Not a great difference maker had Carpenter batted up to .224, but Randy hitting just .216 would have been a big deal.

Interesting, and that might bode well for Carp to get a shot somewhere next year.
On the other hand, I wonder what the methodology is for this metric. Watching Carp, he would hit the ball hard quite often, but he seemed to consistently hit it between first and second. He was easy to defend. He did have several shots to the outfield that were run down.
But in conclusion, does this metric tend to overly minimize hitting the ball to all fields, and overly optimize players who tend to hit the ball in the same area more often?
Here is the definition of xBA. It is unclear to me if an individual player’s hitting approach and shifting against him is taken into account.

Carp may have been unlucky at times but I believe that his approach and the fact he’s older are the biggest factors for him not hitting.

I could see Gant dominating over there and then coming back in a few years. He certainly had more success than the usual type that goes overseas. I wonder if we will see more of those middle of the road types moving this off-season rather than the typical “last chance” guys (Mikolas, Nick Martinez)?

It sure seems that way. A number of MLB players have signed deals with Korean and Japanese teams already this offseason. No doubt it is from the lockout.
I am sure the union does not like guys deflecting to the Asian leagues. But a lot of guys no doubt want to make sure they have paychecks coming next year, and hope that in the long run they can build value and come back here once things are fully operational.

Well Freeman may not be there so they may need a first baseman. I think freeman should walk. The team has benefited from paying him less. All he is asking for in return is some security of extra years. If freeman was showing signs of decline I might understand but haven’t really seen it.
