June 25, 2020 at 7:04 pm #131481This afternoon, the #stlcards announced the signing of second-round draft pick Tink Hence, taken 63rd overall. The 17-year old right-handed pitcher is the sixth of seven selections to come to terms with the club. (free) https://t.co/b2ZeZZAx3i pic.twitter.com/MsHBXq2d0M

June 25, 2020 at 7:20 pm #131488I’ve been checking here. I’ve been checking MLBTR.com. I’ve been checking the radio. And I checked the 6 o’clock news on TV. Guess what? I heard it here first. Thanks BW.
This is one exciting draft class. It’ll be fun watching them move along through the system. It will be fun seeing who gets to the bigs first. Now if only that future power hitting second baseman would stand up and show himself
June 25, 2020 at 7:28 pm #131493Real impressed what the Cardinals have done here. In reading about the Walker kid, he looks be a great first pick. Sounds like he will start out as a third baseman, but with that height I envision him moving across to first base at some point.

ParticipantMudville – how about a middle infielder at the highest minor league levels in our system who hit 17 home runs in only 118 games at Memphis last season. He seems to be overlooked for some reason. He can play 2B.
June 25, 2020 at 9:36 pm #131502Last year looks like a breakout year for Edmundo Sosa. I don’t understand why he hasn’t gotten a lot more attention. He has always been an excellent fielder. I would like to see him get a few starts at the major league level so we could get a better feel for what he’s got. I remember thinking at ST that Sosa looked like he deserved to go north with the team.

ParticipantI saw him in 3 games at Spring Training and he seemed to fit right in with the major leaguers.
June 26, 2020 at 7:59 am #131517Sosa’s biggest problem was the signing of Brad Miller. Nothing he can do about that except play hard and be ready.

June 26, 2020 at 10:11 am #131531Supplemental 2nd-rder Tink Hence's bonus from @Cardinals is $1,115,000 (slot 63 value = $1,076,300). Arkansas HS RHP, quick-twitch guy with fast arm, fastball to 96 mph, flashes plus slider, feel for changeup, sound delivery. Arkansas recruit. @MLBDraft

ParticipantThat should just about do it.
June 26, 2020 at 1:15 pm #131548I guess the only thing we are still curious about is the $ figure for Bedell.
Really surprised me that Hence only got $38,700 over slot.
June 26, 2020 at 2:10 pm #131562Still, $1,115,000 is a hell of a lot of money to hand over to a 17 year old boy who may, or may not, become a big league ballplayer. The Cardinals must have some kind of system that determines how much they should have to fork over for any given player. That system must be legitimate since every player that they drafted signed for what they offered him.

ParticipantMud – Don’t you think there were some behind the scenes negotiations?
June 26, 2020 at 6:20 pm #131568I think some kind of dialogue occurred before and after the draft. I don’t know if there was any give and take during those talks. Negotiations usually take a lot of time. But here we are only two weeks after the draft and everybody is signed. I was just speculating on how that could happen as smoothly as it did. That’s all. I’d say that years of experience with the draft had something to do with it.

ParticipantCards are indeed good at signing draft picks. I can’t remember any high picks over the years that they failed to sign.
June 26, 2020 at 8:07 pm #131570That is because the scouts do their job upfront…you don’t draft players that you can’t sign.

The last was pitcher Trevor Megill, third round, 2014.
However, they selected Jordan Hicks with the comp pick the next year, so that worked out mighty fine for the Cardinals.
June 26, 2020 at 8:27 pm #131573Ian Bedell is officially a member of the #STLCards organization!
We have agreed to terms with our 4th round pick. https://t.co/A3NQ353n45

stlcard25Participant4th-rder Ian Bedell signs with @Cardinals for $800k (slot 122 value = $469k). Missouri RHP, huge summer in Cape Cod League, pounds the zone with a variety of pitches: two- & four-seam fastballs, changeups, curveballs & cutters. @MLBDraft

June 26, 2020 at 8:56 pm #131580Regarding the 2B of the future discussion, I always thought it was a guarantee that Wong would be the starting 2B in 2021. It would be foolish not to pick up his option, but if Sosa and Edman hit in the 60 games and playoffs, Wong could be a very valuable trade chip for them.
Since “baseball doesn’t make much money”, I could see DeWitt looking to trim the payroll down as much as possible in 2021 and that would be one area they could do that and not lose a ton going from Wong to Edman/Sosa. Wong is the best defensive 2B in MLB, but they wouldn’t lose all that much with the bat and it would save him $10M+ AND likely bring back a high level prospect.
After thinking through further while writing this, on top of hearing Dewitts comments in that interview, not to mention what will be a crazy shortened season, I could actually see this happening before the 2020 season starts…. not advocating for it at all, but could definitely see it with Edman, Sosa and Miller(who I always forget about, but could be a sneaky great signing).
