Walker put up a .787 ops last season over 465 PA’s. Burly is at .787 over 252 PA’s (2024). I’m hesitant with these breakouts, and that includes Winn.

I like proven batting early, but am willing to bat Winn second. Winn does have SB potential at leadoff, but I’d prefer his hit and run skills advance Donny to 3B, before Winn steals 2B.

KCB, I do not think it is settled that Burleson will be everyday once Noot and Walker are on the active roster. It is not even settled that he will stay hot.

O’Noot is injured again and Walker is in AAA. I’m pretty happy Burleson has stepped up. But you go ahead and continue with whatever your problem with him is. I put the odds at being a lot better for Burleson to keep hitting than O’Noot staying healthy.

Its silly we are forced to consider Burly and Walker as outfielders, but necessity has come front and center.

I used to have Donovan and Burly about the same on corner OF, but Donny is improving, and Burly has dropped a few feathers from his cap recently.

Burly is good enough if he hits enough. One of the extra outfielders needs to be a late inning defensive replacement. Walker and Burleson and two late inning defensive replacements is silly.

I agree 100% JJ. And I agree with you Bling. Burleson has to hit well above average to play every day. Not only that, he had to improve his power numbers. He’s done that. As long as that continues, he’s going to play every day somewhere. We have some good problems. We don’t have near enough at bats if everybody gets back and produces. Don’t forget about Carlson, either. Everybody’s whipping boy is coming to life. Trade deadline should be interesting.

This is probably the last year we will see Burly starting in the OF. He very well could be the starting 1B next year.

Burlys splits would give Willson just enough reason to play some 1B as his platoon partner.

100% agree. I think they need a RH option to pair with him though that can DH some too, something like a RH Carpenter. Veteran player who’s OK splitting time at 1B and getting some time at DH.

If Burleson keeps hitting like he’s been lately. He won’t be platooned.

It doesn’t really matter that much. Right now, Ollie really seems to want Burly’s bat in the lineup. I believe Burly has “jacked” some HRs off lefties.

Back in late March I didn’t at all think Burleson would get more than a look or two at LHP’ing. I was way wrong about that. I didn’t even bother to look at his splits because they don’t really matter at the present moment. The way he’s swinging the bat, it’s my view that there’s no way you could justify platooning him right now. Obviously that could change, but his bat has to be in the lineup for every game until it cools off.

Good points JJ about Burly’s season numbers compared against Noot and Donovan’s career numbers and Walker’s season last year (although offense is down in general this year). I am very thankful Burly’s bat has been above average so far this season, but I wouldn’t be penciling him in as a perennial All Star like some people are. I am hopeful he can keep up the power he has been showing this year as he desperately needs it to provide positive value with a 4-5% walk rate and very bad OF defense. Out of all 127 qualified OFs, Burly is the 15th worst by OAA. Thankfully he has had Siani who is #3 in all positions for OAA to cover him and make the OF defense not look bad overall. I am getting more and more confident of Burly potentially being able to be the 1B/DH next year, but a lot can happen in the 2nd half of the season. His bat really needs to keep it up as a 127 wRC+ is slightly above average for a 1B, but obviously the expectations are high offensively for 1B.

Regarding Walker’s defense, he was actually average by all metrics his limited time this year and the eye test also showed he looked much better out there. Walker is very athletic and once he starts getting comfortable in the OF, he should be able to be above average defensively for a RF. He needs to stick with it in AAA though for the mean time and hopefully the swing adjustments work well over more time and he can start lifting the ball more.

ATM, I’m delighted about both Winn’s and Burleson’s current progress. Winn’s was more expected than Burleson’s. I’ve lauded Burly’s potential for a long, long time. I’ve compared him, potentially, to Votto (without the walk %). But as a pure hitter. Recently, I saw a poster comp Burly to Soto (without the walks). That’s some real praise. I guess time will tell.

Not even close. They are both age 25.

Soto has accumulated 32.7 WAR in his career. Burleson has accumulated 0.7.

Soto has a 1.006 OPS, Burleson has a .798 OPS.

Well, Soto’s primary claim to fame may be that he’s sandwiched right smack dab between Joe Jackson and Mickey Mantle at number 19 on the all-time career OBP leaders. That’s right, he’s only 25 years of age and has accumulated enough career PA’s to qualify for being included on that all-time career OBP list. That esteemed list includes names like Williams, Ruth and McGraw at numbers 1 thru 3. That’s pretty impressive. I like Burleson, but…Haha!

Votto and Soto are the worst comps you could pick for Burly. Their offensive games are completely different as Votto and Soto are defined by their plate discipline. Like LACardFan said, Soto and Burly are the same age as well, but Soto is playing in his 7th full time season and looks like a sure fire HOFer.

Looking around, the best comp I can find for Burly is Yuli Gurriel. Same 1B type player with low walk rates, low strikeout rates, and can hit for average with pop sometimes.

One thing is obvious, Burleson can fricken’ hit. Much like Votto could and Soto can. Burly usually takes very competitive ABs against just about anybody. Much like Votto did and Soto does. Posters need to realize that underestimating Burleson usually doesn’t turn out too good for them.

Shady, just giving you a hard time here as Burly is hitting well. But Soto’s worst season in his career he posted a wRC+ of 143 (meaning 43% better than average) as a 20 year old. Burly’s at a 127 wRC+ right now as a 25 year old. That 16 point difference is very large and that is compared against Soto’s worst year. Votto had a career 145 wRC+. Just typing that out makes me realize how ridiculously good Soto is as his worst year so far is as good as a future HOF Votto on average, although this does count Votto’s old age years as well.

Dewitt delivering a nice $500 million contract to Soto would surely help fix the Cardinals. Soto probably has another 6 or so years of prime left and will still only be 31 after those 6 years. If Soto doesn’t end up with major injury issues or decides to retire to pursue other passions, he will likely be towards the top of the record books in many counting stats. He got such an early start at 19 and has been so consistently great.

Realistically I don’t see Soto signing in STL or Dewitt offering that much money, but one can dream right?

Willson Contreras will be that compliment at DH at some point.

I think it’s like a reverse jinx…post it enough times and perhaps it will come true. Lol. Of course, Dewitt is the furthest thing from a random variable so it’s about 99.99999% sure to be wrong when if you posted it for every top free agent for the rest of Dewitt Jr’s life.

Notwithstanding, if you’re gonna go on a wild spending spree in dream land, I’d rather see it spent on pitching instead of another OF/DH.
