Maybe the biomechanics algo doesn’t work when somebody has a boo boo so they have to sit out.

An article in the local paper focuses on the importance of Dylan Carlson to feature what’s termed in the article as “impact offense.” I’m not entirely certain how the author defines that term, but to me, it means power type numbers that approach pushing 80 to 100 runs across HP and somewhere around 30 HR’s. That said, I certainly hope Dylan disregards the article because I don’t think he’s that type of a hitter. In my view, if he can reach base approaching an OBP of near .340, collect 60 to 65 RBI’s and cross HP somewhere near 75 times, he’ll provide more than enough of an impact to the Cardinals offense to be an irreplacable component. My primary concern is that he’ll try too hard to be the type of hitter that I don’t believe that he is which may have been what contributed to his lackluster performance in ’22.

It seems like they want very badly to replace complementary piece type outfielders with impact bat types. During a previous iteration of the outfield competition, somebody or other said. ‘Let’s say Lane Thomas wins the competition, so what’. It seems like maybe the organization was listening.

Gorman struck out three times in four atbats today. I realize it’s just one game but still not good.

And the other time he grounded into the shift.

Maybe Gorman strikes out when he tries to hit away from the shift.

Gorman’s 3 K’s today makes 8 in 24 PA’s and if that trend continues to head in the wrong direction is alarming. The good news is that Walker continues to rip it up and I’d say that unless he hits the wall at Daytona and displays an O’fer for the remainder of ST’ing, he’s on the Big League roster on opening day. Donovan leads everyone in RBI’s. He’ll probably be placed in the 5 slot to protect Nado when the season starts…

Menphis could be pretty good this year, lol.

I’ll be darned…I just checked the guide feature on the TV to see if there was a Cardinal ST’ing game televised today. I came up with Nicarauga vs. Cardinals. How the heck did they outbid Las Vegas?

Hudson with 4 shutout innings, but 3 walks. Helsley strikes out the side in his inning. Hicks gives up a hit, 2 walks, 3 runs (just one earned) in his 2/3 of an inning. So they’re all in midseason form.

Hudson usually gives up his walks in the first inning or two. After that he hits his groove and throws sinkers, sliders, and gets a lot of ground balls. I can’t see him being helpful in the bullpen unless it’s for long relief only. It would probably take the wind out of his sails for him to get sent down to Memphis so he can remain a starter although, as stated by Brian earlier, it’s hard nowadays for a pitcher to go from reliever to starter, so maybe Memphis would be the best place for him to start the season since the rotation is pretty much already set. Disregarding the cliche about ‘never too much pitching’, with Hudson, Woodford, and Liberatore all chomping at the bit for a rotation spot, it appears that the Cardinals do, in fact, have too much starting pitching. And add to that the question as to what to do with VerHagan.

The bullpen is not quite as crowded, but Wilking Rodriguez might just complicate matters for someone vying for a spot in the pen. I thought he looked much better in his last outing than he did in hist first outing.

I can see this. I watched his last outing.

My gut feeling is there are maybe a half dozen WBC teams that could provide relevant competition for big leaguers, and I think Team Nicaragua is not one of them.

It does seem like a golden opportunity for pitchers to work on stuff without getting their head handed to them in front of the boss.

One has to look hard to find major leaguers in this lineup…

I’m interested in seeing Liberatore and hopefully Misiewicz. Monty went 3 last time out, vs Mets I think, so I guess he goes 4 tonight.

Donovan with 5 HR’s in 468 PA’s last season. With 28 PA’s in FL, he’s holding a bag containing 4 ST’ing taters. Next thing you know, they’ll be asking both Donnie and Walker about Mantle and Maris…

Haha 1td, bridging a couple of generation gaps! The more things change, the more they stay the same. You had to love it when Mickey and Roger would riff on about biomechanics, exit velo and launch angle.

With Donovan, I like seeing a player expand his tool box. Same in tennis. But I hope we’re not in for an eerie, compressed version of the Carp transformation. It can be a fine line to get it right.

The idea of Donny with last year’s batting line except way more power is something to drool over. But it is probably a good idea not to extrapolate too much from 28 spring training PAs. It will take a couple months for opponents to find out if the newly optimized swing has opened up holes and vulnerabilities which can be exploited, and if Donny can simultaneously adjust to whatever they come up with and also maintain the power in the swing. I am hoping for the best, but the opposition has tech savvy gurus too.

I have not seen enough of DeJong this spring to know anything. Are we seeing any reason for optimism with him?

Euro, I wondered the same thing. Hopefully, Donovan isn’t selling out for power. Even so far this spring, I’ve seen several shots die out on the warning track.

Some MLB teams would love to have this lineup that is minus our regs playing in that world baseball thing.
