Well, I quoted the ESPN draft tracker site’s blurb on the pick, and added the height, since he’s a bit undersized, and IL history. It sounds like not giggling like a schoolgirl when the star quarterback walks past is now condsidered being negative or not liking somebody.
July 14, 2024 at 7:16 pm #260421Yes Wetherholt would be a great #2 hitter. 60-65 grade hit tool with a 60 pitch selection. 55 grade power as well so 20+ bomb potential.
July 14, 2024 at 7:18 pm #260422Bling, I would just like to hear which draft players you would have liked though. There is nothing wrong about being excited about a player. It beats the alternative of never looking forward to anything.
July 14, 2024 at 7:21 pm #260425FWIW. Jose Altuve is 5’6.
If Edman comes all the way back, I could see shooing Gorman this coming offseason.
July 14, 2024 at 7:22 pm #260426Wetherholdt played 2nd at WVU his sophomore year, when he had his best year, I think his 1st year he played a lot of third base
July 14, 2024 at 7:22 pm #260427Jurrangelo Cijntje to SEA at #15. I love that pick for them as he is the most interesting player in the draft and they have one of the best pitching dev programs.
July 14, 2024 at 7:24 pm #260428I see Gorman moving to 1st base
July 14, 2024 at 7:26 pm #260429Any guesses when and at which level Wetherholdt takes the field?
July 14, 2024 at 7:31 pm #260431Burleson will be moving to 1B next season. Some have no clue as to how good of of player Wetherholt is. I know the Cardinals could have certainly used an “ace-type” pitcher. But the thought of Winn, Donovan, Burleson and Wetherholt in the same lineup could be special. Those four can fricken’ hit at a high level.
July 14, 2024 at 7:34 pm #260433I am guessing Wetherholt starts in A+ ball. I assume it will be August before he plays.
July 14, 2024 at 7:36 pm #260434MIL is taking OF Braylon Payne. Ranked between 50 and 90. They are expected to be taking him underslot to save money on their subsequent picks. I’m curious if their guy was taken before they picked.
July 14, 2024 at 7:45 pm #260435TB with Theo Gillen. I had him 10 and I fully expect him to be a star with TB.
July 14, 2024 at 7:45 pm #260436I don’t know much about the draft. But I’m excited that a lot of Cardinals fans are excited. I like the fact we took a hitter this early as pitchers are too fragile. And I like that we took a guy with a great hit tool with at least some power. I wouldn’t worry much at all about where he fits on today’s team. Lots of things are likely to change by the time he’s fully ready to come up. Perhaps he take Nado’s spot at 3B after 2027? Who knows? Hopefully he’s ready a little before then.
July 14, 2024 at 7:53 pm #260437He is probably the best pure hitter in the draft and he has speed.
July 14, 2024 at 7:54 pm #260438I see Wetherholt as sort of an infield version of Corbin Carroll. Not the biggest, flashiest player but possibly the best. Carroll is struggling this year, but he will find his groove.
July 14, 2024 at 7:59 pm #260439Bling, I would just like to hear which draft players you would have liked though.
I am fine with the pick. I would not have preferred they do something else. I am not sure why people think otherwise.
July 14, 2024 at 8:14 pm #260442pitchers are too fragile.
They are, and as far as I can tell, the practice of slow walking starters early isn’t working. They still get hurt. They don’t turn out any better.
July 14, 2024 at 8:39 pm #260443I like the catcher Walker Janek that Houston just drafted. 70 grade arm with great receiving and a chance to have an average bat.
July 14, 2024 at 8:53 pm #260447July 14, 2024 at 8:56 pm #260448The situation with Herrera has convinced me that you build a catcher around the arm. 8 years in the system and he loses the backup catcher job to a guy sporting an OPS+ of 68 who can throw better. That’s a sad commentary on something.
July 14, 2024 at 9:18 pm #260451Great stuff Brian with the Flores quotes and getting an interview with Wetherholt. Is the full video of the interview with Wetherholt going to be made available? I only see an image link.
July 14, 2024 at 9:19 pm #260452There is nothing sad about that…it is good depth.
July 14, 2024 at 9:31 pm #260454I just loaded our press Q&A with Wetherholt into the above article.
July 14, 2024 at 9:37 pm #260455If we were doing a top 10 list today, I’d likely put him just ahead of Hence. Mathew’s would be my #3.
Would you fellas/ladies put Bernal or Crooks higher? Pages has definitely taken every ounce of his opportunity and ran with it, I love him for the roll they have been using him in.
July 14, 2024 at 9:47 pm #260456Thanks for updating to include the interview Brian!
