Maybe the games are too short for much run scoring.

Did anyone keep count of how many guys tried to bunt their way on?

Haha!…Yeah Euro, I once saw Molina try to score from 1B on a hit into the RCF gap. By the time he was thrown out at HP, I needed a shave…

Thanks for posting the options info.

I’m sure it’s a negotiated rule but seems like players (not teams) should have the unilateral right to waive it if they want to each occurrence above 5.

Last night I was watching a spring training game between the Reds and Padres. Wil Myers was at the plate, he stepped out of the box briefly, the ump then called a strike on him for “delaying” which happened to be strike three so Myers was sent back to the bench.

Good grief can you imagine if Game 7 of the World Series ends that way? MLB may be going overboard with this pitch clock thing.

Disregarding the fielding positions, I kind of like the placement of the 9, 1 and 2 slot of this order.

Looks like Woodruff will be a member of the 5 man due to the Wainwright injury. Local paper claims Wainwright won’t be available for “several weeks.”

You can’t have O’Neill in the #2 slot. He strikes out too much. Assume this is just a typical spring training lineup.

    From cbs sports
Cardinals’ Lars Nootbaar: Expected to get look at leadoff
    Rotowire 19 HRS AGO
Nootbaar is under consideration for the Cardinals’ leadoff spot, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan appear to be the likeliest candidates to bat leadoff against righties and might fill the 1-2 slots in some order. That would give them plenty of run-scoring opportunities with Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras behind them in the 3-4-5 spots. Tommy Edman is also in the mix at leadoff, although that might only be versus lefties.

It will probably be 1 Noot, 2 Donovan, 9 Edman.

A paltry 1 run in the last 2 games. Tell Turner Ward that Walmart is hiring and good luck.

Because 2 games is a great sample to judge his coaching skills.

I don’t know who’ll be the first Cardinal to step into the batter’s box on opening day, but I’m almost entirely certain that if Edman gets 550 PA’s from the lead-off slot, he’ll score 100 runs in ’23.

1TD, if Edman keeps his 2022 pace for runs scored from the leadoff spot, he would score 90 runs in 550 PAs. He would need to pick it up a little.

I’ll be darned, Forsch. Well, he’ll just have to collect a few more doubles. I thought that was his problem in ’22 in which he only had 31. He collected 41 doubles in ’21. At any rate, he still has options. He could also take the outlaw approach and simply appropriate and loot a few more SB’s. He’s a pretty good sneak thief and almost never gets CS. I’d still guess he gets pushed across HP 100 times. That’s good. Some things never change in the game of baseball. One of them is that runs are pretty important.

400 PAs is a good sample size and Tommy’s 2022 OBP was .318 in the leadoff slot. It was .324 overall, which is in line with his career OBP. That is not really acceptable from the leadoff slot, marginal maybe. A platoon is possible, but Tommy’s OBP vs lefties was only .321 last year. I admit we could put him there and hope for a career year.

Obviously, the alternatives need to be considered and Noot and Donovan are the obvious choices. They both do better getting on base, but only have their rookie seasons to look at. Who knows what they will do this year. Edman is somewhat more predictable, being the crusty veteran of the group.

.318 obp in the 1 hole isn’t nearly good enough.

For some reason whenever MLB and free appears in the same sentence I expect the extinction asteroid to enter Earth’s atmosphere at any moment. Weird, huh.
