It matters but not for 3-4 years. It’s not like the NFL or NBA where you can go draft immediate help.
This is for 2026 to 2029.

Unless Waldrep falls that far, I don’t think there are going to be any pitchers worth taking at that spot.
I’ve looked at some of the mocks and didn’t see Ty Floyd. He almost was as impressive as his teammate Paul Skenes. Did anyone else see game 2 of the CWS this year?
I would do what the Angels did a couple of years ago and draft 20 pitchers. The law of averages would say that at least one of them should amount to something. This organization is desperate for pitching.
By the way, Hudson was a pretty good pitcher for us before the injury and McGreevy shows some promise to me.
In baseball you don’t get guys like Wembayama, who can turn a franchise around. You would think they will load up on arms, but then if you get a chance at a top position prospect then you gotta go for it.

– ERA of 4.35 vs ERA of 1.69
– 120 strikeouts vs 209
– 37 walks vs 20
– MLB has a second round grade on him vs #2 overall for Skenes
– Future Stars series has a 4th round grade on him vs #3 overallI would do what the Angels did a couple of years ago and draft 20 pitchers.
The year to do that was several years ago, when everybody could see we had no pitchers in the minors.
Now, we have neither hitters at the lower levels nor pitchers at the upper levels.
Looking at this draft, it seems the value in the first round for the Cardinals will be a hitter, and the value in rounds 3 & 4 will likely be with pitchers.
In our position the best player available. Whoever it is can’t miss. Think there’s a lot of pressure on our scouts to get some stuff done.
And yeah it might be 3 years down the road but a lot of the teams in our division have stepped up via minors. It will be a highly competitive division IMO looking ahead. Young talented division with potential.
You guys are probably right. The year to try to draft an elite pitcher will be 2024 when we will have a top 5 or top 10 pick.
The Cards had the advantage of the competitive balance pick for many years, and I think they generally used it well. Without it going forward, they’re going to have to hit on more of their first and second rounders to make up the gap.
Drafting kids from cold weather states where the amateur baseball season is short has not worked out well for them. They busted on Plummer and Fletcher and Baez appears to be headed in the same direction.

That is going to take more time than we’d like. Maybe not everyone knows that the Cardinals forfeited their second-rounder this year as part of the signing of Willson Contreras. That means they have just one pick during the first 89 selections. That #1 pick (21st overall) had better be good!
As has been said, the top 4 college pitchers in the draft (Skenes, Dollander, Lowder, and Waldrep) may well be taken by the time it gets to the Cardinals. Then there’s a big gap to the next college pitcher. If all four are taken, it will probably spur drafting the best college bat available. Those that might be available at that point are –

Mocks are good time fillers, but after the first handful of picks, it seems like they are mostly off. There are so many variables.
It would be a fun exercise to compile the various mock picks at #21 and see afterward if any of them hit the mark.
Stepping back, I know nothing special about this draft pool. But given the state of the Cardinals, it is hard for me to fathom them waiting until overall pick #90 or later to try to get more pitching help.
Flores is the lone bright spot of this front office.
