pm #47478Yes, 40-man roster players on the MLB 60-day DL do accrue MLB service time. See Alex Reyes last season as an example.
Carson Kelly is not injured, not on a DL and therefore irrelevant to this discussion.
April 4, 2018 at 8:00 pm #47483Who mentioned DL? No one I saw mentioned it in this post. Obviously if there is a minor league salary involved, it is a minor league deal. Even if the minors time was on the 60 day DL he would get major league pay.
April 4, 2018 at 8:23 pm #47495I mentioned 60-day DL in my very first post on the previous page. But you do raise a good point. If he is on MLB 60-day DL, could they pay minor league salary? It would seem not. Then I am back to your first point. The deal would make no sense for Rosenthal. I do find it very odd, though, that Nightengale’s original post was highly specific on the terms. I wonder what really happened.
April 5, 2018 at 10:03 am #47547Nightengale also alluded to the fact that the Cardinals had offered Rosenthal similar terms as the Marlins did. Who knows if that is true or not considering how his entire tweet blew up in his face but if it is true then perhaps the Cards will pursue bringing Rosey back next year to team up with Hicks at the back of the bullpen. You would have to think Holland will be a one and done deal unless he is very productive and willing to sign another one year deal next year.
April 5, 2018 at 10:11 am #47554Certainly not out of the question, though as I said before, I bet Rosenthal is going to be looking for a chance to start somewhere. That isn’t going to be St. Louis. But if he wants to keep closing, then yes, the Cards could be a candidate. Of course, one of the younger arms could step up in the interim and become the next closer instead. Surely the Cards would rather source in-house if they can.

ParticipantWhat I remember about Rosenthal was that he wasn’t all that elite as a starting pitching prospect (much like Hicks) but was very much discussed due to his stuff.
In 2011, he was already 21 pitching at Quad Cities and threw well, but when he skipped A+ to go to AA, his K-rate dropped and his BB-rate went up. Shelby Miller had a similar jump the year before, but was younger and already ahead of Rosenthal at that point. Plus we didn’t really need any starters.
April 5, 2018 at 10:29 am #47564Perhaps he improved his secondary offerings in the last five years. Or maybe not. Either way, I think it is unlikely he will be back. But surely not impossible.
April 5, 2018 at 11:48 am #47568I dont see anyone giving Rosenthal much money to start. That would be risky if he was healthy. Coming off of injury it would be ecponentially riskier. He is probably looking at an incentive laden already, as a starter even more so.
April 5, 2018 at 1:38 pm #47586Tommy John is not considered that risky in today’s game. Further, by this time next year, Rosenthal will be at 19-20 months post-surgery. The timing is not unlike Lance Lynn last year, who with a similarly-long rehab time, went on to make 33 starts and throw 186 innings in his first year back.
My bet is that once Rosenthal throws in the fall and shows he is fine, then he will not have trouble finding a deal to his liking. What team wouldn’t want an arm like his at the relatively young age of 28 – and with no draft pick loss attached? Whether he wants to start or relieve is not known.
P.S. However, we are talking about Boras, so then again, maybe Rosenthal won’t sign too quickly. π
April 5, 2018 at 2:37 pm #47588The #Braves today outrighted RHP Miguel Socolovich to Triple-A Gwinnett and he accepted the assignment.

April 5, 2018 at 4:04 pm #47606Matt Holliday is currently working as an MLB Radio talk show host. I heard him today on Inside Pitch.
April 6, 2018 at 10:18 am #47694Kevin Siegrist was suspended by the Pirates for not reporting to Triple A. He has a June 1 opt out so I guess he can just sit around until then and become a free agent.
April 6, 2018 at 1:36 pm #47718Waiting would only make sense if Siegrist thinks he can get an MLB deal at that point – which seems questionable. He is probably hoping the Pirates release him sooner, but maybe they won’t, just to punish him.
April 6, 2018 at 1:54 pm #47721What’s weird is he is the one who agreed to the caveat in the contract. Had he not had that little caveat he could have gotten his release immediately.
April 6, 2018 at 2:02 pm #47723He probably fired his agent. π
