Not when we’re 12 games out at the break with no hope in sight.

Actually it’s only 11.5 back…And if you really want to bask in the sunshine, we’re only 11 out on the lost side! If that don’t make you feel like shiny, happy, people holding hands, nothing will…Haha!

Obviously a fast-track pitcher is our greatest need right now, but at 21 it was unlikely. I like this pick – a lot of athleticism and power. Great arm, although not the best in the speed department.

Then you have the intangible traits of high character and strong work ethic.

Oh, as a final plus, a super cool name; “Chase Davis”. Just sounds like a player, although you don’t want him to get too carried away with the name and “chase” pitches out of the zone. :-). But the report says he improved a lot on that between his sophomore and junior seasons.

Now get Jack Hurley OF (Virginia tech) if he is available in round 3.LH batter with speed ,some power and good contact.

Yeah, for some odd reason I formed the impression when I was still a young boy that baseball names were of vital importance and remnants of that impression have remained with me ever since. I suspect it’s not unlike rock and roll recording stars…I always though the name “Tommy Lawless” would serve well for the name of a front man for a heavy metal band…

For the heavy metal band, he would be even better served with a first name like Spike or Duke or Blaze or Stone. Tommy isn’t tough sounding enough!

Sounds like a name from a Grade B Western from the 1950`s

Haha!…Yeah, those are all good too, BW! At any rate, you almost knew we were in trouble when in ’12 they called up Chuckie Fick…The names will always count for something…

Reading up on Chase…I wonder where he slots into the TCN top 50? Perhaps in the Hjerpe-Bernal area. I could see arguments for him slotting before or after each of those guys.

“Hjerpe-Bernal area”…Isn’t that located somewhere in the Belgian Congo?

This comment while the draft was going on.

    Waldrep is still there.

He was right there for us….. he ranked higher and is a pitcher which the organization needs. They rolled the dice…. because that’s the new Cardinal way. 🙁 Woe is us.

As we do every year post-draft, Blake and I will slot in all the draft picks into this month’s prospect re-rankings. Should be fun as always. Bling will be able to calm down when Blake doesn’t put Davis as his #1… 😉

Names are indeed a nice cap to a guy’s legacy. One of the all timers is “Mickey Mantle”. The name sounds like a heroic character from a novel.

I still remember a blurb in the Sporting News years ago in the “Transactions” section that read something like, “The St. Louis Cardinals acquired outfielder Willie McGee from the New York Yankees for pitcher Bob Sykes.”

I had no idea who Willie McGee was, but thought the trade was good simply on names alone. “Willie McGee” sounds like a baseball player. “Bob Sykes” sounds like an auto mechanic. Sykes was a bit like Brett Cecil or Steven Matz for us. Lefty pitcher who did not do a lot. But then we were not on the hook for big paydays with him either.

That seems to place too much importance on rankings. That would be fine if the teams don’t pre-scout players and vet them themselves. Anyway, pre-draft, MLB Pipeline had the two ranked very closely – 19th vs. 22nd.

I also wish there had been a pitcher for them to take there, but I am sure the Cardinals are comfortable with their choice. Clearly, they had reasons to take one over the other. Only time will tell how it works out but I doubt the small difference in pre-draft ranking will prove to be important.

No question about the name Mickey Mantle. The name spells a baseball, a bat, and a mitt.

    Waldrop can’t throw strikes. Pass

What we need is a player named Dirk.

I don’t understand the Travis Honeyman pick. He plays in the Northeast, where they haven’t much luck in the past because of the short season and small stat sample size. His slash is
.304/.383/.534/.917. He only hit 6 home runs and stole only 10 bases. Very modest production. Especially for a 3rd round pick. Disappointing.

I lost confidence in players names when Wes Swackhammer never amounted to a hill of beans. And when we drafted that guy, I want to say his name was Ben Diggins, and he didn’t sign, and ended up with the Dodgers I think. I was sure he was going to burn us and I don’t think he ever even made the big leagues

    Good 4th round pick.

    At Stanford –

    10-4
    ERA – .375
    IP – 124.2
    H – 116
    K – 158
    W – 40
    BAA – .245

    Quality person.

Uundestand, Brian, but I don’t see their stat lines, # of homers, # of Stolen bases, # of Ks in innings pitched, etc.

Just trying to fill in and be helpful.

Honeyman was considered a possible first rounder before being injured this Spring. Might me a nice pick there.
