No go this week Pugs as I am still doing the “8 to 5” bit. Took on a contract financial reporting assignment, but this should end in the next few weeks and I am going to stay away from offices and play retired guy through Spring and Summer. Maybe permanently, but we will see how it goes and if anyone makes me an offer I can’t refuse at some point.

Quick update on the game today, Pallante actually bobbled the ball on the play to 2nd base and no play was made. Thanks to Rob Rains for helping me remember what happened! Really impressed with most of the pitchers today.

Today (Thursday) is a Gibson/Liberatore piggy back start. No TV until Saturday.

That’s several days off in a row now for Nootbaar while the other starters have been mostly playing. Hopefully he’s not hurt too.

Brian, I’m curious if you know what the red/blue/black letters mean for the guys on the lineup sheet? I have good guesses for the bench guys but I’m really unsure about the starters.

Red means a left handed hitter, blue is switch hitter, and black is right handed.

Thanks 64. That wasn’t what I was thinking at all. Now I feel silly for not realizing what should have been fairly obvious!

I would just add that the color coding is the same for pitchers (red = LHP, black = RHP). The coding is helpful to the manager and bench coach during the game when making substitutions. They actually physically cross guys’ names off the list as they appear in the game so they can quickly at a glance see who is still available.

I was going to write something about Nootbaar’s injury but thought better of it. “precautionary” scares me.

Gibson again had trouble in the first with four Astros runs in. Walker hit a solo HR in the second.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.

So last season the Cards won the Grapefruit League and then stank it up when it counted….maybe this year will be the reverse of that.

Carpenter homered and Burly had an RBI double. 4-3 Astros in the fifth.

You had to know Carp would walk into one sooner or later.

John King has been making it easier for Oli to figure out his bullpen.

Cards lose 6-3 and fall to 4-6-2 on the spring. Just seven hits, but two were home runs.

King has allowed multiple runs in three of his four appearances, though only one of his two runs allowed today was earned. His ERA is 13.50. Gibson, who took the loss, is at 12.60 through two starts. But, hey, it is 0.00 after the first inning. So there’s that…

Lynn pitches Friday night at the Nats. No TV. Matz goes on Saturday.

The crowd really got excited when we loaded the bases in the ninth and Luken Baker came up! But alas, mighty Casey struck out.

A single would have pulled us within one run with the potential tying run on third.

Down by 3 with two outs in the ninth, the odds are long no matter what. But, in theory, there are different ways to play it in such a situation. Having the all or nothing basher stand in is an electric moment, but it is low probability and not the only way to approach it. Of course, you have to have the right bench to have other options. In our case, we don’t have any options. The game is like that now.

I can imagine Herzog sending up a pesky contact hitter and having him show bunt to draw in the infield so he can try to slap one through to pull us within one, with that tying run on third. Then maybe send out your fastest available guy to pinch run, even if its a pitcher out of the pen. Have him dance around off third to give the pitcher, the catcher, and the infield something to think about besides what they need to be thinking about. Now your odds are as good as they are ever going to be, and it is every bit as electric for fans who know what they are seeing. That is what baseball is supposed to be.

With Baker up there in that situation put a k on your scorecard and you will be right most of the time. It’s a 3 outcome game now. K W HR boring.

Nootbar has fractured ribs according to the Post Dispatch…the OF situation could be real scary…I guess right now Burleson is the 4th OF

I would guess sometime in mid May for fractured ribs to heal and the rehab games

I think Burleson is the 3rd outfielder at the moment.

Walker walks, steals a base and comes home on Gorman’s long ball. Lynn walked three in the first including the Nats’ first run. A three-run double chased Lynn from the game with two outs in the first. Cards down 4-2.
