With the count full, Reynolds first went fishing high and fouled it off and then went deep fishing low and struck out….Quinn needed that. The next batter up (Cruz) also goes down on strikes…..Quinn’s 7th K victim on the evening. Matthews looking like he could go another 6 frames. Gonzalez singles to left and they’re coming to get him. I think I would have gone one more batter with him.

Baez did not look good in that at bat leading off the Cardinal 6th. No problemo…..he’ll go deep in his next at bat in the 8th.
Next to re-inking Paul DeJong, I think Mikolas might be the last ex-Cardinal Bloom would bring back, Bling……oh shoot I forgot the Packers game is on tonight.
Cardinals up 3to 1here in 8th. The one isnt a surprise, pirates almost always suck against catdinals, i figured we might have more runs though. Anything less than a sweep of the pirates this weekend would be a disappountment.

I’m with you on this one Bling. Baez, while a very average outfielder, has been an outfielder his whole career. Most of Fermin’s outfield experience has been this season. So it’s weird that he would be a defensive upgrade to Baez.
We can forget sometimes that this game is played by young men with big dreams.

Weird and concerning. I think it may be an arm strength issue with Baez. If that is the case, it is not likely to improve much.
It would be all the more weird and concerning if, and I emphasize if, his arm is the issue, because he played a lot of CF in AAA, and I don’t remember ever hearing a word about his arm out there. When a prospect is hitting enough, nobody pays any attention to anything else, I guess. It would also point up the big step between AAA and MLB if an arm that passes without comment in CF in AAA is getting pulled out of LF in MLB.
It didn’t look like much a couple times today. Saturday. The Pirates didn’t seem worried about it either judging from them not hesitating to have the runner go over to third. Fermin has a good arm. He handles the throws from the left side of the infield well enough. Left field is where the weak outfield arms go. I’m willing to wait and see though. I’m just flustered by him getting pulled for a defensive replacement. I admit it could be two left feet, hands of stone, lack of hustle, whatever. He’s been an outfielder all along though, as was said, so he should know the drill and be competent enough to not get pulled for a UT with a few games of OF experience.
I didn’t watch the game and didn’t see what happened. I like Baez and he generally has a decent arm.
I will say from watching him play in the minor leagues, that he does at times have an attention issue. I have seen him play in the outfield like he isn’t concentrating the way he should. I can’t say it is a chronic issue as I have not watched him enough to draw that conclusion. It has been mostly a fielding issue and not a throwing one.
I would assume the coaches will address this if they think it is a problem.
Thanks for the eyewitness input. They fixed Walker’s D so there is hope. Now, if he can hit over .200.
Baez’ OPS+ is 86. That is slightly higher than Winn and equal to Jordan. Church is right there at 87. At least Baez has played in just 14 games.
Throw Pages/Crooks in and you have five of the nine spots in the batting order covered by below average MLB hitters. (And putting in Fermin/Gorman/Urias in there instead of Jordan doesn’t help.)
When your lineup is predominated by below average hitters, it seems like playing .500 ball is doing well.
