Maybe the new bet should be whether it happens to Albert or Molina first. I forgot the details of our other bet. It had something to do with Holliday’s OPS maybe? I imagine if you had won, you would have pestered me about it before now. Or maybe you did, and I tuned it out. 😉
There is likely no proof, anyway, since CBS/247/Scout nuked our old board, and while the TCN blog articles all remain active back to 2009, I shut off the reader comments that followed posts when this board went live. Too much potential confusion with people potentially commenting in two different places.
That reminds me, I still have the link to the TCNB Musial #19 project but when I click on it the article or thread, or whatever it was, it appears for a moment and then flips to this site. I have also tried the link at the bottom of your SABR article from a few years ago but same result. It was truly epic, how can I access it?
The old links changed when “blog” was removed from the URL last summer. There is a very good search facility here on the new site for articles, old and new. It is accessible at the far upper right where there is a blue magnifying glass. (There is a separate forum search, which also is very helpful. It can be found from the FORUMS page, linked on the top menu bar. The FORUMS page also lists the two forums to choose from.)

I dont understand this move by Boras/Rosenthal. He gives up FA leverage if Marlins add him to the roster (assuming he is in the minors for more than +/- 70 days.) He would have been better off to rehab and then showcase over the Winter as a FA.
If Rosenthal is added to the 40-man and placed on the 60-day DL, then he accrues enough service time to become a free agent this fall. This way, if he gets back briefly at the end of the year and pitches well, he only improves his value this coming winter. That is most likely Boras’ plan, and if so, is a good one, IMO.
This is what I thought would happen all along. Since Rosenthal has 5.058 service time, he needed to sign an MLB deal somewhere before May was over, but it did not have to be before spring training.
This may or may not be a done deal.

Great article on the Musial number 19 mystery, Brian. It reminded me of the Mantle situation, where Mick wore number 6 during his 1951 partial season rather than the famous number 7 he wore thereafter.
Speaking of number 7, I am still puzzled why the Cardinals have never retired that number in honor of Ducky Medwick. I thought perhaps after Holliday was no longer with the team, that they would finally retire the number, but see that Luke Weaver is now wearing it.
They seem to have retired all of the numbers worn by prominent Cardinal HOFers except 7.
Recency bias is my guess. The only numbers to be retired under the current ownership were ones worn by those players/managers in more recent times – guys who fans recognize and can wear red jackets. What percentage of the current fan base truly appreciate what Medwick accomplished?
My personal opinion is that the Cards have (more than) enough retired numbers – especially considering #4 and #5 will be coming up before we know it.

I agree on the retired numbers, as far as their being too many. I don’t think they should retire manager numbers.
Still I think of Medwick in a similar way as Slaughter, and they retired his number 9. I always thought of 9 as Maris, Torre or Pendleton, but then somewhere along the line the club stopped issuing it and retired it for Slaughter. If they are going to do that for Slaughter, I would think they would for Medwick.
But again, I also think the retired numbers are too plentiful. After Stan, Red, and Gibby, I am not sure any others should be retired other than number 5 at some point.
I get your point, but Enos’ number was retired over two decades ago when he was still alive to fully appreciate it. Medwick had already been dead for over 20 years by then, so it is has been over 40 now.
You count Pujols as a given, but not Molina. I fear the Cardinals will rush and retire Molina’s right away based on emotion, which I would strongly disagree with. Cooperstown has a five-year waiting period for good reason. Once done, they can never be undone.
Do you think Rosenthal would give up his dream of starting when he finally gets a chance to make that a negotiating contingency as a free agent? It would surprise me, as he has been waiting a long time.
