Also note that Wheeler was the 6th pick in 2009. Nola was the 7th pick in 2014. It’s hard to draft that kind of talent when you never pick earlier than 17th because your team is always good. While we want to and are trying to make great pitchers internally, we just aren’t starting with top 10 draft talent to build on like these guys were. So we will do our best with Hence and Hjerpe and Liberatore and Graceffo, but I don’t think anyone is betting that those guys will be as good as Wheeler or Nola.

Fermin out at least 3 weeks.

Just having Flaherty and Matz on the whether they pitched well,as both did, or even had poor outings has to make us feel a little better about the rotation in general…. now Montgomery. Keeping guys off the IL is so important.

Jnevel I would argue that they are in love with what they think are Ferraris no matter how much time they spend in the shop. The Ford that always starts sits getting rusty. They have had no interest in work-a-day horses for a long time now.

Yep, he was never my favorite, but Jake Westbrook answered the call every 5th day. He came with hand crank windows and no carpet on the floorboard of the cab and even though he’d cough and sputter, he spun up and fired when you turned the key…And besides, he was the winning pitcher of decision in Game 6…

Are Mikolas and Wainwright not the “Fords” you’re referring to? We are happy to have those. And I expect more of them are coming up.

The Fords haven’t won any races in a long time, and probably won’t anytime soon either. The Cards are forced into betting on upside due to the widespread tanking and the number of super teams out there now.

So they end up buying a couple Fords midseason once the wheels fall off the Ferrari wannabes. Two years in a row now. But let’s do the same thing again and expect a different result.

    ZTR asked:

Is Flaherty still ok this morning? Just checking.

I saw him in the clubhouse this morning getting ready to do drills with those staying behind. Looked normal to me.

The Fords only get you to the starting line, and then they’re totally outclassed by the other, better cars.

I agree that the pitching staff badly needs an upgrade. I also think that the upgrade needs to be a real one.

If anyone is watching the game, are the balls hit to LF and CF by the Tigers actual hits or are they balls that would be caught by our normal OFers? I see a lot of hits to Yepez and Gomez.

forsch, I’m not watching the game today, but yesterday I saw Gomez cover a lot of ground when he made a fairly nice running catch in the LF corner. Seemed to move faster than you might guess.

Boys are WHIP-ing up some atrocious ERAs today. We’ve got to beef up the metaphoric discussion to include Edsels now.

Well, at least the Cardinals out-tatered Detroit 2 to 1, but 19 hits is a lot of hits. Heck, that’s almost 20. Better now than later, I guess.

I guess we should not be too concerned about a couple of AA pitchers getting knocked around.

Yes, sometimes it is just as important to know who is NOT ready for prime time.

Excited to see Walker in the lineup. I realize the young man is probably being overhyped, but him being in the lineup ramps up my interest just a little.

On an unrelated note, hope ESPN doesn’t parade a guest voice into every half inning. I don’t think they provide a lot of value, and they really distract from what’s happening on the field. One or two updates from “the cat” on Bally are plenty for me.

Sorry if that sounds like the old guy “Get off my lawn take.”

I think the broadcast crew is YES. It’s also on the MLB Network, in addition to MLB.tv.

There seems to be a whole lot of “discomfort” going on during this year’s ST.

Whatever happened to “Hey kid, just walk it off!”

I guess a million bucks is what happened.

Last season, primarily at Double-A, today’s no. 8 and 9 batters for the #STLCards combined for 110 stolen bases with a 90.2% success rate – SS @MasynWinn and CF Mike Antico. For 2023, they are The Cardinal Nation’s no. 2 and no. 31 prospects, respectively.

Nice defensive plays by both today. Winn with an over the head basket catch and Antico with a very good diving catch to the end the 4th. Woodford now has 4 scoreless inning to start the game.
