I hope this pick works out. One year of production is always iffy. They had the college pitcher available, but went with the high ceiling college outfielder. Does this signal a clear out of outfielders in the near future?

It doesn’t mean anything about the near future – as you figure Davis is 3-4 years away from a MLB roster.

Though I do think they should cut bait with Tyler O’Neill this offseason and sign a free agent outfielder.

OF, L/L, 6’1″, 216lbs. 14% K rate and walked more than he struck out. Nice. O SBs, so likely not real fast. Commentators said he’s a good defender.

    Chase Davis d.o.b. 12/5/2001
    Jordan Walker d.o.b. 5/22/2002

Just for reference. I like Davis’s swing. 43 BB, 40 K, 21 HR this season at Arizona. If he was a CF he would have been gone well before #21. He’s played some CF, but mostly LF and will be a LF in pro ball. MLB Network was comparing him to Carlos Gonzalez. Swing is very similar.

It means everything. I’ve done some scouting, and I’m always suspicious of players that have one year of track record. I do like some of the skills I saw on the videos, but it’s so hard to project an already 21 year old and no, he isn’t 3 or 4 years away. He’s got to be on the fast track as if it is 3 or 4 years he will be mid-20s, and that leaves very little room between prospect and not gonna make it. I suspect they see a quick rise through the system, and that’s very possible if he figured it out this year.

The folks that wrote this agree with my assessment, just saying.

The Cardinals passed on a high-end college pitcher(Hurston Waldrep) to take Davis. I am surprised.

    The Braves just took Waldrep.

I agree he’s likely to be a fast mover because he will likely handle A level play and pitching pretty well. We should find that out pretty soon. You never know how the upper levels will go, but it will not be a long wait to find out.

What percentage of college players make it to the big leagues in less than 3 years from when they were drafted?

That’s a good question LA. But whether a guy ends up in that percentage depends in part on what’s in his way. I think that is a factor that could play in, assuming he performs enough to push.

They chose him cause his name sounds like Crash Davis…It’s all about selling the tickets.

After reading about him and watching his videos he reminds me a bit of David Justice from the Braves of the 1990’s. I think we would all take that in a heartbeat. 🙂

Having a career like Justice from your #1 pick would be a fantastic outcome in any draft. Justice and JD Drew both got a lot of attention and it felt like they underachieved in some ways, yet they had very good careers with over 40 WAR each. Hopefully Davis reaches that level.

there are doubts about Davis in CF.

If his exit velo lights up the gun, trivialities like defensive utility don’t matter. See Walker.

Well it seems logical that we would want to have drafted a pitcher but a lot of times teams simply draft the best available player regardless of position because the draftees usually aren’t going to impact the big league club for a few years anyway and the theory is the draftee can always be traded for what you need if they are blocked.

Randy Flores’ media comments about Davis last night have been added to the free article on our home page. And do not miss Blake Newberry’s scouting report!

Waldrep had 57 walks in 101.2 innings, with 11 wild pitches and 9 HBP. WHIP of 1.40. That’s what might have scared the Cardinals off.

I was thinking by the end of the article Blake and Chase would be walking up the aisle under a shower of rice to live happily ever after.

it seems logical that we would want to have drafted a pitcher

Maybe their first round strategy was to draft what they thought they could successfully develop. That wouldn’t necessarily be a pitcher. Maybe drafting and developing something you can trade for a pitcher is the higher percentage play. Factor in your systems strengths and weaknesses.
