Jeremy Hazelbaker has been DFAed by Arizona. That is how he joined them, via a waiver claim from the Cardinals after being DFAed about 18 months ago.

And to think that Piscotty and Grichuk were once figured to be mainstays of the Cardinal outfield. Yikes.

Bruce Caldwell signed with the Yankees and reported to Double-A Trenton.

Piscotty has really never been the same since that game last April when the cubbies conked him with fastballs 3 times in the same game. The most detrimental one being the Junior Baez throw home from right that nailed him on the noggin. I believe that nasty outfield collision with Bourjos a few years ago is what first started messing with his head….mentally. The man has way TOO much talent to be playing as poorly as he has these days.

Good to see Kozma still playing professional ball. Had Cardinal management done the right thing and drafted Porcello with that pick, he might be thought of almost in the same class as Wainwright today, had he stayed a Cardinal all this time. Still though, at least Pete is carving out a decent career in pro ball. Not too many people can say they have done that.

One thing is for sure, Kozma will forever be hated in Washington.

I always liked Kozma. I know the game has changed but I still think defense is more important than offense at the SS position and he was very good defensively. We went to a World Series with him as a starter. He was kind of like Brendan Ryan without the goofy attitude.

As for Piscotty, I hate to see how his career has downturned. It is almost similar to Allen Craig. It is unfortunate because by all accounts Piscotty is a top notch guy. We all know he has had to deal with a lot of family stress so I hope things turn around for him. Trading him close to his family was one of the better things this front office has ever done. I know it wasn’t just a charity move since we got a couple of pretty good players back but it was still a classy move.

Here is a cool story. Last night, I saw this tweet about Twins replay coordinator Corey Baker receiving kudos from the manager for his help on a crucial play. The source, beat writer Mike Berardino, is a friend. So I sent him the link to former Cardinals minor league pitcher Corey Baker’s MiLB.com page on the longshot that it is the same person – and it is! It looks like the next phase of Baker’s baseball career is going well.

    This seems familiar…
FWIW, he did not have a good spring, either.

Breyvic Valera has been called up by the Dodgers. Justin Turner is on the DL and now Logan Forsythe is on the DL.

Trading Diaz was not a smart move. I still don’t understand why they felt the need to do it.

Are you a tad worried about SS depth or DeJong?

I don’t like the defense at SS either if DeJong is out for an extended period but we do have a couple of in-house options who could be relied on in a pinch or timeshare. Defense sometimes be damned in some instances.

if they knew the eventual moves for Yairo and Schrock were coming (ie a deal with Piscotty to Oakland was always “close”) then it makes more sense…but that seems a stretch

i agree i dont see why they moved on that deal so fast…for what we got back i think we could have gotten the same even after getting Munoz

but alas we have Munoz and Garcia as backup SS’s with Meija and Tovar hanging around to help too…seems like we are just trying to stay a float with SS depth until Sosa is ready

now that Mercado is entrenched as an OFer…and hitting…would there be any chance of getting him some reps at SS?

If i remember right he wasnt great at SS…but i wonder with his maturity and raised level of play if he’d be better now with some more instruction

he woudl have some serious value to the MLB team right now if he could also play SS…his legs alone almost make him a worthwhile case…but add in CF and SS with a little pop and good contact…picture perfect bench guy…being 2nd OFer and backup SS…or at least serviceable SS in case of late game switches

I am starting to doubt that Sosa will be the answer. His progress is slow and his bat is not what we were expecting. If DeJong can’t be relied upon at SS going forward, its Edman or Robertson on the horizon. Waiting for DPerez will be longer than most thought.

If the Cards can’t see DeJong at SS… they’ll have acquire someone. No, not Machado, but someone near the top of MLB’s SSs.

My feelings are going to be biased because Diaz was my favorite player on the Cardinals. However, I also don’t like just giving away good players. Ottavino was in the same category.

I understand losing some guys like Cordoba in the rule 5 or Lucas due to 40-man issues, but if Diaz had rebounded in the spring and lit it up in Memphis, then he could have gotten a better return than Woodman. I mean, the return we got for Brevic Valera was better than that for Aledmys Diaz. What?
