If I am a high schooler going to college, it got more competitive to get a D1 scholarship.
If I am a high schooler hoping to get drafted and don’t, I am going the juco route so I am not locked out of the draft for three years.
If I am a college junior, the fewer rounds and less money make it less likely I am going to get drafted. And if not, then my chance for a big bonus went out the window. As a senior next year, I have no leverage. So do I take the $20K offer now?Easy to see how it helps D1 schools. If the Draft was 10 Rds or more the number of good players available next year would be less. I am a season ticket holder at South Carolina…we have 20 signees and potentially 32 returners for the 35 roster spots. The NCAA needs to help the Coach’s out for one year. There obviously will be attrition

The way I understand it is that the 1-1 draft choice is still more or less entitled to receive $7M or more as a signing bonus, but the MLB club only has to pay $100,000 of it in 2020 and owe the balance to the player to be paid whenever. I suspect that the MLB clubs will not be in the mood to take on much additional debt, even the relatively small amount that would be owed to a draft choice, given the uncertain future that we all face. The end result would seem to be that there will be more high draft choices than usual that won’t sign because they are not being offered the amount of money that they think they are entitled to.
My prediction is the round 4 and 5 guys will not be taken unless they sign far below slot to free up extra money for the earlier picks. Teams are not going to miss out signing these picks because they have so few.
This is so beyond stupid with just 5 draft picks, i am sorry but this idiot commish we have now is going to completely END this game soon!
Another perspective on the ’20 draft.
The big college baseball programs, mostly in the SEC, are going to do very well with a shorter MLB draft. Here at Arkansas our program draws huge crowds, bigger than most AAA teams. Money is not a big issue although if fans are not allowed back at sporting events this year money could become an issue.
We are expecting our top three players to get drafted (Kjerstand, Martin, and Opitz) but most of the others who would have been drafted will return to school. That is big news. The $20k isn’t a very big carrot at all. We are going to have a beast of a team next season and should be on track for another visit to Omaha.

This is true…the problem for SEC teams is that they will be better and they play each other 30 times.

Boras isn’t the only agent barking. As highlighted in the story I posted above agent Jeff Berry said that if owners are so financially challenged that they have to strip the draft down this much then they should sell their teams to someone who has the money to operate.
This is obviously hyperbole but a stinging accusation nonetheless.
