blingboy, I agree. Let’s hope he moves up through system like Burleson did. From the reports I’ve got, Wetherholt could be a Burly-type hitter for the Cardinals, eventually.
July 20, 2024 at 5:08 pm #261014RBK
ParticipantOnce again:
“Wetherholt has excellent plate discipline, an extremely low chase rate (14%), a double-digit BB rate (18%), is fast (28.7 ft/s), and potentially can play multiple high-value defensive positions. The only thing he and Burleson have in common is they’re both LHHs with high contact rates.”
July 20, 2024 at 5:14 pm #261015RBK, “The only thing he and Burleson have in common is they’re both LHHs with high contact rates.”” Yes , and that’s what I was referring to. And I’m hoping Wetherholt can match the slugging Burly has going.
July 20, 2024 at 5:16 pm #261016Now that Weatherholt has signed for only slightly above slot, not the $7.5 to 8 million some outlets were speculating, the Cards remaining hyper-risk averse draft strategy makes even less sense!! All the LOW ceiling picks were assumed to be necessary to meet Weatherholt’s price. Now that it’s been found to not be the case-at all, why not take some chances on higher upside picks? Seriously, this is really bothering me!!
The Cards system is filled with utility infielders, 4th or 5th outfielders and 5th starter/swingman types, along with a boatload of AAAA players (& that’s their Top 30 list)! This year’s draft has literally one player who could be an impact player at the MLB level…one. I don’t need to wait 4-5 years for the benefit of hindsight perspective. It’s a 100% fact right now. Jack Findlay is a soft throwing lefty (shocker) coming off TJ surgery & who is almost 22 (as a junior). Why did he command $175K over slot? Was he going to go back to college next year & hope to boost his stock, on what would presumably be a strict innings limit & get more than $150K? The ghost of Steven Gingery wants to know…
July 20, 2024 at 6:36 pm #261021I agree Gronk. Being able to sign him at slot invalidates the strategy followed the whole rest of the way. We get to pick 7th and take guys we could have taken if we were picking 27th.
July 20, 2024 at 6:45 pm #261022Sorry Shady, but if Wetherholt doesn’t hit better than Burly I will consider him a bust.
July 20, 2024 at 6:49 pm #261024PadsFS
ParticipantAlso agree Gronk, it doesn’t make sense.
I like the 7th and 8th rounders but the 3rd rounder should have had more risk. Hopefully, they just really liked Holiday.
July 20, 2024 at 7:28 pm #261030CC, you have got to be kidding. Burly is hitting like you’d like for a high 1st round draft pick to hit. Please tell me why you might disagree.
July 20, 2024 at 7:33 pm #261033Yeah, Burly is leading the team in RBIs, total bases and homers. I would be fine with that from Wetherholt.
July 20, 2024 at 7:44 pm #261034blingboy, let’s hope both Wetherholt and Walker are hitting like Burleson is now when they are 25.
July 20, 2024 at 7:47 pm #261035RBK
ParticipantIf they do, they’ll likely be a lot more valuable than Burleson (esp if Walker can be just an average defender in RF).
July 20, 2024 at 8:08 pm #261036Sorry Shady, but if Wetherholt doesn’t hit better than Burly I will consider him a bust.
Wetherholt could not hit as well as Burly and still be a much better, more valuable player. That’s the part our buddy Shady doesn’t grasp.
July 20, 2024 at 8:19 pm #261042Burly hitting well and would be satisfied with that from a late first round pick . But a top 10 pick needs to be superstar with superstar numbers.
The fact Burly is leading the team in several offensive categories says more about the rest of the team than about Burly. Burly wasn’t even an all star selection or in serious discussion to be one
July 20, 2024 at 8:26 pm #261044Thats a pretty accurate post CC.
July 21, 2024 at 6:50 am #261067I don’t mind Oakland getting it. While they are in the San Fran metro area, Oakland doesn’t get a lot of benefit from it.
Prior to the Giants building their current stadium and the A’s gaming the system for corporate welfare, the A’s actually outdrew the Giants in the Bay area.
They chose a business model that includes crying poor to maximize profitability. The Rays and Marlins copied them. It is bad for the game, because if large market clubs weren’t crying poor, the money could go to smaller market clubs to help balance out competitive factors or could go to expansion, which expands the game to new metros.
July 21, 2024 at 6:55 am #261070The fact Burly is leading the team in several offensive categories says more about the rest of the team than about Burly.
100% agree.
July 21, 2024 at 6:59 am #261071Now that Weatherholt has signed for only slightly above slot, not the $7.5 to 8 million some outlets were speculating, the Cards remaining hyper-risk averse draft strategy makes even less sense!!
Yes, I was hoping they would grab an impact bat in the third round.
This draft is disappointing because they didn’t get an ace pitcher and didn’t draft a potential MOTO bat.
July 21, 2024 at 8:33 am #261074We’ve had a longstanding pattern where our even year drafts have been good to great and the odd year drafts have been bad to terrible.
Notable players taken by year with draft round in parentheses:
2016: Carlson (1), Hudson (1), Gallen (3), Edman (6), Knizner (7)
2017: None
2018: Gorman (1), Donovan (7), Nootbaar (8), Leahy (17) – L Baker also could add value
2019: Thompson (1), Pallante (4), Pages (6)
2020: Walker (1), Winn (2), Burleson (2) – Hence and Bedell are also up and coming
2021: Graceffo (5) – McGreevey and Granillo will also likely add value at some point
2022: None yet, but you have Hjerpe, Crooks, Scott, and Rajcic as likely future players with some other possibles
There’s a lot of value that’s been created from the 2016, 2018, and 2020 drafts. And 2022 has potential. Let’s hope 2024 follows the pattern.
July 21, 2024 at 10:05 am #261076People sound as if they think there is one idealized standard set of criteria against which every position players is to be measured, apples to apples. That is nonsense and reeks of a fantasy ball approach imposed upon brick and mortar baseball. There are 7 defensive positions besides the battery, each with its requirements and role within the whole defense. There are 9 slots in the batting order, with various requirements. A leadoff hitter is a very different thing than a cleanup hitter, and a good one of either would likely suck at the other, and a team needs an effective example of each. A first baseman needs certain abilities and a center fielder needs others. Lack of a ML caliber left side arm is a factor for some positions and not for others. A player needs to be measured against the sets of criteria which applies to defensive and offensive roles which he might reasonably be able and called upon to fill.
July 21, 2024 at 11:09 am #261081KBC, RBK, CC, where would the Cardinals be without Burleson’s production so far this season? They’d be about where they were last season. Give some credit where credit is due. I’d be ecstatic if Wetherholt is the hitter Burleson is now when Wetherholt is 25. Hopefully, he will be. If he’s even better than Burleson is as a hitter, that would be “icing on the cake”. Not every player can be a 5 tool player. Very few are. But not every player can hit like Burly can either.
July 21, 2024 at 12:47 pm #261091RBK
ParticipantThey were 44-54 at this point last season. So you’re saying Burleson (1.4 WAR) has created 7 additional wins this year?
It would help your credibility if you could stick to actual facts and evidence in your praise, rather than dropping whopper after whopper like “[Burleson] is a good/average/decent fielder,” “[Burleson] has at least average speed,” and “Burleson has been worth 7 additional wins this year,” to cite just a few of your fact-free gems from the last couple days.
July 21, 2024 at 1:15 pm #261101RBK, did you enjoy that last Burly blast? That was a “whopper”, indeed. lol

BHC, are you including the 5% overage in that calculation? With the overage, they should have a tick over $10.7 mm of total pool. FWIW, Davis’s slot value (Rd 5) is $485,700.
Yes that includes the 5% overage. However, Davis’ bonus was just announced a bit ago by Carlos Collazo of Baseball America and he signed for the full slot amount. Therefore, the Cardinals only left $124,550 unused. They spent $386,100 over their allocated amount.

ParticipantBHC, thanks for the follow-up, much appreciated. So they landed about where they do most years, just under the overage limit.
July 21, 2024 at 5:58 pm #261145This thread is about the 2024 draft. It should not be the 453rd Burly thread.
