Wow, and Mo was upset about being booed on opening day. These guys knew they had work to do this last off season and did not make a “game changing” transaction. Some band-aid type moves, but nothing that made you think “ this will make us a good 10 games better.”
Overhyping prospects is a contributor to the problems, IMO.

Man, if you had asked me in 2020 where Dylan Carlson would be as a player by 2024, I would’ve said: multitime All-Star. Which leads us to Jordan Walker.
For the record, in 2020, you can read what I wrote about Carlson when he was our no. 1 prospect. The comp I used was Nick Markakis, who had a long career with one All-Star Game and a career OPS+ of 109. To date, Carlson’s is 99.

This roster has been underperforming. No doubt about that. But, other than the obvious missing link in CF, this is an impressive lineup, IMO. We have two likely HOF players at the infield corners, and a borderline HOF player behind the plate. Time will tell what the very young Winn, Gorman, and Walker will become. I think the biggest problem for development is an inability to effectively scout, assess, and sign good pitching. This organization has failed in that regard, and I don’t know who to blame other than Mozeliak, ultimately. This might have finally changed for the better with the hiring of Chaim Bloom. I say that because of the development success that the Rays and the Red Sox have had. Also, so far both Nick Robertson and Ryan Fernandez look like they could stick at the major league level. Victor Santos hasn’t shown anything yet, but it’s so early. All three of these pitchers came to the Cardinals by way of Boston, and I’m guessing that Bloom’s input was the driver behind it. And, Bloom might have been a booster for the Kittredge acquisition which seems to have worked out well for the Cardinals. I don’t know what this says about Girsch and Flores. Time will tell.
By no means is over hyping prospects a folly of the front office alone. They are egged on relentlessly. I cannot begin to count the times I have been run over by a hype bandwagon whilst attempting to inject a sober voice of reason into the discussion. Somebody has a good year in the Texas League and poof! they are a top prospect chiseled into the ML roster. But the FO is paid to get it right.

Ruh roh….This is the issue that Brian has alluded to. Poor performance leads to reduced fan interest which leads to reduced revenue which leads to budget cuts which can lead to further poor performance. It can be a death spiral if someone doesn’t figure something out.

GS, I heard on the radio that the FO is starting to lower ticket prices. They advertised it as the “radio listeners” appreciation, or something like that.

Ozuna is doing well and despite the personal issues where for awhile the Braves were supposedly trying to get out of his contract, he has been good for them.
Ozuna might be akin to Rocky Colavito as described in the book “The Curse Of Rocky Colavito.” In the book the author said trading Rocky was arguably the worst deal in Cleveland Indians history, and acquiring him back was the second worst (they gave up Tommie Agee and Tommy John to get The Rock back).
For us, two of the worst transactions in recent Cardinal history are trading for Marcel Ozuna, and then letting him walk after two years.
Yeah, Ozuna’s early season success may be more astounding than what O’Neill’s done with the Red Sox. Marcell was no joke for the Braves last year either as witnessed by 40 HR’s and 100 RBI’s in ’23.
Ozuna’s defense in the outfield was an embarrassment, IMO. I see that Atlanta lists him as their DH only.
The Gold Gloves for Marcell Ozuna and Tucker Barnhart seriously undermined my respect for the GG award in general.
I can see why fans would not have a lot of enthusiasm to pay $ to watch this ridiculous offense they are throwing out there.
That they did not do 1 thing this off season to address the offense says a lot about talent evaluations being done by the current front office.
Im fairly certain the entire industry predicted a strong offense from Stl this year. I don’t think it has been an evaluation problem, but rather a significant underperformance by many players. That is potentially a coaching issue. We theoretically have all the tools to have a great offense.
I think I the consensus was that the starting 8 or 9 was adequate, but there was no depth behind them on the ML or AAA rosters. So a few injuries and a few underperformers has left the offense in a shambles.
