Rosenthal emerged at the tail end of that ’13 season to take over the 9th inning duties from Mujica and continued on into the post-season as the Cardinal closer. I’m sure you recall he was one of the best 9th inning guys in the NL for the next couple of regular seasons until he too flamed out. At any rate, I had forgotten about Mujica and he was a little like Salas in ’11. Salas saved the Cardinals for a good portion of that ’11 season after Ryan Franklin imploded during the first couple of months and they finally gave up on him. Salas had quite a few saves before Motte emerged as the closer at the tail end of that year. Closers are a funny breed in the sense that it seems like very few of them realize success for a substantial amount of time and once they hit the proverbial wall, they seem to almost always hit it hard.

It seems like most relievers are like that though. Somebody will be good for a couple years and them just go off a cliff. Very few are solid for long stretch. Mo has been burned with multi year deals to relivers a few times. There is no possible way he will sign Hicks unless he’d go for a one year, which he won’t.

In the past, we have had a pretty endless suppy of servicable relievers to call up, but right now the shelves are bare. We’ve got a motley bunch on the roster and it will be the same next year. Its a path to the show that is wide open.

Bling- I think that. you are remembering what was happening with Kelly incorrectly. He didn’t hit much at first but then switched to catcher and upped his value. He hit well at Springfield and Memphis as well as becoming a Top 5 Cardinal prospect. He never stuck at the Big League level with us because Molina was our catcher. When he was traded we knew he was an outstanding and athletic catcher who was blocked in St. Louis.

Another name to toss in that 2011 bullpen was Eduardo Sanchez. I think he and Salas came up about the same time but Sanchez was considered the better prospect. He had great numbers in the minors and a good slider if I recall correctly. He lost effectiveness in 2012 and got claimed off waivers by the Cubs and was out of affiliated ranks shortly after.

Sanchez was a very slight tiny guy. I think eventually he hurt his shoulder and was never the same.

As to Carson Kelly, I don’t think that is accurate Brian. At the time of the trade Kelly had never done diddly. We found a position he could play and then brought him up for look three years in a row and he couldn’t stick. We just dumped him and some other bits and pieces for Goldy who had a year left on his contract and wasn’t going to re-sign with the DBs. It was only after Kelly had a breakout year for Arizona that he was talked about as a factor, or talked about at all.

Your recollection is simply not accurate. Kelly was a consensus top 100 prospect nationally in both 2017 and 2018 as the top hitting prospect in the Cardinals system. He was ranked ahead of O’Neill, Knizner, Bader, Garcia, Arozarena, etc.

As already stated, the Cards got a great return from Kelly as a cornerstone of the Goldschmidt trade so he was not a “colossal bust”.

A few years after Kelly we began stockpiling even more 3B. Montero, Nunez, Gorman, Walker, etc…. While it may seem odd to stockpile several players of the same position it usually works itself out either by position change or as trade bait.

For those in the know how does Matthews compare to someone like Liberatore or Thompson? Higher ceiling or about the same?

He missed some time due to injury this spring but I couldn’t find out details.

I thought the new signing limit for rounds 11-20 was $150,000, not $125,000 as mentioned in the day 3 draft guide in TCN. Am I misinformed?

Hmmm, a power hitting first baseman in the 13th round. I like it. William Sullivan to the HALL!

Reading the recap on Dakota Harris he sounds a lot like Tommy Edman minus the speed.

I have seen Richardson play in person. Very good looking player. I am surprised he was still available this late in the draft.

This was the game I saw him in person but he had a very good year, not just one good game.

Thompson had the higher ceiling, but never had results in college. Matthews has results and a better pitch mix. He had the second-most strikeouts in college this year, after Skenes.

I’m assuming the pitchers they’re serious about won’t see any game action this year.

The LSU commit is a Hail Mary according to Flores. The Cards came into it with a smaller pool because of no second round pool money. But they also don’t have to spend anything signing that pick. They should save something signing all the seniors, so there should be some amount of dry powder.
