ParticipantBrian, thanks for the update on the prospects eligibility. If you have time could you kindly post here the rest of the prospects who have either lost their status, and also those that are close to losing their status. Thanks.
MLB still has Reyes at #1.
June 1, 2018 at 2:47 pm #54749Bader fell off last month. Flaherty crossed the line in his start before last. Others getting closer include Kelly and Hicks, though the former may slow down with Molina close and the latter is taking longer working in relief. Munoz would need three or four weeks of every-day at-bats.
June 1, 2018 at 7:32 pm #54768Brian, correct me if I am wrong, but if you are considering the MLB rookie of the year innings standard for the prospect eligibility of Reyes, he is still a prospect. The rule is “may not have exceeded” 50 innings. Reyes has not exceeded 50 innings and as such would be eligible for rookie of the year next year if he pitches no more this year.
June 1, 2018 at 7:39 pm #54769This will require a video replay as MLB contradicts itself. I am busy tonight and cannot spend more time on it until tomorrow.
Source #1:
https://m.mlb.com/glossary/rules/rookie-eligibility
To be considered a rookie, a player must have entered a season below each of the following thresholds:130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues.
45 total days on an active Major League roster prior to Sept. 1, when clubs are allowed to expand their rosters from the 25-player limit to include any player on the 40-man roster.Source #2:
https://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/about_mlb/rules_regulations.jspA player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).
June 1, 2018 at 7:43 pm #54772Interesting. I only flagged it because I remembered tbere was a controversy about a prospect being ranked on BA’s list a couple of years ago wbo had exactly 130 ab’s.
June 5, 2018 at 5:03 pm #55307Alex Reyes is going for a second opinion (lat injury, shoulder area) on Wednesday. He will Meet with a specialist in Philadelphia. #stlcards #cardinals #mlb

June 6, 2018 at 8:32 am #55447I sure hope ALex gets better news in Philly, but that seems doubtful. Even if he comes back, it will very likely be in the pen. I just hope he comes back this year. He has such an elite arm.
June 6, 2018 at 9:28 am #55457a 2nd opinion on what?
What was the 1st opinion? the lat strain? Does he want 2nd opinion on whether he has a lat strain at all?
And why do a 2nd opinion a week later?
June 6, 2018 at 9:44 am #55459What does all of this mean for 2019? They were hoping to get him up to 100 innings this year so he can take on a full lode next year. Does this mean he will be on a severely limited innings load next year?

Participantperhaps so the swelling goes down. When I tore my acl, I had to wait for the swelling to dissipate before getting the MRI so that the results are cleaner.
June 6, 2018 at 1:23 pm #55525i woudl agree with that but that seems more of a first opinion type of thing…we see it all the time that they wait until the next day or two before saying anything about injuries…but they already said it was a lat strain and it has been a week
and now it seems he had arm soreness before his MLB game and he thought he could pitch through it…obviously not…and this place he is going also is looking at his shoulder/arm
i wonder if there was an earlier diagnosis on some arm problems that they did not release and only through the guffaw of saying 2nd opinion did it get out
i dont think Carlos needed a week to determine his lat strain nor a 2nd opinion..and Reyes is supposed to be worse, if it is to confirm the lat strain or whether he got it..it seems like that is a lot of time
if it is about his shoulder…well that seems more in line with needing a bit of time for swelling etc to go down to make any kind of definitive call on his arm health…especially after having pitched 785 pitches..and normal arm pain or healing needs to happen even for healthy guys… so take your 4 days off between starts add a few days and get a 2nd opinion on the arm concerns…seem to line right up
a 2nd opinion on a lat injury seems weird this long out…im not a doctor obviously but comparing it to CArlos’ recent lat injury prognosis it doesnt seem to be the same…or did it? did i just miss the 2nd opinion for the lat injury for Carlos a week later? I might have
regardless, this combined with them not having a comment on the Sherriff TJ surgery even though Sherriff had posted the picture post-op on it having happened already by Sherriff..and i am losing patience with their secrecy
There was not need for secrecy on Sherriff’s condition or surgery…none at all,…saying they have no comment on that at all is disrespectful to the player, the fans and the professionalism of the organization… once it was posted you HAVE to have a response and announcement of it and about it…and they obviously knew about it as they pay for it and set it all up…
i understand not wanting to break false news too early in a prognosis time for injuries… but when you do that for something that has already been decided and happened and then try to act like you dont know is insulting and disingenuous and only furthers fan and public distrust in the organization

stlcard25ParticipantCarlos had a very minor lat injury. Reyes’ is clearly more significant, thus the need to get a second opinion. I’m pretty sure the swelling might need to go down to see if he’s got a full on tear that needs surgery as well.
Regardless, it doesn’t look that good for Alex. Hopefully he’s back for the stretch but entirely possible he’s not.
June 6, 2018 at 3:42 pm #55568Their reaction to the Sheriff situation was so unique it seems they may not have been aware. If I remember, something similar may have happened with Jamie Garcia
June 6, 2018 at 4:27 pm #55580Should have moved him when we had chance this is now two full years cards will get zero use out of him and who knows if he will come back the same or not.

stlcard25ParticipantBig blow…Reyes had surgery and is out for the season. He should be ready for 2019 I guess.
The team will be ok but it stinks to have lost now two full years while Alex is on the clock. He may come back ok but his major surplus value is basically gone at this point. I don’t think the Cards can count on him being a part of the rotation going forward.
June 6, 2018 at 5:00 pm #55592Like you mentioned the double whammy about this is he isn’t on the mound but is still accumulating service time. He will be eligible for arbitration after 2019.
June 6, 2018 at 6:16 pm #55614Very big blow to the organization, but I think many of us suspected he’d miss the entire season in the first place. To me the disheartening news is the fact he required another surgery. Shoulder surgeries always seem to be more difficult to recover from.

stlcard25ParticipantI read Peavy was out 10 months with his injury and he lost about 2 mph off his fastball when he returned. Now, he was 29 when his happened and not 23, but still it has me worried. Reyes at 95-97 has an elite ceiling…at 93-95 he’s probably mid rotation even if he can get his control issues settled.
June 6, 2018 at 6:42 pm #55620June 6, 2018 at 7:46 pm #55637Now you have to start wondering if Reyes will every have a full season for the Cardinals, or is he going to wash out due to injuries

What I am thinking
June 6, 2018 at 8:49 pm #55659It’s easy to be pessimistic. But talking EvER at this point is extremely premature.
If it makes you fee better to throw him under the bus so you don’t get your hopes up again that’s fine. But he’s young and has plenty more baseball in him.
This isn’t the same injury that caused the TJ surgery. Lots of pitchers get hurt and come back and are very effective.
June 6, 2018 at 8:55 pm #55660Not sure anyone threw him under the bus Jager, just seems to be that guy that can’t escape the injury bug. I hope that is not the case.

Girsch says they are expecting a “complete recovery.” I would interpret that as he won’t lose any velocity.
June 7, 2018 at 10:20 am #55746I would interpret that as PR posturing and trying to be optimistic.
