What team would be interested in acquiring Arenado? And would pay at least half his remaining contract salary. When Edman returns, Edman to 2B and Gorman to 3B would be some OK moves. Hopefully, the Cardinals could obtain some kind of pitching help for Arenado.
The Cardinals are not going to trade Arenado or any other starter as long as they are in the playoff hunt, which they currently are.
Yeah, as it stands now the Cardinals will be buyers, or perhaps mostly “stand patters” in late July. They won’t move a prime part of their roster, not even free agent bound Goldschmidt, nor Arenado if they are in the post season hunt.
Gorman is down to .193, with an OPS under .700. Man, and it looked like he was figuring it out a few weeks ago. I really like the guy and what he can bring, but it’s frustrating that he has so much swing and miss. If he would just make better contact I would be real optimistic. He’s still young, and I hope he can put it together. But so far he’s that glass half empty definition of “potential”, the one that goes, “potential means you haven’t done it yet”.
He’s been a disappointment. No question about it. And he’s beginning to take on the look of a hitter that’s struggling both in the box and in his melon.
The Athletic is running a really good series on the lack of offense in MLB. Part 2 looks at pitching orgs emphasizimg stuff and employing technology and even biomechanics to improve their pitchers. Who are the teams they mention throughout the article for adopting these changes? Guardians, Dodgers, Astros, Rays, Brewers, Cubs, Twins. Every one of those teams has been producing quality MLB pitchers at an above average rate, so clearly what they are doing is working. The Padres, Royals, Orioles, and Mets are orgs recently joining in with biomechanics labs.
I’ve only caught up to Part 2, but a very good and very detailed series of articles.
Hope that Burleson doesn’t get injured and out of the lineup for an extended period of time. Same with Donovan. Those two are winning type ball players.
Johnny’s not going to offer Alec anything until at least after the end of the ’25 season at which point Johnny will lowball him…Haha!
Shady-im going by memory here-Edman was a lot higher war player than Burleson. But if Burleson stays healthy and continues to increase his production and power numberst, he may eclipse Edman. But the answer is of course you extend him.
If an extension doesn’t extend a players club control, it is a stupid, unnecessary risk, that still may end in disaster. Winn, Burly, Walker, Carlson, etc, the player name doesn’t matter.
Re: Edman (so called) extension
Mo went year to year with Edman thru his THREE pre-arb seasons. He missed super2 by days, and agreed to a 4.2mil arb1 contract, avoiding arbitration.
The next January Mo bought out his final two arb seasons for 7mil and 9.5mil, Mo’s offer. Edman had submitted 6.95mil, the club 6.5mil, and he was guaranteed 7mil. No savings there for this season.
Edman is now guaranteed to draw 9.5mil for next season. But, if he has to go thru the arb process instead, with all this missed playing time, he’s looking at a freeze or very slight raise, IF he plays this season.
None of these figures are budget breaking, but what did Mo gain by buying up Edmans arb years that were already under club control? We didn’t get any extra seasons of Edmans club control.
How about “certainty” of his salary”? That’s a crock too. We gained nothing but guaranteeing a salary that would otherwise have been less, or in the same ballpark.
Hypothetically – if Edman had been healthy and put up a solid Edman like year, the arbitration amount for next season probably would have been $10-$12 million. That would have netted the team an overall savings of a couple million dollars.
I look at it as not much gained by the player or team in these types of deals. The team may end up overpaying a little or the player may end up losing out on a little. In this case, the team probably will lose $3-5 million. It’s not disastrous. But it could have been money better spent elsewhere. The longer extensions are the ones with much larger risks like what the team did with DeJong or the Braves have done with a bunch of their players. Those could see-saw one way or the other quite a bit.
With Edman and Noot both looking like durability risks, and Carlson looking more like a corner/4th OF, it makes sense to think about Siani beyond a fill in guy. His BA for June is .273. So there might be something to work with. He’s only taken one walk all month and hasn’t shown he can hit lefties, so there’s work to be done. A rangy gold glove in CF adds value, especially if one or both corners are not great defenders. Potentially, it could make a Burleson and Walker combo doable.
I think Siani could be more than a fill in guy. He is the everyday CF in my book until proven otherwise. His defense is very elite, good baserunner, and the offense is starting to pick up. He has been a very valuable player for us this year.
He is currently 2nd in all of MLB in outs above average.
