Also, I had an idea while hiking yesterday and I ran it by Brian…I think we may be able to do something with these teams after all!

Long story short, continue drafting but at the end I think I’ve got a good system to add some fun to the mix, and will post how we will run that (including dates) at the end of the draft. It won’t be an active fantasy game so don’t worry about trying to figure out anything beyond drafting the best team. I will give this one basic rule: draft as though your team is going to be playing a best of 3 game series.

BikeMike, I have a list of who I want. I wish I could just pick 5 guys right now and fill in the remainders from what’s left over.

This has been a fun learning experience. I have followed the Cardinals since the early ’70s and know a lot of the names. I had never actually went and researched the players to learn more about the history of the team. I talked to many people over the years who followed the team since the ’40s and heard a few stories about the players they remembered from their youth. These are the names that I had to learn a little more about.

The thing that I have found most intriguing is the way fielding has evolved. I understand improved fields and gloves, but I would think errors would be across all eras awarded on the simple premise of, “He should have had that one.” That concept would be reflective of each eras eye test. Still, errors were far more abundant in the past infielders up the middle. It really magnified Ozzie’s greatness.

My pick is an 8x all star, 2 time World Series champ including a ring with the Cardinals, won an MVP and had a terrific 7 WAR season as a Cardinal. One of my favorites as a young kid. I still have the Hartland statue I picked out while the family was vacationing back in 1963, and we took a break to shop at a GEM store, which was an early day type of Wal-Mart. My dad let me get it and I was thrilled. Turns out of the 18 original Hartland baseball statues produced in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, his is the rarest and most expensive today, commanding well into the 4 figure amount in good condition.

Probably a better basketball player than baseball, and for many years was the reigning scoring leader for Duke University. He had a long second career as the color analyst on Pitt Panthers basketball broadcasts, retiring only a couple years ago.

flood21 hit it out of the park with those back to back gems. Eck would never had made it back to me. but that was the dream. Palanco was by far the best 2B available but was also the best value when considering the drop after him.
Tenace was a sneaky pick at catcher. Over 40 war and over 200 homers are significant.

I originally wanted Torre at catcher and decided on Tenace a few rounds ago. Finally got gunshy I’d lose him too and made the pick.

My only question is, when will jj-cf-stl pick JJ to be his CF?

Sorry I messed up your plan to get Torre as your catcher, jj. But my plan was to take Boyer at that spot, and he was taken one slot above my pick so my plan was foiled as well. I went with Torre as my backup plan. Had considered Richie “Dick” Allen for third, and maybe you could have gotten Joe had I chose Dick. But I decided on Torre somewhat based on his fabulous 1971 season as a Cardinal. I know we are not picking a specific season, but that year was so awesome it swayed me to go with the Brooklyn native.

When I chose Boyer, your ID “pic”, I thought it was fitting I lost Torre.
That was just the second round when it became a reality of building the best roster you can, instead of the one you envisioned.

Jon Jay may not get a roster spot. Sentiment only applies to the elite!

This is starting to get hard. I think this time I will have to go for a third baseman who overcame a childhood injury to be one of the best third basemen of the ’40s. Despite having a shorter right arm, he was a good hitter who amassed a lifetime 125 OPS+. He suffered through arm problems throughout his career and only played in the majors for 9 seasons but still had 24.8 WAR over his career. A 4 time all-star, he was in the top ten for the MVP twice and 3 other times received votes for the MVP.

Roger Maris is one of my all-time favorite players and I was hoping to get him as a bench guy, but am not surprised he was taken. I still remember as a kid us getting him in the deal with the Yankees, and being elated. My parents were out that evening and when I heard the garage door go up I rushed into the garage and excitedly told my dad “The Cardinals got Roger Maris!”

He was not too thrilled on the deal and was hesitant about their plan to move Mike Shannon to third base. But it all worked out. Rog played 12 seasons, with 7 of them being World Series teams, along with 3 rings, two MVPs, and one of the most coveted records in sports, the all time single season home run champ.

Gene Tenace was one of the players that I was surprised to see just how good they were before they came to the Cardinals. I really always considered him more of a backup catcher or a borderline starter than a pretty good player. Just shows how memory and first impressions can play tricks on you.

Back in the day I always pronounced Tenace’s name “Ten-ach-ee”. Just my own twist on things.

He always seems like a DH player who you could put at catcher or first base if needed. Reminded me a bit of a latter day John Blanchard.

But he ended up having a nice career. The Athletics were so bad through the mid ‘60s, but when the draft was implemented in 1965 they were as good as any organization in scouting and drafting players.

They had an eccentric owner who alienated people, which did not help their image. But he was dedicated to winning. One of my favorite stories abound Charlie Finley was when Mudcat Grant was with them. grant played guitar and was a good singer and would appear in night clubs now and then. He opened the song “Please Release Me” and would dedicate it to Charlie Finley. 😀
