There’s a good piece of buzz from A.E. Schafer at VEB about some AAA players that have been making some noise recently. Good read for those interested in what we have in the pipeline.
Yepez is having a very impressive year. Read that article earlier and his year is even more impressive looking at the K/BB and the bad luck on batter balls. Maybe he’s a player maybe he’s not, but he’s sure a lot more than anyone figured he was when that Matt Adam’s trade was made
So the rosters expand to 28 tomorrow. Will the Cardinals immediately call up two players? If so, who will it be?
Ali Sanchez might be a candidate if they want a third catcher.
Juan Yepez might get the call but he doesn’t have a 40 man spot.
Maybe Seth Elledge if they want another bullpen arm.If it’s a position player, here are the OPS stats for the Redbirds –
Yepez – .981
Nootbaar – .900

Gorman – .796
Robertson – .701
Sanchez – .679

Hurst – .568The decision seems pretty obvious.
As I stated, BB, the above are only the position players. Here’s the WHIP of the various pitchers at Memphis for the year.
Warner – 1.07
Whitley – 1.13
Ramirez – 1.17
Rondon – 1.37
Thomas – 1.40
Woodford – 1.56
Elledge – 1.86One spot is likely for Hudson, but it may not be immediate. Or in the interim, it could be any of the 40-man guys we’ve already seen this year (Oviedo, Woodford, Elledge).
The other I’ve heard rumors may be a third catcher, opening up some time for Knizner. Sanchez has the 40-man spot.
I’d be surprised if there is a new addition to the 40-man now.
bccran, there are players on both of your lists that do not have a 40 man spot, meaning they are unlikely to get called up.
If true Dickson will need a 40 man spot.

I don’t get why we don’t use Oviedo In relief the rest of the year instead of adding Dickson? He hadn’t been pitching well at Memphis since they sent him down.
forsch31 when I said Moroff I meant in the off-season housecleaning. While we are at it add Williams and Dean.
I wonder if Herrera and Santos may get called up to Memphis to replace Dickson and Sanchez? Or maybe bring up Pallante for pen use?
Elledge has a 1.861 WHIP in Memphis this year and yet he gets mentioned as a possible call up. He throws hard and strikes out a lot of guys but has always allowed way too much traffic on the base paths from walks and hits to be of any use. 7th year in system and doesn’t have a prayer of being useful on the MLB roster. I think he is an good example of how the fixation on velocity and K rate has doomed the pitcher side of the system. He was put on the 40 man roster and made it all the way to MLB without demonstrating the ability to keep opponents off the bases at any level above A ball. Johan Quezada is the same guy. I am sure there are more.

Well, four of the five are currently on the injured list. That seems a pretty good start.
They do have to clear one spot for Dickson… but that could be a move of one of the injured pitchers to the 60-day IL.

Like Brian said, 4 of the 5 are on the IL. Plus, even if Miller wasn’t on the IL I doubt the Cardinals would DFA him.

The only reason I mentioned him is that he is on the 40 man roster and some of the other options aren’t. The Cardinals usually choose the path of least resistance but it looks like this time they won’t if they promote Dickson.
UncleDenny, I’m sorry. I misunderstood your time frame. I agree that Moroff should be gone after the year. I also agree that Williams should be removed from the 40 man roster. At Dean’s age, I don’t care if he is removed but I still think there is a small chance he could have a couple of good years in the majors. However, with the prospects coming up from behind that need playing time in AAA and Gorman almost ready for the majors, I am willing to lose Dean for the 40 man roster space.
I am thinking Santos should be in our top 30. He is old for a prospect, but his numbers are good, and he has good stuff. He may need to be added to the 40 man roster, as I believe he can be a 7 year free agent. The Cards just don’t have enough pitching depth, as we learned the hard way this year.

I’m excited to see that Francisco will join Walker and Winn in Peoria. And a current draftee has made it to High A.
You can really make an argument that we haven’t had a good or surprising pitching performance out of our top 50 prospects coming into 2021. Liberatore has had growing pains, but has improved as the season has gone on. Thompson, as has been discussed here, should have been sent down to AA at some point. Oviedo may be better as a reliever. Pallante and Ralston have good stuff, but slowed by IL stints, and should pitch at AAA and AA respectively next year.
