If Jeffrey Alan Caglianone is somehow still a free man at #7…….you grab him. Watch for Cam Smith.
July 14, 2024 at 6:01 pm #260395Fangraphs day of mock has Wetherholt falling to the Cards at #7, and they also have him rated as the #1 prospect in the draft. What a gift that would be. Rainer is getting a lot of rumors to the White Sox at 5.
July 14, 2024 at 6:15 pm #260396The Aussie Bazzana goes #1 overall. Not a bad pick as he has a great hit tool and great power. First 2B ever taken at #1 overall.
July 14, 2024 at 6:28 pm #260397Cincy #2 – Burns
Rockies #3 – Condon
A’s #4 – Reports are KurtzJuly 14, 2024 at 6:29 pm #260398White Sox #5 – Word is Hagen is it
July 14, 2024 at 6:30 pm #260399Would love Wetherholt to fall to us. I thought he would be gone already.
July 14, 2024 at 6:30 pm #260400I really, really hope the Cards don’t reach for a SP since Hagen is going next. Please let Wetherholt make it past KC
July 14, 2024 at 6:33 pm #260401#6 KC will be Caglianone
Please take Wetherholt STL!!!!July 14, 2024 at 6:37 pm #260402Longenhagen is hearing Wetherholt #7 to the Cards!!!!!!!!
July 14, 2024 at 6:40 pm #260403This has to be a no brainer. Wetherholt is there for the picking!!!
July 14, 2024 at 6:44 pm #260404JJ Wetherholt welcome to the STL Cards! Rated #3 by BA, #4 by MLB, #1 by Fangraphs, and #3 by The Athletic.
Really excited to see this kid in a STL uniform.
July 14, 2024 at 6:45 pm #260405Sweet! Same here – really looking forward to seeing this kid’s progress. The highest rated player we have picked in loongggg time!
July 14, 2024 at 6:47 pm #260406Seems like a standup kid as well who is very well composed and confident. Absolutely thrilled by this pick.
July 14, 2024 at 6:49 pm #260407Seems like a great pick for the Cards. Some mocks had Wetherholt at number one so it seems like unbelievable value at number 7. Awesome!
And congrats to Hagen Smith at number 5. The White Sox will be happy with their selection.
July 14, 2024 at 6:56 pm #260408The Cardinals may have got the best player in the draft in Wetherholt. He’s a Burleson/Donovan type talent. With Winn an obvious fixture at SS for many years to come. It will be interesting to see where Wetherholt fits in. A Gorman trade for needed starting pitching maybe. Or maybe Arenado gets moved for the right deal. Wetherholt ain’t that for off from the majors.
July 14, 2024 at 6:57 pm #260409How does he fit with Winn in the fold?
July 14, 2024 at 6:58 pm #260410Here is my collection of data on Wetherholt.
Scouting Org Position Scouting Rank Overall Risk Hit Raw Power Game Power Run Field Arm
MLB Prospect Pipeline SS/2B 4 60 N/A 65 N/A 50 60 50 50
Baseball America SS 3 55 High 65 N/A 55 60 50 50
Fangraphs 2B 1 50 Low 60 55 55 45 50 40
Average 3 55 63 55 53 55 50 47July 14, 2024 at 7:00 pm #260411KCB, I imagine Wetherholt would swap to 2B in the MLB with Winn at SS. That is a problem for the future though and getting the best player available is all that matters.
July 14, 2024 at 7:03 pm #260412“(whether he stays at shortstop in the pros remains to be seen). Wetherholt might not have the star potential of some of the other players picked around him, but he is one of the safest bets to be a solid major leaguer. — Mullen ” ESPN

July 14, 2024 at 7:06 pm #260413blingboy, be skeptical if you wish. Wetherholt can really hit. Kind of like getting a future Burleson and/or Donovan. Stay tuned.
July 14, 2024 at 7:06 pm #260414Bling always with the pessimistic take. I always hear who Bling doesn’t like, but I don’t recall ever hearing who he does like.
July 14, 2024 at 7:07 pm #260415Detroit with really good value taking Rainer at #11
July 14, 2024 at 7:09 pm #260416We know he can hit. If he stays healthy there will be a place. Thats the nice thing about drafting ss’s. They are athletic enough to play most positions. I wonder if they had any idea he would be available.
July 14, 2024 at 7:11 pm #260418I wasn’t to excited at 1st, then saw a Chase Utley comp, I definitely wouldn’t complain about that. Get Winn locked up for an extra few years this offseason and that could be a heck of an up the middle IF for years to come.
I picture him, due to the stats and what I’ve been able to watch, make him seem like a perfect 2 hole hitter. Would that be accurate?
July 14, 2024 at 7:12 pm #260419Shady, he’s a top draft pick. No offense to your boys, but lets hope he’s better than those guys.
