Well Woodford didn’t have to wait long to find a home. Pittsburgh is signing him to a minor league deal.
Based off Woodford’s performance so far it looks to be a wise decision not to pay him arb money.
DeJong is actually having a very respectable season for the White Sox. He has 12 HR’s and an OPS of .760. Both of those would rank pretty high on our stat chart right now.
The White Sox are probably the best place for him right now. Dejong still has it physically, but you could see mentally he wasn’t there and lacked confidence. There isn’t any pressure for the White Sox to make the playoffs as expectations are so low.
The Cardinals are often beat up due to former players succeeding elsewhere both rightfully and wrongfully. Here’s a snapshot of how everyone out there who I could think to look up is doing. I put an asterisk next to those who we were going to lose anyway because of free agency.

Yes Edmundo Sosa is having a good year for the Phillies but I think the Cardinals are happy with that trade anyway because of Jo Jo.
Here’s a baseball oddity. Tyler O’Neill, Brendan Donovan, Nolan Gorman, Paul Goldschmidt, Alec Burleson, Nolan Arenado, and Masyn Winn are all within a couple of total bases of each other, around 100 each. In the case of O’Neill it is far more impressive as he has done it in far fewer at-bats and he has more walks, and therefore a far higher OPS.
It still boggles my mind that the Cards basically gave away a .900 OPS hitter. But, they don’t have do overs in MLB trades. I’d say a couple of those guys mentioned above need to pick it up a notch or two for us to to climb over the stubborn .500 win/loss level.

If he had OPSed .900 more than once in six years for us he wouldn’t have got traded.

One of those good deals for both teams. I really liked Sosa and lobbied for him to play full time over DeJong, but management gave DeJong the guaranteed money and played him despite it not being the best lineup they could have put out there.
One frustration with the Cardinals is they play will play bad contracts over better players. You would think the best players would end up returning more in revenue due to better team results, and that the bad contract is sunk cost you are going to have to pay anyway. But management does not see it that way.
Different organizations have different strengths. The Orioles have a great farm system, the Dodgers are good at signing big fat checks, and the Cards have lately had some success with the free agent market.

Actually the Dodgers sign big checks AND have a great farm system. Win win for them.
Not really in the news-but kind of. Liberatore’s performance last night made me wonder how Aroz was doing. I have to say that I wasn’t unhappy to see he’s struggling. Hes 29 and Lib is only 24. Still a chance for this to be a win for the good guys. Plus I didn’t enjoy getting it rubbed in our face by everybody. I had an idea he might have cratered since I hadn’t been hearing about him. Enjoy.
Not sure why Randy is struggling so much this year. He has been a prime name that comes up in guys likely to be dealt at the trade deadline.
Monty is having a rough year in the desert.
Rough afternoon for Jordan Montgomery, whose day is finished after 2.2 innings and 84 pitches, while serenaded by boos.
He gives up 9 hits and 8 runs (4 earned runs) with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
He has a 6.03 ERA for the season.

Turns out Boras misread the market on Montgomery and he missed Spring Training as a consequence. Monty later fired Boras. I think he will come back strong next year once he has a full season to get ready and get into a routine.
Pitchers are such a high risk commodity that you are not going to see teams overly commit to them, unless you are the Dodgers and have more money than God.

There was an article out here analyzing the Arenado trade. The Rox have gotten about 1 WAR out of the players received in the deal, with Gomber the only one remaining in the organization. We have gotten what, 15 WAR or so to date from Nado. Plus the Rox pony up $5M per year on the deal. That is quite a fleecing.
Yeah I would say we clearly won both the Arenado and Goldy trades. Sure both aren’t playing how they were in years past, but they had a few very good years where they easily earned their contracts.
The excess value of the Goldy and Arenado trades is offset by the loss taken in the Ozuna trade. We got 4 or 5 WAR out of him and have lost 35 or 38 or so I believe, and that is so far.
Winning a trade isn’t as important as getting the production you expected. Goldy and Arenado gave us one great year together but both have stunk in the postseason.
This year we are paying a combined $53M for them and have received a combined 1.1 WAR thus far. No bueno.
