July 10, 2023 at 3:04 pm #227517The MLB site says Quinn Mathews, our 3rd pick (4th round) is a college Sr., so that might be a cap saver pick.
July 10, 2023 at 3:21 pm #227520Is Savacool a pitcher or an outfielder? The caption says OF but the picture shows him pitching.
July 10, 2023 at 4:32 pm #227528Savacool had 0 PAs in college.
July 10, 2023 at 4:36 pm #227529Matthews threw 156 pitches in complete game in the NCAA tournament for Stanford….think the Stanford coach caught some flack for letting him throw that many….so they may want to be careful this year with him…..he was a reliever his first few years so he hasn’t thrown a ton of innings at least.
July 10, 2023 at 4:37 pm #227532Savocol is a pitcher from Univ. of Maryland
July 10, 2023 at 4:42 pm #227534The Lefthanded pitcher from Fresno State they took in the 8th round has some upside Xian Henderson… good athlete
July 10, 2023 at 4:44 pm #227535Not sure about there 5th round pick think he was a DH in college mostly, not a big fan of drafting DH’s only unless they can really mash

ParticipantReally impressed with the pitchers taken on day 2. High K rate. Always like to see a greater than one to one K rate per inning and good K/W rate.

July 10, 2023 at 5:33 pm #227542Haha!…This is from way back in this thread, but I have to to tip my cap and pay homage to Mr. Perkins for his comment that included the great baseball name of, “Wes Swackhammer”…With a name like that, you just know Big League pitchers were going to be careful with him…Heck, don’t even attempt work to Wes…Just hold up four fingers and put him on!
July 10, 2023 at 5:47 pm #227543Notice the focus on the outfield? Slot values of the picks used on the three OFs taken in rounds 1, 3 and 5 represent almost 75% of the #stlcards signing budget for rounds 1-10. More breakdown and detailed scouting reports on draft days 1-2 posted. (free) https://t.co/aEg5X6UOtB pic.twitter.com/uvxFNAxeMC

July 10, 2023 at 5:56 pm #227544Is that Eckstein?
July 10, 2023 at 6:04 pm #227545In the first 10 rounds (9 picks) the Cards have taken 2 college seniors, including the unranked guy in the 7th round. This seems extraordinary, but maybe it isn’t. What it should do is save considerable cap money. So they would be in good shape to sign a hard to sign HS candidate, who maybe has slipped a good deal due to signability problems. They haven’t taken any HSers so far. We just have to wait and see how the worm turns.
July 10, 2023 at 6:25 pm #227546Our scouting guru’s give quite a compliment to Worley, saying he might be the best pitcher we took. Injuries have plagued him though, hence the drop in his draft position.
We know that history all too well with Mr. Alex Reyes. But Worley is worth bringing on and seeing if he can stay healthy. Low risk, potentially high reward.

Participant5 pitchers and 4 outfielders. Good mix.
July 10, 2023 at 6:37 pm #227549We have really profiled power bats in recent drafts. With consistently picking towards the end of the rounds, it is tough to get the five star pitchers. But we seem to do a good job of getting arms with some ability and upside.
Mathews’ pitch counts is a little scary, but then Mike Marshall used to believe in high pitch counts as the way to build arm strength. And maybe that is true; just hope it does not weaken tendon resiliency.

ParticipantBicycle – The higher pitch counts sure didn’t bother the old time pitchers. They weren’t coddled.
July 10, 2023 at 7:03 pm #227553Blake/Brian – I really appreciate the great write-ups on these guys. It gives us an opportunity to understand a baseline of potential expectations. While we all realize the draft can be a total crapshoot, it’s nice to get some starting thoughts.
I expected lots of outfielders and pitchers so this hasn’t been too surprising thus far. But I was thinking we might lean a little more heavily into at least one true CF type player with tons of athleticism. But we stuck with power hitting corner outfielders who might be able to pass as a CF. I feel like that may have been the only miss thus far. The next 10 rounds will probably be more balanced – a few more pitchers (probably 4), a token catcher, a couple middle infielders, and at least 1 1B/3B. These guys in the next 10 usually end up as fillers but we may hit on one or two if we’re lucky.
Thanks again for putting all the effort into researching these guys!
July 10, 2023 at 7:29 pm #227555About a decade ago, for a few years we were drafting a ton of third basemen. Piscotty, Wisdom and Carson Kelly within the first 6 rounds one year. We always ended up either deciding they couldn’t play 3B, or couldn’t play at all, or somehow got rid of them after years of spinning our wheels. It was a collosal bust. The one thing that came of all that was trading Zack Cox to the Marlins for Edward Mujica, who saved 37 games for us in 2013.
July 10, 2023 at 7:41 pm #227557I forgot all about him. Just looked him up and he collected 50 saves in an 11 year career, all but 13 of those saves coming in ’13.
July 10, 2023 at 7:57 pm #227560Thank you for the appreciation, jnevel. It is a lot of work to do in a very short period of time. Because of that, from the afternoon into the evening, information was added in phases and typos were corrected. Expect the same tomorrow.
Regarding CF, Victor Scott has bypassed his new teammate Mike Antico as the best hope at the position. We will need to watch closely how he does at Double-A.
Regarding no high schoolers, I asked Flores about that earlier this evening. He had two answers. One was that they were close several times before the draft changed (I assume that meant the players were taken before their turn). Also and most importantly, he noted the Cards are in the bottom five in bonus pool money, leaving them with less ability to overpay to convince high schoolers to sign. He suggested I look back at prior drafts to see how many high schoolers other teams with bottom five money signed. (I imagine the number is very low.)
Regarding third base in the past, it seems to be forgotten that Carson Kelly was a key part of the package that fetched Goldschmidt. That is hardly a bust, but when all you swing is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
July 10, 2023 at 8:17 pm #227563Adding to Jnevel’s comments, I really enjoy the very insightful scouting reports on our draftees. You guys analyze the players’ approach to their craft, and their strengths and concerns very well, plus project what they could improve on and how that might make them a candidate for the big club at some point.
Really top quality reporting. For someone who does not follow the college game much, at least not until the CWS since baseball was dropped in the schools I went to (Wyoming and U of Colorado), it is a great resource and makes me look forward to seeing how these guy progress.
July 10, 2023 at 8:27 pm #227565Thank you, bikemike. Blake Newberry deserves the lion’s share of the praise. He has become a very good analyst and we are fortunate to have him. Good when it is recognized instead of criticized.

July 10, 2023 at 9:59 pm #227575I forgot all about him. Just looked him up and he collected 50 saves in an 11 year career, all but 13 of those saves coming in ’13.
Mujica came out of nowhere. We had a few closer types at the time. Motte, Rosenthal, Fernando Salas. I don’t remember what convergence of circumstances led to Mujica getting the job, but he flamed out just as fast. I can remeber the Marlins GM or owner thinking he’d robbed us, saying he got a potential starting third baseman for a 7th inning guy.
As to Carson Kelly, I don’t think that is accurate Brian. At the time of the trade Kelly had never done diddly. We found a position he could play and then brought him up for look three years in a row and he couldn’t stick. We just dumped him and some other bits and pieces for Goldy who had a year left on his contract and wasn’t going to re-sign with the DBs. It was only after Kelly had a breakout year for Arizona that he was talked about as a factor, or talked about at all.
