Thats kind of a rough one. Obrien didnt seem his usual self but you figured he had enough leeway to hold it. But not the case.

    Wow – unbelievable.

I feel like this happens to the Cardinals a lot more than they pull off this kind of comeback victory.

What an absolutely inexcusable hideous collapse by O’Brien.

O’Brien had been really good the last couple of weeks. He just could not get the breaking ball over the plate and the Phillies made him make some mistakes. Tough loss against a red hot team.

We could wait for better times or we could bulldoze it all into the river and put up a parking lot.

You think this was Schwarbers payback for the Hkme Run Derby? Lol

And the Phillies not only get closer to the Braves but the Cubs in the Wild Card 4 seed.

Has anyone given any thought to dangling Herrera out there in the market, when that becomes possible, to see what, if anything, valuable he might bring? We already possess plenty of .240 hitters, many of whom also can manage competent defense, and no shortage of catchers waiting in the wings. Just a thought as an alternative to waiting a few years for a potential big star to emerge from the farm.

The trade deadline has passed. Might be worth pursuing in the off-season. But they’d have to move fast before the lockout.

The looming lockout sure is inconvenient. Besides sorting the catcher pipeline, they will need to move some upper levels pitchers to make way for a seemingly rich crop of others moving up.

I dunno about that. They sure don’t have pitching depth now. And they’ll have injuries next year too. I prefer to hope the starters that don’t make the grade replace the castoffs in the pen. And they will probably have more value to StL than to another org, anyway.

Has anyone given any thought to dangling Herrera

Herrera’s bat has dropped off very significantly from last year, he isn’t going to get better behind the plate, he has no real prospects of manning another position, and he will make arb money starting next season. That is an unappealing combination, for the Cardinals and for anyone else.

Bernal and Rodriguez can’t both be the starting catcher in Memphis next year. And if Rodriguez doesn’t open there, he will be there soon enough. Something has to give.

It does seem that Herrera is getting in to “Gorman” territory as far as a guy that is not looking like his future is here. Obviously he’s not a bust to the same degree as Nolan II, but his primary defensive position has plenty of other options, and his main value, offense, has not been there all year.

But the powers that be will need to get an agreement together first. Let’s hope intelligence rules the day and they pull things together relatively quick so we can move on to purely baseball matters.

I think the concern over Herrera’s offense is overblown. He hasn’t hit as well as previous seasons but his offensive output is still above average.

His strikeout rate is 18% and he walks at a 10% rate. He is not in any way comparable to Nolan Gorman.

Every player has off years. We put up with several of them from Jordan Walker. I don’t think bailing on Herrera is warranted.

He shouldn’t be catching, I don’t disagree with that. Burleson can’t hit lefties, and I don’t know why Herrera can’t platoon with him at first base. Blaze Jordan’s below average offense isn’t worth having him there.

I think burleson has beem hitting lefties just fine, prob better than herrera. Herrera is an average hitter, hundreds just like him in the league. But i know some love him, but we have let go of far better players than him.

If Herrera is not a catcher then he’s a DH and only a passable one.

I think he’s athletic enough to play in the OF and he could certainly play 1B.

I’m not bothered if they keep him or if they trade him – just not at Catcher.

Herrera won’t be a min wage guy after this season. Our Bill will have that in mind.

Burleson has a .548 OPS against LHP vs a .979 OPS against RHP. Those are drastic splits.

Burleson is going to make bank in arbitration too and he can only reliably hit RHP. That screams platoon.

Herrera has played over 60 innings at 1B in Winter Ball. It wouldn’t take long for him to get up to speed there. Wilson Contreras did it fast with no prior experience.

There is no good reason to bail on Herrera, especially so because he does not have platoon splits like Burleson.

I looked at JJ’s stats, figuring he plays virtually every day. He has 202 PAs vs LHP and we are 132 games in. At that rate, he will have 250 PAs vs LHP for the year. So a reasonable rough ball park estimate would be Herrera gets 250 PAs if he platoons. Looking just at LHSPs JJ has 156 PAs to date, Herrera platooning would likely stay in games he started even when RH relivers come in, at least mostly, so I stick with 250 PAs as a reasonable guess.

That’s twice in six days that the Redbirds had the lead with two outs in the 9th and lost the game.

I hope O’Brien isn’t going to make a habit of this.

Then again, Bruce Sutter did blow around 8-9 saves in his big 1984 season.

Meltdowns hurt. Losing a 1 run lead in the 9th is one thing, but coughing up a 4 run advantage is pretty darn lame. On the plus side, once again our young team fared pretty well against an elite pitcher. They had Sanchez beat and let it slip away. I’ll have to go back and check this year’s box scores, but other than the 2 games vs Mizorowski, I think we’ve fared pretty darn well vs opposition Aces.
