With DeJong as our possible third baseman of the future, and with 21 year old Evan Mendoz looking pretty good at Memphis, and 19 year old Elehuris Montero looking especially good at Peoria, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gorman moved to 1B sooner rather than later. I thought for sure they’d take a pitcher in the first round, but I like this pick.
After reading Lance McClanahan’s scouting report, I’m surprised that he has still not been taken. I’m guessing the scouts/organizations are looking at him as a late inning reliever rather than a starter.
Par for the course we take an almost MLB ready arm in Griffin Roberts from Wake Forest.
Gammons and another guy have already said if we need an arm in September that this kid has wipeout stuff as a closer and we could use him if needed and was the best closer in the Cape Cod league.
Really like the first pick they made but not as high in second pick especially if he is used as a RP instead of a SP
Roberts looks like he has s lot of upside. Much like a lot of their picks, they will try and keep him as a starter.
Gorman is everything this team lacks – Corner defense, LH bat, ++ power. Too bad he is probably 4 years away!
He just turned to a starter this year. He didn’t miss a beat but some project him as a closer with plus stuff.
For those who are more in the know, how do the first three picks look in terms of signing versus the slot value?
Just looking at the profiles, it may seem like Gorman will be slot or over while Roberts and Baker may sign for under slot? They are juniors but the injury probably won’t help Baker at least.
As for today, it’d be nice if Knight is available in the third round at the Cards’ pick. If the money is there, Rocker or De Sadas would be luxury picks.
Highly unlikely that Gorman is going to sign under slot, almost no chance at all…other 2 maybe since both seemed to be reaches where we took them, especially the hitter from TCU….with all his injury history that they were talking about not sure on that pick at all…

I think the Cardinals just don’t like Knight, otherwise they would have taken him at 75…
Rocker reportedly wants Top 10 money to sign, so I don’t see anybody drafting him at this point.
I would guess Gorman will be around slot value or slightly over. They should be able to get Roberts and Baker for less than slot.
The one thing about taking Gorman that I like versus their previous high school first rounders, is at least his best tool is not his ability to draw walks! Hopefully, they’ve learned their lesson on using that as a criteria for drafting high schoolers in the first round.
I don’t understand passing on Knight either. Oh well.
Most of the talking heads on MLB are gushing about the Cards first two picks. They couldn’t believe Gorman was still available at 19, and has been mentioned on here already, some are saying that Roberts could actually contribute in our pen THIS year. We shall see.
As for Gorman, what is his comp? I hope it isn’t Joey Gallo which is an old fashioned line of .190 40 85.

2014 (Weaver, Flaherty, and Gomber) was really productive and 2015 (Bader, Hicks, and DeJong) looks like a massive haul, including Woodford and Helsley too. 2016 has Hudson and Knizner already knocking on the door.
I don’t see the same pressure to produce on Gorman that you do. Just because the 1st pick in the draft doesn’t pan out wouldn’t mean our draft was unsuccessful or even that the 1st round was unsuccessful.

The Cardinals have done a terrible job of drafting HS bats in the first round.
Thanks Card2016… If we had better drafts, especially ’17 our lower affiliates would not be void of talent. We lost two last year (Fowler/Astros), ’16 Perez-Carlson-Hudson, ’17 Plummer and Woodford. The only one playing up to his potential as a top draftee is Hudson, and he is at AAA.

Woodford is still completely on track and doing well. I’m not sure I get your point. We still did GET future star-type players in the 2015 draft in Bader, Hicks, and DeJong.

Did you completely overlook Dakota Hudson?
Perez and Carlson (and Denton to a degree) are very young as well. I really dislike putting a ‘bust’ label on anyone like that yet. Case-in-point: Oscar Mercado and Carson Kelly.
