The most recent comp is Dylan Carlson – age/high school/experience/pedigree. His “decent amount of time at AAA” before reaching the majors was just 18 games, all at the end of the prior season after spending almost all of that year at Double-A.
I am not saying Walker and Winn WILL do that, but they reasonably COULD. Especially Walker with the RF job potentially there for the taking next spring. Performance and opportunity have to coincide for that to happen.

Can you give me something besides the eye test that suggests that this is the case?
A 117 OPS+ and 1.2 WAR in a couple hundred at bats looks very solid to me. Especially considering that at literally every stop he’s scuffled for a bit before taking off.
He should be moved to a corner OF position.
What for? He’s handled 2B just fine and the Cards don’t have anyone who profiles better at the position.
Carlson was probably promoted because of need, and the desire to showcase how effective the minor league is. Keep the fan interest up. Now we have O’Neill, Carlson,
Nootbaar, Dickerson, Yepez, and Burleson for the OF and Goldy, Nado, Gorman, DeJong, Edman, and
Donovan for the IF. No pressing need.There is no need to talk about moving players positions yet. Walker may be the lone exception, as he cannot play third. And AGAIN I would trade virtually anyone for the right player or players in return. But with all these rookies with many years of control, there is no rush.
I would hope that Dejong continues his hot streak, and may be a trade chip. But we really don’t have much shortstop depth, and Winn would be slated for AAA next year.
So, you feel that either Donovan/Winn is an everyday Big League SS and you’re comfortable with Knizner/Herrara behind HP? I can’t say that I’m crazy about the idea of any of those four guys at those two key defensive positions over the couse of a 162 game regular season. I’m aware that guys like OS and YM only come around once or so in a generation and I like Donovan as a utility, but none of the 4 names you mentioned conjure up images of a solid ballclub.
I thought this was the Alec Burleson thread. So, probably won’t get called up this year unless there is an injury due to the need for a 40-man roster spot. Sounds like those will be in demand even after the season is over due to protecting prospects. I do expect he may be added out of ST next year.
The matter I was addressing earlier was whether Edman might get traded this winter, not whether Gorman is or will be any good. The point I had made before is that Tommy will not be traded unless we have an everyday starter at SS and at 2B besides him. Edman has been getting starts at 2B vs righties which would be the job of a the left swinging platoon player, if there was an everyday left swinging platoon player.. My point was Edman is not going anywhere unless and until there is an everyday second baseman or platoon. Obviously, there is not as of now since Edman is getting the starts there.
I think the fact that since the end of May Gorman is hitting just over .200 and OBP less than .300 is standing in the way of him being the everyday starting second baseman versus righties. So I don’t think Edman is going anywhere. He is also backstopping the DeJong experiment as of now at least.
TON and Walker are more tradeable than Winn in my opinion… I’ve been looking up random Burleson plays and he doesn’t look that bad from the eye test. He won’t win a GG, but if he gets on base 35% of the time and hits 30HR that works for me.
The Cards need a 1A starter and probably a 1B, all of the top teams have that.
O’Neill is struggling. Carlson isn’t lighting it up. Any predictions on when Burly might be called up?
2023 or possibly a September callup.

They were both good hitters in AAA too. September callups will probably be a couple pitchers who have been up previously that Ollie is familiar with.

20 home runs and 75 RBIs in 92 gamesThat’s a very weak response, BB. He’s outperforming at the AAA level every Cardinal who has passed through AAA in recent memory. And please don’t point to Carlson, who only played in 20 games at that level.
Reminds me of the “free Juan Yepez” cries last year, who BTW, hit better at Triple-A then than Burleson this year – not that it is a competition nor even all that relevant as circumstances are different every year.
(As a reminder, Yepez was not added to the 40-man roster and called up until after Memphis’ 2021 season was over.)
gscottar, how soon we forget Randy, though on second thought, he didn’t get his own thread. It was spread over a number of them as I recall.
Brian – I don’t think Yepez put up the type of numbers that Burleson has put up at Memphis – including BA, OBP, Slg, OPS, HR, RBI, or K%.
bccran, the bottom line is OPS. .971 (Yepez 2021 Memphis) vs. .930 (Burleson 2022).
Again, a comparison doesn’t matter, anyway, but my recent memory is clearly different from yours.
Then again, maybe a different comparison – a 2022-only one – could matter. There isn’t room for Yepez right now in St. Louis. Once his rehab is over and an opening is created, Yepez would be in competition with Burleson (who is not on the 40-man) and others who are on the 40-man to be called up.
This has nothing to do with Burleson’s offensive numbers in Triple-A, which are great, but with how the Cardinals manage their rosters. But I think I have said this before, as have others…
You and I both know that OPS isn’t the end all, Brian. A guy could hit a slug of home runs with no one on and he could have a high OPS but low RBI number. A guy could have a high BA but with not a lot of power and drive in a bunch of runs. Also, defense needs to be taken into consideration obviously.
I’ve seen Yepez play the OF, as have most posters.
